To make a custom ringtone for your iPhone, edit an audio file, eligible downloaded Apple Music song, or your own recording in GarageBand, then export it as a ringtone. To record a greeting callers hear when they reach voicemail, use the Phone app’s voicemail greeting controls instead. These are separate features, with different steps and availability.
Choose the ringtone workflow if you want a sound to play on your own iPhone for calls or alerts. Choose the voicemail workflow if you want callers to hear a message when they reach your voicemail. GarageBand creates the first kind of sound; it does not record your voicemail greeting.

Choose the sound you want to make
| What you want | What it does | Where to make it | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Custom ringtone | Plays on your iPhone for incoming calls when that ringtone is selected. | GarageBand on iPhone | Exported ringtones can be up to 30 seconds long. |
| Custom text tone | Plays on your iPhone for text alerts when selected. | Export the sound from GarageBand as a ringtone, then choose Standard Text Tone or assign it to a contact. | The same 30-second ringtone limit applies to the exported sound. |
| Custom voicemail greeting | Plays to callers who reach your voicemail. | Phone app voicemail controls | Recording a custom greeting is not supported by every carrier or in every country or region. |
Apple’s GarageBand instructions cover ringtone creation from an audio file, an eligible song in your Apple Music library, or music you make yourself. The Phone app’s voicemail controls record what callers hear; they do not create a ringtone for your own phone.

The difference is the destination of the sound. A ringtone or text tone is an alert selected for your device, and you can choose a standard sound or associate a sound with a contact. A voicemail greeting is part of the voicemail experience for callers. It is recorded through Phone only where the carrier and location support the relevant voicemail controls. If you meant “greeting” as a sound that plays on your own phone, follow the GarageBand steps below; if you mean the message heard by callers, skip to voicemail.

Make and export a ringtone in GarageBand
Apple Support’s “Create a custom ringtone on your iPhone,” published March 13, 2025, describes GarageBand as the route for making a ringtone on iPhone. Its documented sources include audio files, eligible Apple Music songs downloaded to iPhone, and original material created in GarageBand. You do not need a separate physical accessory for these steps.
1. Start an audio project
- Open GarageBand on your iPhone. If it is not installed, download it from the App Store.
- From the GarageBand Home Screen, touch and hold the GarageBand icon to open its quick-action menu, then choose Create New Audio Recording. If you are already in GarageBand, return to its Home Screen first.
- Open the Tracks view, select a track, and open the Loops Browser. The track gives you a place to add and edit the sound before you export it.
The project is an editing workspace: you add the sound there, choose the portion you want, and then share the finished project as a ringtone. The resulting ringtone is separate from the source audio in the project; the export step is what makes it available to select as a sound on the iPhone.
2. Choose the audio source
In the Loops Browser, choose Files to browse audio files stored on your iPhone or in iCloud Drive. Choose Music to browse songs in your Apple Music library. For the documented Apple Music workflow, the song must be downloaded to the iPhone; a cloud-only library entry is not ready to use in the project.
If a song appears dimmed in the Music browser, it may not be downloaded or may be protected. Download it if that is the issue and check again. Apple says protected Apple Music files cannot be used to make a ringtone, so downloading does not make a protected track eligible. These are two different checks: a song may be unavailable because it is not on the device, or it may be unavailable because it is protected. A downloaded protected song remains unusable as a ringtone.
You can also make original material in GarageBand by recording built-in Touch Instruments, adding Apple Loops, or recording yourself playing or singing. This is useful when you want a short sound you created rather than a section of an existing track. These creation options avoid relying on a particular Apple Music selection, though the finished export still needs to satisfy the ringtone length limit.
Pick the source based on what you want to hear: an audio file for a sound you already have access to, a downloaded and eligible Apple Music song for a musical excerpt, or a new GarageBand recording for material you make yourself. Apple’s documented steps do not provide a way to turn a protected Apple Music track into an eligible ringtone.
3. Add the sound and select a section
- Drag the chosen file or song from the browser into the Tracks view.
- To use only part of it, select the audio region and drag its left or right edge to set the section. Zoom in if you need more precise control over the edit.
- Move the selected region all the way to the left of the project timeline. This removes blank space before the sound, so the exported ringtone begins with the audio rather than silence.
- Keep the finished sound at or below 30 seconds. Apple’s GarageBand ringtone guidance sets 30 seconds as the maximum; you can shorten the region in the Tracks view before export.
Consider both ends of the selection. The left edge determines where the sound begins, while the right edge determines where it stops. If you want a particular excerpt rather than the start of a longer recording, adjust the region to keep that passage and leave out the rest. Zooming in gives you more precise control when setting those edges.

