Before you use or distribute software built with AI-generated code, review it as software you are responsible for—not as a finished product endorsed by the tool. Read the changes, test the creative workflow, check security and privacy, verify accessibility, and review dependencies and rights. If you plan to release it commercially, also decide what records and disclosures your situation requires. Those last questions depend on where you operate, what the software does, how it is distributed, and the terms of the AI service.
First, be clear about what you are evaluating
“AI-generated software” can mean an application assembled largely by an AI coding assistant, code generated for an existing creative tool, or an AI feature added to software you already use. The practical checks are similar, but the risks vary. A script that renames a folder of images can damage originals; a plug-in that uploads project files raises privacy questions; a web app that stores customer work also needs a careful review of its server, access controls, and data handling.

Start by writing down what the software will do, who will use it, what files or information it can reach, and what happens when something goes wrong. Identify irreversible actions—such as overwriting source media, deleting files, publishing a design, or charging a customer—and require an explicit human decision and a recoverable process for them.

Microsoft’s Windows developer guidance puts the accountability plainly: “The code your AI agent generates is code you ship, and you are accountable for everything in your app regardless of how it was written.” That is a useful engineering principle for creative software, even though the document is specifically Windows-focused rather than a universal standard.

Read and test the changes before relying on them
Inspect what the tool actually changed
Ask the coding assistant to explain its changes, but use that explanation as a map, not proof. Review the actual diff: the added and modified lines, files, configuration, and dependency changes. Make sure you can explain what consequential parts do and why they are needed. If you cannot understand a piece of code that handles user files, network access, authentication, payments, or permissions, do not ship it until someone qualified has reviewed it.
Microsoft Learn’s Windows guidance, last updated 5 July 2026, says to “Read and understand every change before accepting it” and to test AI-generated code at least as thoroughly as hand-written code. It warns that plausible-looking code can still be subtly wrong. A confident explanation, a clean-looking interface, or one successful demonstration does not establish that the software behaves correctly in less convenient cases.
Test the workflow, not just the demo
Build tests around the work people will actually do. For a creative app, that may include importing, editing, saving, exporting, reopening, and undoing a change. Try representative files and edge cases: an empty project, a very large file, an unusual filename, a missing asset, an unsupported format, a network interruption, or a user who cancels midway through an operation. Confirm that errors are understandable and that a failure does not silently corrupt work.
Test interactions with user files and cloud services separately. Confirm which files are read, changed, copied, uploaded, or deleted. Verify that saving to a new location does not unexpectedly overwrite an original. If the application performs a long or consequential task, check that users can see its progress, stop it where appropriate, and recover from a partial failure. Keep a known-good copy of important originals while validating a new tool or workflow.

No reliable defect rate for AI-generated creative software is established by the sources cited here. Treat testing as necessary because generated output can be wrong—not because a particular failure percentage has been measured.
Review security and dependencies
Generated code needs the same security review as other code. The following checklist reflects Microsoft’s Windows development recommendations; adapt it to the software’s actual platform and risk.
- Secrets: Search for hardcoded API keys, passwords, tokens, private certificates, and connection strings. Keep credentials out of source code and prompts; use an appropriate secret-management method for the deployment.
- Input validation: Check how the program handles user-supplied text, files, URLs, and configuration. Reject or safely handle unexpected values rather than assuming input is trustworthy.
- File boundaries: Inspect path handling. Make sure a requested filename or archive entry cannot cause the program to read, write, or delete files outside the intended project or folder.
- Permissions: Give the application only the file, account, device, and network access it needs. A design utility that only edits local images should not need broad access to unrelated personal data.
- Network traffic: Identify what is sent, to which service, and over what connection. Use HTTPS for network communication and make sure sensitive data is not transmitted unnecessarily.
- Errors and logs: Give users enough information to recover without exposing tokens, internal paths, customer data, or implementation details in an error message or log.
- Dependencies: Review package names, versions, maintainers, and known vulnerability alerts. Do not accept a suggested package merely because the code imports it successfully; check that it is the package you intended to use and that its license is suitable.
- Current APIs: Compare generated calls and security practices with current official API, SDK, and package documentation. A model may suggest an old interface or outdated authentication approach.
For a release review, use dependency vulnerability scanning and software composition analysis where available, then inspect the findings rather than treating a clean scan as a complete security guarantee. A scanner can identify known issues in packages it recognizes; it cannot prove that your application’s own logic is safe or that every risk has been found. Apply the same open-source license review you would use for other third-party code.
Protect both prompt data and application data
There are two separate privacy questions: what you disclose to the AI coding service, and what the resulting software collects or sends. Passing one check does not answer the other.

Decide what can go into prompts
Do not paste API keys, passwords, private connection strings, customer names, email addresses, or real usage data into a coding assistant unless the service and your organization’s policy explicitly allow that use. When a real example is not necessary, replace it with synthetic or anonymized data. Before using a service for work, check the applicable account settings, contract, and organizational rules for how prompts and outputs are handled; the sources here do not establish one provider policy that applies to every tool.
Inspect what the software does with information
Review the application’s network requests, local and cloud storage, permissions, logs, and privacy notice. Ask what information is collected, why it is needed, where it goes, how long it is retained, and who can access it. Check that behavior against what the interface tells users. If a creative application processes sensitive client work, test with non-sensitive files first and verify that it does not upload material unexpectedly.
HM Revenue & Customs’ 28 January 2026 guidance for generative AI in commercial tax software calls for strong data-security and privacy measures, privacy by design, a secure development lifecycle, and transparency about information processing. It says AI “should support, not replace, human judgment.” Tax software handles a particular sensitive domain, so its guidance is an example of stricter domain-specific expectations—not a universal legal standard for creative products. Requirements for another product depend on its data, users, and applicable law.
Check accessibility and creative control
A visually polished interface can still be difficult or impossible for some people to use. For an interactive interface, test the experience directly rather than assuming the generated UI handled accessibility.

