You can’t make Windows add CPU capacity to a game with a setting. Windows already schedules the game’s threads across available logical processors. To help a game use the CPU effectively, reduce competing background work, check whether the game is actually CPU-limited, and leave processor scheduling at its default unless you have a specific reason to test affinity.
What “allocate more CPU” means in Windows
Windows schedules a game’s threads—not the game as one indivisible task—across logical processors. The scheduler considers factors such as thread priority, affinity, and whether a thread is ready to run. Windows also manages processor power and core parking to balance performance and energy use. There is no general-purpose CPU allocation slider that gives a game extra processing capacity.

CPU affinity is a limit on where a process may run. It does not reserve those processors for the game, guarantee more CPU time, or increase the CPU’s performance. Restricting a game can even make performance or frame-time consistency worse by giving Windows fewer scheduling options. Microsoft describes CPU Sets as a softer affinity mechanism that works with operating-system power management; a restrictive affinity mask takes precedence if it conflicts with CPU Set assignments. Microsoft’s CPU Sets documentation explains the distinction.
Start with checks that don’t restrict the scheduler
Check for competing background work
Close or pause unnecessary CPU-heavy work while gaming, such as a large file conversion or another demanding application. If performance improves when that work stops, the issue may be competition for available processor time rather than a setting that assigns too little CPU to the game.

Check Game Mode
Windows Game Mode can prioritize a focused game or give it exclusive access to some resources. Microsoft says it works by default for most Windows games, and its effect depends on what else is running. It is not a switch that adds CPU cores. The Microsoft Game Mode documentation describes the resource behavior; its API information is marked as deprecated for Windows 10 version 1809 and later, so it should not be taken as a guarantee about every current Windows interface.
Check power conditions
On a laptop, connect the charger and check Windows’ power mode. Power settings and thermal conditions can affect how the processor operates; changing power behavior can also affect heat, fan noise, and battery life. Microsoft’s processor power-management documentation describes the Windows power-management architecture.

Find out whether the game is CPU-limited
A game can be limited by the CPU, the GPU, or another part of the system. If the GPU is the limiting factor, changing CPU affinity is unlikely to solve the performance problem. Compare performance in the same game scene and conditions, and look for whether the processor or graphics workload is the constraint before changing scheduling behavior.
How to test CPU affinity in Task Manager
Use affinity as a reversible troubleshooting experiment, not a routine optimization. The exact control can vary by Windows build, permissions, game launcher, and anti-cheat protections. If it is available for your game, the general path is:

- Processor provides dependable and fast execution of tasks with maximum efficiency.Graphics Frequency : 2200 MHZ.Number of CPU Cores : 8. Maximum Operating Temperature (Tjmax) : 89°C.
- Ryzen 7 product line processor for better usability and increased efficiency
- 5 nm process technology for reliable performance with maximum productivity
- Octa-core (8 Core) processor core allows multitasking with great reliability and fast processing speed
- 8 MB L2 plus 96 MB L3 cache memory provides excellent hit rate in short access time enabling improved system performance
- Launch the game, then open Task Manager and select the Details tab.
- Find the game process, right-click it, and choose Set affinity, if that option is available.
- Note the original selection before changing anything. Selecting fewer processors restricts where the process can run; it does not make those processors exclusive to the game.
- Change only one setting, then compare the same scene under similar conditions. Pay attention to frame-time consistency as well as average performance.
- Restore the original selection if performance or consistency gets worse. Do not assume the change will persist after the game restarts.
There is no universally faster affinity mask. Pinning a game to fewer processors can prevent Windows from moving threads when other work competes for the same cores. Avoid raising a game’s priority to High or Realtime as a generic fix: a higher priority changes scheduling treatment, but it does not add CPU capacity or establish that performance will improve.
Why hybrid CPUs need game-specific handling
Some processors combine higher-performance cores with more energy-efficient cores. Windows may use efficient cores to save energy and bring higher-performance cores into use when needed. Which cores help a particular game depends on its thread workload, processor topology, and competing activity—not simply on a blanket “P-cores only” or “E-cores only” rule.

Microsoft’s game-development guidance cautions that hard affinity can cause contention on pinned cores, while some critical threads may benefit from performance-oriented cores in particular configurations. Broadly restricting a game can remove useful scheduling choices. See Microsoft’s guidance on game performance in hybrid CPU environments.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDon’t confuse graphics options with CPU allocation
In Windows 11, Settings > System > Display > Graphics includes per-app graphics options. Where a system has multiple GPUs, these can select a GPU, and windowed-game optimizations affect graphics presentation. They are not CPU affinity or CPU allocation controls. Restart the game after changing a graphics setting, as Microsoft Support’s windowed-games instructions advise.

When a setting is not enough
If ordinary checks do not resolve a CPU limit, performance may be constrained by the game’s engine, the processor’s capabilities, or power and thermal conditions. Windows can schedule work differently, but no setting can make a CPU execute more work than its hardware and operating conditions allow. There is no evidence-based universal percentage improvement to expect from changing affinity.
