How to Make a Direwolf20 Server for Minecraft 1.18.2 (Forge)

A complete guide to hosting FTB Presents Direwolf20 1.18 for Minecraft 1.18.2, including Java 17, Forge installation, memory settings, client-only mods, Windows fixes and network setup.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To host FTB Presents Direwolf20 1.18 for Minecraft 1.18.2, install Java 17, install the Forge build required by the pack, copy the pack’s server files into the Forge server directory, remove client-only mods, set an appropriate memory limit, and start the generated Forge script. The pack listing identifies it as pack ID 95, running on Minecraft 1.18.2.

The exact Forge build must be checked against the pack manifest or the version list where you obtained the pack. Several 1.18.2 Forge builds are reported by third-party listings, but choosing the wrong one can prevent the server and clients from loading the same mod set.

What you need before installing

Requirement What the available documentation establishes Practical guidance
Modpack FTB Presents Direwolf20 1.18, pack ID 95, listed for Minecraft 1.18.2 on Forge Every player should install the same pack release, Minecraft version and Forge build.
Java Java 17 is required. Minecraft 1.18 through 1.20.4 uses Java 17. Install a 64-bit Java 17 JDK or JRE and verify the executable used by the server, not just the one installed system-wide.
Memory At least 4 GB RAM; 6 GB is recommended by the pack listing. Reserve memory for the operating system and other services. An 8 GB heap is an example used by a general server guide, not a requirement for this pack.
Storage No pack-specific disk figure is stated. Leave room for the world, backups, logs and future modpack updates rather than allocating only the initial download size.
Network A reachable host is required for remote players. For a home server, configure the firewall and router for the port shown in server.properties; the conventional Minecraft default is 25565.

Use a separate server directory, such as C:MinecraftDirewolf20-1.18 on Windows or ~/minecraft/direwolf20-1.18 on Linux. Keeping this installation separate from your client prevents launcher updates from overwriting server files.

Confirm the pack and Forge versions

Use the 1.18.2 pack, not a similarly named release

The relevant pack is FTB Presents Direwolf20 1.18. A launcher may display a shorter “Direwolf20 1.18” label, but the server must use the release whose Minecraft version is 1.18.2. Do not mix files from a 1.20 or 1.21 Direwolf20 release with this installation.

Why the Forge build needs checking

A dated third-party listing reports Forge 1.18.2 build 40.1.0 as Recommended and 40.1.84 as Latest. An unofficial changelog copy labels 40.2.0 “Recommended Build 2,” but that claim is lower confidence. None of those snippets confirms the exact build expected by every release of pack ID 95.

Before running the installer, open the pack’s manifest or the FTB/CurseForge version list and record the Forge version named there. Treat that value as authoritative. If the client and server use different Forge builds, the server may stop during startup or clients may receive a mod-list or protocol mismatch.

Install and verify Java 17

  1. Install a 64-bit Java 17 JDK or JRE on the computer that will run the server.
  2. Open a new terminal so the updated path is loaded.
  3. Run java -version. The major version should report 17. If it reports 8, 11 or another release, the server will not meet the pack requirement.
  4. If several Java installations exist, locate the Java 17 executable and use its full path in the start script. This avoids relying on whichever Java happens to be first in the system PATH.

Java 17 is a runtime requirement for this Minecraft generation, not an optional performance tweak. Installing Java 8 and changing only the memory flags does not make a 1.18.2 Forge server compatible.

Prepare the Forge server directory

Get the server-side pack files

Use the server package supplied for the exact Direwolf20 1.18.2 release when one is available. If you are assembling the server from a client installation, keep the pack’s mod, configuration and data folders together. Common folders include mods, config, defaultconfigs, kubejs and scripts; that list is an example of the folders that modpacks use, not a guarantee that every release contains all of them.

Do not copy a random “latest” folder from another Direwolf20 version. Compare the client and server pack release numbers before moving files.

Install Forge in server mode

  1. Place the Forge installer JAR in the empty server directory.
  2. Open a terminal in that directory.
  3. Run the installer in server mode, replacing the placeholder with the verified build: java -jar forge-<version>-installer.jar --installServer.
  4. Wait for the installer to create the Forge libraries, a server launch script and a JVM-arguments file. Forge versions from Minecraft 1.17 onward generate a launch script rather than requiring you to construct the entire classpath manually.

On Windows, a typical command from PowerShell is:

cd C:MinecraftDirewolf20-1.18
java -jar forge-40.1.0-installer.jar --installServer

On Linux, the equivalent is:

cd ~/minecraft/direwolf20-1.18
java -jar forge-40.1.0-installer.jar --installServer

Use the version you verified, not the illustrative 40.1.0 value shown in the examples.

Copy the modpack and complete first launch

  1. Copy the verified pack’s mods, config and any required data folders into the Forge server directory. Merge folders carefully; do not leave an older configuration tree beside the new one.
  2. Inspect the server directory for client-only files. Remove minimaps, shader loaders, HUD or menu overlays, zoom utilities, and purely client-side sound or visual-effect mods. These are useful in a client installation but can crash a dedicated server.
  3. Run the generated script (usually a Windows batch file or a Unix shell script) once. If Forge creates eula.txt, read the Minecraft EULA and change eula=false to eula=true only if you accept it.
  4. Run the script again and watch the console until it reports that the server is ready for commands. The first start can take longer while libraries, registries and the world are created.
  5. Stop the server from its console with stop. Do not close the terminal window or kill the process during world saves.

Keep the console output from the first successful launch. It provides the Forge, Java and mod-loading details needed to diagnose a later update or mismatch.

Set the memory limit safely

Set heap values in the JVM-arguments file generated by Forge, or in the launch script if that release embeds the arguments there. A general 1.18 server guide demonstrates -Xms8G -Xmx8G. That is an example, not the Direwolf20 1.18.2 requirement.

