How to Check Whether Mobile Games Support 185Hz Refresh Rates

A 185Hz phone does not guarantee 185 FPS in every game. Check the phone’s display mode, the game’s frame-rate settings, and an FPS indicator during play.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check both the phone’s display mode and the game’s frame-rate options. A phone may support a 185Hz display mode without a particular game rendering 185 frames per second (FPS). To verify a specific game, confirm the phone can use its highest refresh mode, inspect the game’s FPS settings, and check an FPS indicator while playing. A refresh-rate readout alone does not prove the game is producing that many frames.

Hz and FPS measure different things

Refresh rate, measured in hertz (Hz), describes how often the display can update. Frame rate, measured in frames per second (FPS), describes how many frames the game produces or presents each second. The two rates can differ: a 185Hz screen can display a game running at a lower frame rate. Android’s documentation explicitly treats an app’s frame rate and the display’s refresh rate as separate values. Android’s frame-rate guidance explains why they may not match.

There is a third number that can cause confusion: touch sampling rate, which describes how often the touch sensor samples input. It is not the display refresh rate or game FPS. For example, ASUS lists 720Hz touch sampling alongside the ROG Phone 9’s display specifications; that does not mean the display refreshes at 720Hz or that games run at 720 FPS. ASUS’s ROG Phone 9 feature page lists these specifications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These numbers answer different questions. A phone’s maximum Hz tells you what display mode it can offer. A game’s FPS setting tells you what frame-rate target or cap it exposes. An FPS indicator during play helps show what the game is actually presenting at that moment. A 185Hz mode can be useful even when the game runs below 185 FPS, but it should not be described as proof of 185 FPS gameplay.

Check whether the phone can enable 185Hz

  1. Identify the exact phone model. Check the model name in the phone’s device information or packaging, then consult the manufacturer’s specifications for that model. A range or maximum quoted for one model should not be assumed to apply to another version, region, or software build.
  2. Find the refresh-rate control. In Settings, search for “refresh rate” or a similar term. Some manufacturers use different labels. ASUS documents the path Settings > Display > Refresh rate on supported phones. ASUS support provides its instructions. Samsung calls its control “Motion smoothness”; options depend on the model, and a power-saving setting may select Standard mode. Samsung support describes its control.
  3. Choose or confirm the high-refresh mode. If the phone offers a high or adaptive mode, select it or check whether a per-game utility controls the mode. An advertised maximum is a capability, not proof that the phone is currently operating at that rate.
  4. Check for conditions that may restrict the mode. Power-saving settings can change the available or active behavior. The operating system may also adjust a requested rate based on factors such as battery state or device temperature. Record the mode and relevant conditions when you test; the result may differ when the phone is cool and charged versus hot or conserving power.

Menu names and available modes vary with the model, operating-system version, firmware, display resolution, and region. If the model’s specification page does not list a 185Hz mode, a game setting cannot make the display physically operate at 185Hz.

Read the specification carefully rather than relying on a product-family name or a retailer’s short description. The important question is not only whether a page mentions a high refresh rate, but what it says that figure applies to and how the mode is enabled. A manufacturer may describe a regular system maximum separately from a special gaming maximum. For example, the ROG Phone 9 has a stated 165Hz maximum in system settings and a stated 185Hz maximum through Game Genie. Those are two different operating paths on one model, not interchangeable numbers that can automatically be selected from the ordinary display menu.

If the phone has an adaptive mode, confirm whether that mode is selected and whether the game utility offers an additional control. Adaptive operation does not mean the display stays at its highest listed rate at all times. The phone’s reported mode can change according to system policy and conditions. For an apples-to-apples check, note the setting you selected, whether a utility was involved, and whether power saving was active. This helps avoid mistaking a temporary or restricted mode for the model’s maximum capability.

Check the specific game’s FPS options

  1. Open the game’s graphics or performance settings. Look for a frame-rate selector or an explicit option such as 90 FPS, 120 FPS, or a higher rate. The game may label this as frame rate, FPS, refresh rate, or a performance preset.
  2. Choose the highest option the game actually offers. If the menu has no 185 FPS option, the phone’s 185Hz display rating does not add one. The game may support a lower cap, or it may leave frame-rate selection to the operating system or a manufacturer tool.
  3. Check the phone maker’s game utility. Some phones provide per-game controls outside the game itself. On supported Galaxy devices, Samsung documents per-game FPS settings through Gaming Hub and Game Booster. The exact options depend on device and software. Samsung’s Gaming Hub and Game Booster guidance describes these controls.
  4. Return to the game and verify the result. Save the setting if the game requires it, then start a session. A menu option shows what the game or utility permits you to request; it does not, by itself, prove the game sustains that rate during play.

Make sure you are checking the game’s current settings on the phone you intend to use. A game may expose different choices depending on device and software, and a setting seen in a menu on another model does not establish that the same option is available on yours. If there is no FPS selector, do not infer a 185 FPS cap from an “ultra,” “high performance,” or similarly named graphics preset. Look for an explicit frame-rate value or check what an FPS indicator reports during play.