Position matters as well as duration. A region that starts later on the timeline leaves a blank lead-in in the project, which becomes silence before the sound plays. Move the region to the far left so the ringtone begins with the audio itself. This is a separate edit from trimming: shortening the region controls its length, while moving it left removes the gap before it.
The documented limit is 30 seconds, not a suggested target. A shorter excerpt is fine if that is all you need; the important point is that the exported ringtone must not exceed the cap. If the complete sound is longer, choose the section you want before exporting or use GarageBand’s offer to shorten an overlength project.
4. Export the project as a ringtone
- Return to My Songs to see your project.
- Select the project, choose Share, then choose Ringtone.
- Enter a name for the ringtone and tap Export.
- If GarageBand says the project is longer than 30 seconds, either let GarageBand shorten the sound automatically or cancel, return to the project, trim the audio region, and export again.
When export finishes, tap Use sound as to choose how to use it. Select Standard Ringtone for incoming calls, Standard Text Tone for text alerts, or assign the sound to a contact. Tap Done if you want to leave the export without assigning it at that point.
There are two valid ways to handle an overlong project. Allowing GarageBand to shorten it is the quicker option, but trimming the region yourself gives you control over which section is retained. If the automatically shortened result is not the excerpt you intended, go back, adjust the selection, and export again. Choosing Done does not cancel the export; it simply leaves the sound unassigned at that moment. You can select an available sound later in Settings or Contacts.

Apple also describes recording Touch Instruments, adding Apple Loops, or recording yourself playing or singing as ways to create ringtone material. Those are alternatives to importing an existing file or choosing a song; all use the same export route once you have prepared the sound.
Record a greeting callers hear in voicemail
Use the Phone app for a voicemail greeting. The exact route depends on whether Phone is using Unified or Classic layout. Apple’s iPhone User Guide provides both routes; its displayed instructions may change as Phone layouts and iOS versions change.
Unified layout
- Open Phone and tap Calls.
- Tap Edit, then tap Edit Voicemail Greeting.
- Tap Custom, then tap Record and record the greeting.
Classic layout
- Open Phone and tap Voicemail.
- Tap Greeting.
- Tap Custom, then tap Record and record the greeting.
Apple’s voicemail setup instructions also describe choosing Default or Custom and recording a new greeting when Custom is available. Voicemail, Visual Voicemail, and Live Voicemail are offered by select carriers in select countries or regions; those features are not available universally.

The voicemail workflow is not the same as exporting a ringtone. You do not make this greeting in GarageBand and then assign it to callers: when the supported controls are available, you record the custom greeting from the Phone app. Conversely, recording a voicemail greeting does not change the ringtone your iPhone plays for an incoming call.
If you only see a default greeting or cannot find Custom, the Apple instructions do not identify a single cause for every line. Support depends on the carrier and country or region. Check which voicemail features your carrier supports for your particular line and location rather than assuming that a GarageBand setting or ringtone export will enable the option.
Set a different ringtone or alert tone
Change the default sound
To select an available built-in or purchased sound, open Settings > Sounds & Haptics, tap the relevant sound category, then select a ringtone or alert tone. To browse purchasable sounds, Apple documents the path Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtones > Tone Store. Tone Store availability and features vary by country or region.
This Settings route is for choosing among sounds available on the iPhone; it is not the GarageBand editing process. If you have already exported a custom ringtone, use the export assignment option or select the sound through the appropriate sound controls. Tone Store is an optional purchase route for sounds, not a required step in making one with GarageBand.
Give a contact a distinct sound
- Open Contacts and select the person.
- Tap Edit.
- Tap Ringtone to choose their call sound, or Text Tone to choose their text-alert sound.
- Select the sound and save the contact changes.
During GarageBand export, the Use sound as option can assign the new sound to a contact immediately. The Contacts route is useful if you exported it without assigning it or want to change that contact’s sound later. A contact-specific choice is different from selecting a standard ringtone or text tone, which sets the general sound category.
Compare the two workflows
Use purpose and destination to choose the right method. A ringtone plays on your iPhone for incoming calls, and a text tone plays on your iPhone for text alerts. A voicemail greeting is heard by callers who reach voicemail. The first two are alert sounds you select for your device; the greeting is recorded for the voicemail feature.
The creation routes differ too. GarageBand imports or creates audio, lets you select a section, and exports that project as a ringtone. Phone’s voicemail controls record the custom greeting when supported. GarageBand has a documented 30-second maximum for the exported ringtone and restrictions on using protected Apple Music tracks; voicemail greeting availability instead depends on carrier and country or region.