- Navigate the full workflow with a keyboard. Check that focus follows a logical order, stays visible, and does not become trapped in a dialog.
- Check that buttons, fields, icons, and other controls have accessible names that explain their purpose.
- Test with a screen reader and confirm that important status changes, errors, and results are announced in a useful way.
- Check text and interface contrast, including labels and controls that may be easy to miss in a creative workspace.
- Repeat key tasks at the target display size and with the assistive technology relevant to your users.
Ask the coding tool for accessible names, keyboard behavior, and screen-reader support if those features are missing, but verify the implementation in the target application. Microsoft’s guidance specifically identifies accessible names, logical keyboard focus, screen-reader testing, and contrast as areas generated interfaces may omit.
Accessibility is only one part of creative control. Confirm that the software preserves originals, makes edits visible, and gives users a way to preview or reverse changes where practical. For destructive or difficult-to-reverse actions, require confirmation and retain a recoverable path. Microsoft also cautions that AI features should keep a human involved in consequential or irreversible actions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Assess copyright, licensing, and your records
Do not treat a tool’s label, a generated-code explanation, or a provenance mark as clearance to use the output. For commercial use, inspect code that looks unusually familiar, identify third-party components, and check the relevant licenses and contractual terms. A software license, a provider’s terms, copyrightability, and a possible third-party infringement claim are different questions; answering one does not settle the others.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe U.S. Copyright Office’s January 2025 summary says that copyright protection for AI output depends on whether a human determined sufficient expressive elements. It identifies human-authored expression perceptible in the output and human creative arrangements or modifications as examples; prompts alone are not enough. The Office also says that AI assistance or inclusion of AI-generated material does not by itself prevent copyrightability of a larger human-authored work. Its position concerns U.S. copyrightability. It does not settle ownership under a tool contract, third-party infringement, software license obligations, or the law of another jurisdiction.
Best Value
Keep a useful record of the work behind a release: the generated changes you accepted, your human edits and selection, testing performed, dependency and license checks, and any decisions about user-facing disclosure. These records help explain how the software was built and what was reviewed; they are not a substitute for permissions or legal advice.
Decide whether disclosure or provenance applies
Disclosure is not the same as provenance. Disclosure is a communication or legal obligation in a particular context; provenance information is a signal about where content came from or how it was handled. Neither should be treated as automatic proof that software is accurate, legally owned, unedited, or safe.
For an EU-facing deployment, determine whether the provider or deployer, the system, and the particular generated or manipulated content fall within Article 50 of the EU AI Act. The European Commission says relevant transparency obligations began applying on 2 August 2026. A transition through 2 December 2026 applies to qualifying AI systems already placed on the market before 2 August 2026. The obligations depend on the content and use; the dates alone do not tell a particular developer whether a duty applies. The Commission’s Code of Practice is voluntary support, not a replacement for the law, and gives context-specific treatment to creative works and human editorial review. Check current Commission guidance and the facts of the deployment before deciding what is required.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Credentials or watermarks may help signal provenance for supported media, but they do not prove accuracy, ownership, or context. Metadata can be lost during conversion or screenshots, and extensive editing can make some watermarks undetectable. OpenAI has also said text watermarking is less suitable for code snippets because code has fewer plausible next-token choices. Do not promise that a detector can reliably identify generated software or use provenance marks as a substitute for reviewing the code.
Use a release gate suited to the software
Before adopting or distributing an AI-assisted creative application, compare the workflow against these release questions. The right level of review depends on what the software can access and the harm a mistake could cause.
| Review area | Evidence to look for | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Human review | A reviewer can inspect and understand the consequential code changes. | A fluent explanation means the code is correct. |
| Testing | Tests cover the target platform, normal tasks, edge cases, and failure recovery. | A successful demo covers real use. |
| Dependencies | Package identities, versions, vulnerabilities, and licenses have been checked. | A package suggestion is safe or legally suitable by default. |
| Privacy and security | Prompts are approved for the data involved; the app’s permissions, storage, and network behavior are understood. | Prompt privacy establishes what the resulting app does, or vice versa. |
| Accessibility and control | Target users can complete key tasks, and risky changes have a human-controlled recovery path. | Generated interface code is accessible because it renders correctly. |
| Rights and transparency | Human contribution, third-party material, terms, and any applicable disclosure decision are documented. | A watermark, provider label, or one jurisdiction’s rule resolves every rights question. |
If you cannot answer a row, treat it as an unresolved release risk. Reduce the software’s access, limit it to a test environment, remove sensitive data, or delay distribution until the missing check is complete. A local, reversible helper script and a public application that handles client files do not need identical review, but neither should be trusted solely because AI produced plausible code.
What the evidence does—and does not—establish
The guidance here draws on sources with different scopes: Microsoft’s Windows developer recommendations, HMRC’s commercial tax-software guidance, the U.S. Copyright Office’s copyrightability analysis, European Commission material on EU transparency rules, and OpenAI comments about provenance signals. They do not determine which law, platform agreement, provider terms, or disclosure rule governs an individual product. That depends on the reader’s location, product, distribution plan, intended users, and tool contract. The cited sources also do not provide a measured defect, vulnerability, or copyright-dispute rate for AI-generated software used in creative work.
