Make your recovery plan while you can still open your wallet: identify its exact recovery method, back up every required credential, store the backup securely, and verify that it works using the wallet maker’s supported process. A recovery phrase, device PIN, optional passphrase, recovery shares, and provider login are different things; which ones you need depends on your wallet.
First, identify how your wallet can be recovered
Write down the wallet’s exact name, device model, account type, backup format, and official recovery route. Check the current instructions from the wallet maker or provider for that specific setup. Do not assume a company can retrieve a self-custody wallet’s credentials: Coinbase says it does not have access to a Coinbase Wallet recovery phrase, and Phantom says it cannot recover lost credentials for users.

| Recovery design | What may be required | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Self-custody recovery phrase | The phrase for that wallet; some setups also require a separate passphrase. | Which phrase belongs to each wallet, the supported restore procedure, and whether an optional passphrase was used. |
| Hardware-wallet backup | The backup supported by the device and, depending on setup, the device PIN or an additional passphrase. | Which replacement devices and backup formats are compatible, and how the maker says to restore or check the backup. |
| Provider-managed or email/social-login wallet | The provider account or the wallet’s documented recovery method. | The provider’s current recovery steps and what happens if the email, social account, or other sign-in method is unavailable. Specific requirements are not stated in the provider examples cited here. |
| Institutional key-shard recovery | The organization-specific recovery passphrase and, in Coinbase Prime’s documented design, a signer from the same portfolio. | Who holds each required element, who can act as a backup signer, and the official procedure for recovering the shard. |
| Multi-share backup | A sufficient number of the shares, based on the wallet’s configured recovery threshold. | The exact threshold, share locations, compatible device or software, and the maker’s restoration procedure. |
These designs are not interchangeable. A provider-managed wallet may have different recovery options from a self-custody wallet, and an institutional key-shard process is not the same as restoring a conventional wallet from a phrase.

- Enjoy Bluetooth connectivity, iOS access, and hours of battery use with this mobile-first, secure backup signer. Freedom you can depend on.
- Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
- Recovery phrase or other wallet backup, including a separate phrase for each wallet when the wallet design uses independent phrases. Coinbase Wallet says each recovery-phrase wallet has its own independent phrase.
- Optional passphrase, if you created one. BitBox warns that restoring without the same optional passphrase can open a different wallet.
- Device PIN, account login, or other credential required by your specific recovery method. A PIN that unlocks a device is not necessarily a substitute for the wallet backup.
- Recovery shares, any required threshold, and the locations of the shares.
- Any required hardware device, other signed-in device, provider account, or additional signer.
Keep the checklist separate from the secrets. It should tell an authorized person what kinds of items are needed and where to find them without exposing credentials to someone who only needs to read the instructions.
Create the backup while the wallet still works
- Open the genuine wallet app or device and follow its current official instructions to reveal, export, or create the supported backup.
- Copy the words or other backup details accurately and in the required order. Coinbase Wallet recommends checking spelling and order for a manual phrase backup.
- Do not photograph or screen-record a recovery phrase, paste it into a website, or send it to another person. Coinbase Wallet warns against screenshots and recordings; Coinbase says never to share or paste a recovery phrase into a website.
- Make a separate backup for every wallet that has its own phrase. Do not assume that one phrase restores every account in an app.
- Follow the maker’s procedure for any supported cloud or encrypted backup feature. Coinbase Wallet documents an encrypted iCloud or Google Drive option that requires a unique password; that feature should not be assumed to exist in other wallets.
Treat unsolicited requests for a phrase as suspicious. Coinbase says it will never ask for or have access to a Coinbase Wallet recovery phrase. BitBox’s guidance is to enter recovery words only on a hardware-wallet device, not into an arbitrary website or support chat.
Store the backup so it stays private and survives damage
Choose storage that balances confidentiality with protection from loss, fire, water, and other physical damage. Ledger advises keeping physical backups in separate secure locations and discusses durable metal plates as one option. A metal backup plate is not required, and a readable plate does not protect the phrase from someone who can access it. Check the specific product’s format and claims rather than assuming a plate is fireproof, waterproof, or compatible with every wallet’s backup.

- Trusted by 6 million users worldwide - buy, sell, swap, stake, and spend cryptocurrency directly. The secure offline storage wallet designed for how people actually use crypto wallets
- Keep the phrase private and avoid non-encrypted digital copies such as screenshots, notes apps, and ordinary cloud storage; Ledger specifically warns against these forms of storage.
- Consider whether separate secure locations improve resilience without making the backup too difficult for you or an authorized person to find.
- If using a provider’s encrypted backup feature, understand its password and account requirements, and keep that password available through a separate, secure plan.
- If using a multi-share or split backup, map each share’s location and the recovery threshold. Splitting a backup adds operational complexity; a missing share, unclear instructions, or insufficient shares can prevent recovery.
Verify the backup without putting the wallet at risk
Use the wallet maker’s official backup check or dry-run recovery process, if available. Confirm the words, order, format, and any additional passphrase or threshold requirement. Do not test a live phrase by entering it on an arbitrary website, into a support chat, or on an untrusted computer.
Trezor recommends checking a backup before wiping or resetting a device and before firmware updates. Keep the currently working wallet intact while you verify, and follow the exact procedure for your model and backup type. For supported Trezor configurations, its documentation describes BIP39 backups of 12 or 24 words and SLIP39 shares of 20 words. Those are Trezor-documented formats, not a universal word count for all wallets.
Trezor also documents multi-share backups with a configurable threshold. In its example, a 3-of-5 setup can still recover the wallet if two shares are lost or damaged. That is an example configuration, not a recommendation for every user. Trezor’s stated 128-bit security figures for its 12-word BIP39 backup and 20-word SLIP39 backup assume the words are genuinely random; do not generalize those figures to other wallets or backup designs.

Write recovery instructions for a future you—or an authorized helper
Keep a separate instruction sheet that identifies the wallet and device, names the backup format, lists any additional requirements, and points to the maker’s official recovery guide. State where the backup or shares are stored and how many shares are needed, but do not include the secret phrase itself in the instruction sheet.

If recovery could depend on another device, provider account, or signer, identify that dependency and make sure the relevant person understands their role. Coinbase Prime recommends multiple Onchain Signers as redundancy if a device is lost or damaged; this is an institutional example, not a universal instruction for consumer wallets.

The backup is missing, but the wallet still opens
Do not wait for the device to fail. Ledger advises creating a new wallet with a new phrase and moving funds if the old phrase is lost but the wallet remains accessible; Trezor similarly advises moving funds to a wallet with a known backup. This is a sensitive operation: follow the wallet maker’s official process carefully and avoid exposing keys or phrases during migration.

The phrase works, but an extra passphrase may be missing
Check the wallet’s official instructions and your own records before concluding that the phrase is wrong. In a setup that uses an optional passphrase, restoring without the same passphrase can open a different wallet. Do not discard the original backup or move funds based only on seeing an empty wallet.
The wallet is inaccessible and no valid backup remains
Recovery may be impossible. Phantom says that a user logged out on all devices without a backup cannot restore access; Trezor likewise warns that losing access without a valid backup can mean losing the wallet. Do not trust anyone who promises they can recover a self-custody wallet merely by asking for its phrase or private key.