That distinction also helps narrow down troubleshooting. If an audio file or song is unavailable in GarageBand, check whether it is on the device and whether it is protected. If a ringtone is too long or begins with silence, adjust the project. If the Phone app does not offer a custom greeting, check support for voicemail on your line and in your location.

The song is dimmed or cannot be selected
Check whether the song is downloaded to the iPhone. If it is not, download it and try selecting it again. A protected Apple Music track cannot be used for a ringtone, even if it is available in your library. A dimmed listing may indicate either of those issues, so downloading is only the remedy when the track is not yet on the device.

The ringtone is too long to export
GarageBand ringtones are limited to 30 seconds. At the export prompt, allow GarageBand to shorten the sound, or cancel and trim the region in Tracks view before exporting again. Trimming first lets you choose which portion is kept. Either route addresses length; if you care about retaining a specific excerpt, trim it yourself rather than relying on automatic shortening.
The exported sound starts late
Return to Tracks view and move the audio region all the way to the left of the timeline. A gap at the beginning of the project becomes silence before the sound plays. This is fixed by moving the region, not by making it longer or changing its source.
There is no Custom option for the voicemail greeting
Custom greeting recording depends on carrier and country or region support. Apple’s instructions explicitly qualify the feature as unsupported by some carriers and in some locations. If Custom is missing from the voicemail greeting controls, the available information does not identify the cause for a particular phone line; check with your carrier about voicemail features supported for your line and location.
The Phone app labels do not match the steps
Use the path for the layout you see: Unified layout has Calls > Edit > Edit Voicemail Greeting, while Classic layout has Voicemail > Greeting. Apple’s displayed instructions can change with Phone app layouts and iOS releases, so the label may vary from older walkthroughs. These are alternate paths, not steps that must both be completed.

Apple guidance and availability
Apple Support’s “Create a custom ringtone on your iPhone,” published March 13, 2025, documents the GarageBand workflow and the 30-second ringtone maximum. Apple’s iPhone User Guide voicemail pages, accessed October 13, 2026, describe the Phone app paths and qualify custom greeting recording by carrier and country or region. Apple’s instructions do not establish whether a particular carrier supports the feature for an individual line; that needs to be checked with the carrier.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are an iPhone ringtone and a voicemail greeting the same thing?
No. A ringtone is an alert sound played on your iPhone for incoming calls; a text tone is for your alerts. A voicemail greeting is heard by callers who reach voicemail. Make the first kind in GarageBand and record a supported custom greeting in Phone.
Can I make an iPhone ringtone from an Apple Music song?
Apple’s GarageBand workflow allows an eligible song in your Apple Music library if it is downloaded to the iPhone. Protected Apple Music tracks cannot be used as ringtones, and downloading a protected track does not make it eligible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow long can a custom iPhone ringtone be?
Apple’s GarageBand ringtone guidance sets a maximum of 30 seconds. Trim the project in Tracks view or let GarageBand shorten an overlong project during export.
Can I use the exported sound for texts or for one contact?
Yes. During export, choose Standard Text Tone or assign the sound to a contact. You can also choose an available sound in Settings or change a particular contact’s Ringtone or Text Tone in Contacts.
Why is the Custom voicemail greeting option missing?
Apple says custom greeting recording is not supported by every carrier or in every country or region. The missing option’s cause for a specific line cannot be determined from the menu alone; check with your carrier about voicemail support for your line and location.
Can I record my own ringtone instead of using a song?
Yes. Apple describes creating original ringtone material in GarageBand by recording built-in Touch Instruments, adding Apple Loops, or recording yourself playing or singing. Export the finished sound as a ringtone and keep it within the 30-second limit.

The Bottom Line
For a sound that plays on your iPhone, use GarageBand to edit an eligible source, keep the ringtone to 30 seconds or less, and export it as a ringtone. For a message callers hear at voicemail, record a custom greeting in Phone only if the option is supported by your carrier and country or region.