A manufacturer tool is worth checking when a game has no visible frame-rate menu, but treat it as a separate control rather than proof that the game supports a particular target. Its per-game options can depend on the phone and software. On supported Galaxy devices, Gaming Hub or Game Booster can expose per-game FPS settings; the existence of these controls does not mean every title offers every rate. Likewise, a high refresh option in a game utility concerns the phone’s display behavior unless the control specifically reports game FPS.

Measure FPS during play, not just the display mode

Use an FPS indicator if the game or phone provides one. Interpret its label carefully: a refresh-rate indicator reports the display mode, while an FPS indicator reports rendered or presented game frames. A screen showing 185Hz can still be displaying a game that is producing fewer than 185 FPS.

Test during ordinary gameplay rather than relying only on a menu or loading screen. If the FPS readout fluctuates, note the range and the conditions instead of treating a brief peak as sustained performance. Recheck after the phone has been playing for a while, because temperature and battery conditions can affect the rate. Also avoid changing several settings at once: if you alter the display mode, in-game preset, and power settings together, it becomes harder to tell which change affected the result.

The clearest practical evidence for a named game is the combination of its current FPS setting, any applicable per-game phone control, and an FPS readout during play. These checks answer separate questions: what rate the game allows, what mode the phone selects, and what the game is actually achieving under the tested conditions.

For a useful repeatable check, record the exact phone model, the game title, the game’s selected FPS option, the phone’s selected refresh mode, and whether a maker’s game utility was active. Then play normally and observe the FPS indicator rather than relying on a short menu visit. If you repeat the test after a change, alter one setting at a time—for example, first select the phone’s high-refresh mode, then check the game’s FPS option, then compare behavior with any per-game utility. This does not guarantee a laboratory-grade measurement, but it makes your result easier to interpret and reproduce.

Do not turn a single instantaneous reading into a general claim. If an indicator briefly reaches 185 but then settles below it, report that it peaked at that value under the test conditions, not that the game sustains 185 FPS. If it remains below the target, that establishes what happened in that session; it does not by itself explain whether the cause is a game cap, a system policy, or the phone’s ability to keep up. Use the settings and conditions to narrow down the explanation.

Why a 185Hz option may not produce 185 FPS

Support depends on more than the display. The game must request or allow a high rate, the phone must have a matching display mode available, and the device must be able to render the game at that rate. The operating system can apply a lower rate even when a game asks for a higher one.

Android Developers says Android 15 sets a 60Hz default for games to optimize power consumption. To unlock higher rates, a game must explicitly request them through Android’s Frame Rate API or Swappy. Supported display modes and current device conditions still matter; Android identifies battery state and device temperature as possible reasons the system may override a request. A game also needs enough performance headroom to sustain its target. Android’s game refresh-rate guidance explains these policy and implementation considerations.

This explains why checking only the phone or only the game is incomplete. The handset’s display might offer 185Hz, but a game might expose only a lower FPS option. Conversely, a game may request a high frame rate, but the phone’s available display modes, system policy, battery state, temperature, or performance may prevent that target from being reached. A game’s request is not a guarantee that the device will honor it in every situation.

Power and heat are practical parts of the check, not evidence of a broken screen or game. Android says the system may override a high-rate request because of battery state or device temperature, and it also notes the need for a game to perform well enough to sustain its requested rate. If behavior changes after extended play, compare the phone’s state and settings rather than assuming the game’s support has changed. Repeat under normal play conditions and record what the FPS indicator shows.

Consequently, “supports 185Hz” can mean different things in casual product descriptions. For a useful check, ask whether the phone offers a 185Hz display mode, whether the particular game offers or requests a high FPS setting, and whether an in-game FPS indicator shows that rate during play. Those are related but not interchangeable claims.

Example: what ASUS’s ROG Phone 9 specification means

ASUS specifies the ROG Phone 9 with a 1–120Hz LTPO range, a maximum of 165Hz in system settings, and a maximum of 185Hz in Game Genie. ASUS states on the product page: “The 185 Hz refresh rate can only be enabled in Game Genie while playing mobile games.” See the ROG Phone 9 technical specifications and ROG Phone 9 product page.

This is evidence that the phone has a special 185Hz display mode available through its gaming utility while playing mobile games. It is not evidence that every game on the phone renders at 185 FPS, or that any particular game offers a 185 FPS setting. You still need to check that game’s options and its observed FPS.

The same specification lists 720Hz touch sampling, but that figure is a separate input measurement. Keep it out of any comparison of game FPS or screen refresh modes. If you compare another phone with the ROG Phone 9, compare like with like: the maximum display mode and how to enable it, the specific game’s available FPS choices, any per-game utility controls, and the rate each phone and game sustain during actual play.

How to interpret common results

What you find What it establishes What to check next
The manufacturer lists a 185Hz maximum The model has a display capability at that maximum under the stated conditions. Find where the mode is enabled and whether it applies in the game you are checking.
The phone’s refresh-rate indicator shows 185Hz The display is using or reporting a 185Hz mode. Check the game’s FPS setting or an FPS indicator; the display reading is not a game-frame count.
The game offers a 185 FPS option The game exposes that target or cap in its current settings. Play with an FPS indicator to see whether the game reaches and sustains it.
The game offers only a lower FPS option The game’s visible settings do not offer 185 FPS in that configuration. Check for a supported per-game phone utility setting, but do not assume it can override the game’s limits.
The FPS indicator stays below 185 The game is not achieving 185 FPS under the conditions of that test. Check the selected game preset, phone mode, battery and temperature conditions, and repeat the test during normal play.