Available physical RAM Starting approach Why
4 GB total Do not dedicate all memory to Java; test with the smallest heap that allows the pack to start. The pack listing calls 4 GB the minimum, while the operating system still needs memory.
8 GB total Around 4–6 GB heap is a sensible test range; monitor whether the system begins swapping. Six GB is the listed recommendation, but leaving no memory for the OS can make the machine unresponsive.
12 GB or more Start at 6 GB and increase only when logs or in-game symptoms show sustained pressure. More heap is not automatically faster; excessive heaps can lengthen garbage-collection pauses.

Use the same units on both flags, for example -Xms6G -Xmx6G. Change one variable at a time and restart the server after editing the file. If startup fails immediately after a memory change, restore the previous values and check that the machine actually has enough free RAM.

Windows startup-script failure and its fix

A reported Direwolf20 1.18 server problem involved a bundled script referencing jre/jdk-17.0.2+8-jre, a directory that was not present after setup. The same discussion included a machine that had only Java 8 installed. Another follow-up reports fixing start.bat so it pointed at the real minecraft_server.1.18.2.jar.

If the window flashes and closes or the console says a file cannot be found:

  1. Open the batch file in a text editor instead of double-clicking it.
  2. Check every Java path and every JAR filename in the script. Paths must match files that actually exist in the server directory.
  3. Point the script at the installed Java 17 executable, using a quoted full path when the path contains spaces.
  4. Confirm that minecraft_server.1.18.2.jar and the Forge-generated files are in the directory from which the script is running.
  5. Run the batch file from an already-open Command Prompt so the error remains visible.

Do not “solve” a missing Java 17 path by pointing the script to Java 8. That may make the command run, but it does not satisfy the pack’s runtime requirement.

Make the server reachable by players

Local testing

First test on the host computer itself. Start the server, wait for its ready message, and connect with the client using localhost. This separates mod-loading problems from router and firewall problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Players on the same network

Use the host computer’s private IPv4 address, such as the address shown by ipconfig on Windows or ip addr on Linux. Allow Java or the server process through the operating system firewall. The client must still run the same Direwolf20 release, Minecraft 1.18.2 and Forge build.

Players outside the home network

Forward the port configured in server.properties from the router to the server computer’s private address, and permit that port through the host firewall. Give friends your public address and configured port, never the private address used inside your home. If your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, ordinary port forwarding may not work; use a hosted server or another network arrangement instead.

Only expose the port you need. Keep the server software and Java installation updated within the versions supported by the pack, and stop the server before replacing files.

Common errors and what they indicate

Symptom Likely cause Action
UnsupportedClassVersionError or Java-version message The script is using Java 8 or another non-17 runtime. Run java -version from the same script context and change the script to the Java 17 executable.
“Unable to access jarfile” The installer JAR or server JAR name in the command is wrong, or the working directory is wrong. List the directory contents, correct the filename and run the command from the server folder.
Client reports a mod-list mismatch Client and server have different pack releases, Forge builds or mod files. Compare the manifest and restore the exact matching server files; do not remove a random mod to bypass the message.
Server crashes while loading a mod A client-only mod was copied to the server, a dependency is missing, or a configuration belongs to another release. Read the first mod named in the crash report, remove only confirmed client-only content, and recopy the matching pack folders.
“Can’t keep up!” warnings or severe lag The host is short on CPU, memory or disk I/O, or the world is generating new terrain. Check free system RAM, avoid assigning the entire machine to Java, let initial generation finish, and review the server log before increasing the heap.
Local connection works but remote players cannot join Firewall, port forwarding, changing private address or carrier-grade NAT. Verify the configured port, reserve the host’s local address, test the firewall and confirm that the public address is reachable.

Backups, updates and safe maintenance

Back up before changing anything

Stop the server cleanly, then copy the world directory and the pack’s configuration and data folders to storage outside the live server directory. Keep dated backup generations so a corrupt world or bad configuration can be rolled back.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Update as a controlled change

  1. Record the current pack release, Forge build, Java version and memory flags.
  2. Make a complete backup while the server is stopped.
  3. Install the new pack or Forge files in a separate directory rather than overwriting the working installation.
  4. Compare the new manifest with the old one and copy only the world or data you intentionally want to retain.
  5. Start the new directory and inspect the log before allowing players to join.

Never assume that a newer Forge build is compatible simply because it is labeled “Latest.” For this 1.18.2 pack, the documented build choice remains something you should verify against the pack’s manifest.

Using a managed host instead of a home computer

Several game-server hosts advertise Direwolf20 1.18 installation or one-click pack options, including Pine Hosting, StickyPiston and BeastNode. A managed host can remove router configuration and Java-path maintenance, but you still need to select the exact Minecraft 1.18.2 pack release and confirm what memory allocation is included.

StickyPiston describes a library containing a latest-tested Direwolf20 1.18 version; that is a provider claim, so check the panel’s displayed pack and Forge versions before creating the world. Hosting does not eliminate client/server matching: every player still needs the same modpack release.

Final pre-launch checklist

  • The installation is FTB Presents Direwolf20 1.18, pack ID 95, for Minecraft 1.18.2.
  • The server uses a verified Forge 1.18.2 build from the pack manifest or version list.
  • java -version reports Java 17 for the executable used by the launch script.
  • The pack’s required mods, config and data folders are present, and client-only mods are removed.
  • Heap settings leave RAM for the operating system; 4 GB is the listed minimum and 6 GB the listed recommendation.
  • The generated Forge script starts without a stale Java path or missing JAR reference.
  • The EULA has been accepted before normal startup.
  • A local connection succeeds before you troubleshoot internet access.
  • Backups exist before anyone begins building in the new world.