When comparing two phones, avoid comparing a manufacturer’s maximum display specification on one device with an FPS result from a game on another. Use the same game where possible, identify the exact model and software context, and distinguish the phone’s mode from the game’s observed frame rate. Also check whether one result depends on a special utility such as Game Genie while the other is a regular system setting. Those differences can explain why two headline figures do not describe the same capability.

Troubleshoot a missing or low frame-rate option

  • The phone has no 185Hz setting: verify the exact model and its manufacturer specifications. A different model in the same product family may have different modes.
  • The game has no high-FPS choice: check its graphics settings and any documented per-game phone utility. If neither offers the rate, the display’s maximum alone cannot establish game support.
  • The phone is in a lower mode: review its refresh-rate control and power-saving settings. On supported ASUS phones, use Settings > Display > Refresh rate; other devices may use different labels and paths.
  • The mode or FPS drops during a session: repeat the check under normal conditions and note battery state and temperature. Android documents these as factors that can lead the system to override a high-rate request.
  • Two indicators disagree: confirm whether each reads display Hz or game FPS. They report different measurements, so different values are not necessarily a fault.

If you cannot find the control, use the phone’s Settings search and the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model rather than assuming that a menu path from another device applies. On Samsung, for example, the control is called Motion smoothness and its options vary by model; power-saving settings may select Standard. On supported ASUS devices, ASUS documents Settings > Display > Refresh rate. Utility names and features can also vary by device and software, so verify that a game setting you see is available on your own phone.

If the phone reports 185Hz but the game indicator stays below 185 FPS, first verify which indicator is which. If the readouts are labeled correctly, the difference may simply mean the game is producing fewer frames than the display can update. Check whether the game offers a higher FPS choice, whether a maker’s tool has a per-game setting, and whether power or temperature conditions could be influencing the session. Do not assume that forcing a display mode can remove a game’s own frame cap or ensure the phone can sustain a higher rate.

No special accessory, paid service, or subscription is needed for this basic verification. Use the phone’s existing settings, the game’s menus, any built-in manufacturer utility, and an available FPS indicator. If the phone does not provide an FPS indicator, you can still confirm its display mode and inspect the game’s listed options, but do not claim a measured in-game rate without an FPS reading.

What a reliable support claim should specify

When comparing phones or games, keep the evidence attached to the claim. For a phone, state the exact model, its maximum display mode, and the steps or utility required to enable it. For a game, name the title and the FPS option it exposes on the tested device and software. For actual performance, distinguish a selected target from the FPS observed during play, and describe the conditions if you report a measured result.

There is no complete, authoritative list established here of mobile games that render at 185 FPS across devices. Game support varies by title, device, and software. The reliable answer for an individual game comes from its current settings and an FPS check on the phone in question—not from the phone’s headline refresh-rate specification alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a 185Hz phone mean every mobile game runs at 185 FPS?

No. 185Hz describes a display mode, while FPS describes how many frames a game produces or presents. A game may offer a lower frame-rate cap, and system policy or device conditions may also result in a lower rate.

How can I tell whether a game is actually running at 185 FPS?

Check the game’s FPS settings and any applicable per-game phone utility, then use an FPS indicator during ordinary gameplay. Make sure the indicator reports FPS rather than the display’s refresh rate, and check whether the rate is sustained rather than a brief peak.

Is a 185Hz refresh-rate indicator proof of 185 FPS?

No. It reports the display mode, not the game’s frame count. The game can produce fewer frames than the display is capable of refreshing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the ROG Phone 9 list both 165Hz and 185Hz?

ASUS specifies a maximum of 165Hz in system settings and a maximum of 185Hz in Game Genie. ASUS says its 185Hz refresh rate can only be enabled in Game Genie while playing mobile games. Neither figure alone establishes that a particular game renders at 185 FPS.

Why might a game’s frame rate fall below its selected option?

The selected option is a target or cap, not a guarantee of sustained performance. Android says battery state and device temperature can lead the system to override a high-rate request; the game and device also need enough performance to sustain the rate.

Does touch sampling rate tell me how many FPS a game runs?

No. Touch sampling rate describes how often the touch sensor samples input. ASUS lists 720Hz touch sampling on the ROG Phone 9, but that is neither its display refresh rate nor a game’s FPS.

Do I need to buy an app or accessory to check 185Hz game support?

No special purchase is needed for the basic check. Use the phone’s settings, the game’s frame-rate menu, any built-in manufacturer game utility, and an FPS indicator if available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

To check whether a mobile game supports 185Hz, verify that the exact phone model can enable a 185Hz display mode, inspect the game’s own FPS choices and any per-game phone controls, then check an FPS indicator during play. Keep display Hz, game FPS, and touch sampling rate separate: a 185Hz screen is not proof that a game renders 185 FPS.
