Neither is universally safer. A hardware wallet keeps an individual private key offline; a multisig wallet requires a preset number of separate keys to approve an action. For personal funds, an offline signer is a practical defense against online key theft. For shared funds or a treasury, multisig can prevent one key from acting alone. You can combine them by using hardware wallets as multisig signers—but neither approach prevents a user from approving a deceptive transaction.
What each wallet protects against
Hardware wallet: isolating a private key
A hardware wallet stores a private key offline and uses it to sign transactions. This can reduce the risk that malware or an attacker controlling the connected computer will steal the key. It does not make the transaction itself safe: the signer still has to understand and approve what is being signed. Ethereum.org’s security guidance recommends checking transaction details, including the exact recipient address; Ethereum transactions are irreversible.

Multisig: requiring more than one approval
A multisig wallet enforces a threshold: a configured number of separate keys must approve an action. For example, in a 2-of-3 setup, two of the three designated signers must approve. This can stop one compromised or misused key from acting alone, provided signers are genuinely separate and independently secured. Ledger’s multisig explanation describes threshold signing, while Ethereum.org’s account-abstraction overview discusses smart-contract wallet policies such as multiple signatures for high-value transactions, backup keys, and key replacement.

| Question | Hardware wallet | Multisig wallet |
|---|---|---|
| Online private-key exposure | Reduces exposure by keeping the key offline while signing. | Depends on how each signer key is stored; multisig alone does not keep keys offline. |
| Can one key authorize a transfer? | Usually, the individual key can authorize an action on its own. | Not if the configured threshold requires more keys than one; the threshold determines the rule. |
| Transaction review | A device can present signing details, but the user still needs to understand them. | Multiple approvals add reviewers, but a threshold does not itself identify a malicious request. |
| Recovery and availability | Recovery depends on protecting the wallet’s recovery phrase and following the device’s recovery process. | Enough active signers must remain available to meet the threshold; lost or unavailable keys can complicate recovery. |
| Coordination and speed | Typically requires the individual holder to approve. | Requires coordination among enough signers, which can slow authorization. |
| Setup and ongoing costs | Depends on the device and setup chosen; no general cost comparison is established here. | Depends on the wallet implementation and any on-chain actions; no general cost comparison is established here. |
There is no cited controlled comparison showing that one approach produces a lower overall loss rate. The choice is about which risks and operating burdens fit your situation, not a proven universal security ranking.

- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
Neither method replaces careful transaction approval
Phishing, deceptive interfaces, and confusing signing requests can target users of either approach. A hardware wallet may protect a key from the connected computer, but it cannot make a harmful approval harmless. Multisig can add independent review only if signers actually inspect the request rather than approving automatically.
The Ethereum Foundation has described blind signing as a significant user-experience security problem. Its May 12, 2026 article on clear signing says the goal should be “What You See Is What You Sign” and that clear signing should be the default. That is a design goal for making approvals understandable, not a guarantee that every transaction or wallet currently provides a clear description. Ethereum Foundation materials also frame wallet security in terms that include transparent transactions, approval management, key handling, and frontend verification.

Can hardware wallets be used with an Ethereum multisig?
Yes. The approaches are complementary: a hardware wallet can hold a signer key, while an Ethereum multisig contract sets how many signers must approve. Ledger describes using a Ledger signer with Safe for Ethereum and other EVM-chain multisig wallets. Its product capabilities and supported devices are specific to Ledger’s service, so check current compatibility for the exact device, network, and multisig implementation before relying on it. Ledger’s Safe explainer and Ledger Enterprise Multisig page describe its own setup and support.
Recovery, coordination, and smart-contract risks
Plan for lost or unavailable signers
A multisig threshold is also an availability rule. If too few signers can act, you may be unable to authorize necessary transactions. Decide who controls each signer, how signers can be reached, and what happens if someone loses access before depositing substantial funds. Test the recovery and authorization process with a low-stakes setup first. A hardware wallet also needs a recovery plan: protect its recovery phrase and do not store a digital screenshot of it.

Account for the contract layer
Contract-based multisig introduces smart-contract and configuration considerations in addition to signer security. Smart contracts can have vulnerabilities; the cited sources do not establish the risk profile of any particular Safe deployment or configuration. Review the specific implementation and its security information rather than assuming that multisig as a category eliminates contract risk.
Expect more coordination
Multisig can take longer because enough people or devices must approve. Ledger notes that its own Enterprise Multisig proposals and signatures do not themselves incur its listed network gas charges, while execution and on-chain changes do. Its product page also lists vendor-specific Ethereum service fees: a $10 flat fee for certain governance actions and a 0.05% transfer fee capped at $5,000 per transaction, in addition to network gas. These are Ledger product terms shown on its page accessed October 7, 2026—not general costs for Ethereum multisig—and should be checked against current terms before use.

Which approach fits your situation?
- Personal funds: A hardware wallet is a practical baseline if your main concern is keeping a key away from an online computer. Pair it with careful transaction review and safe recovery-phrase handling.
- Shared funds or a treasury: Consider multisig when you want an explicit rule that more than one designated key must approve. Choose a threshold that balances protection against the risk that signers become unavailable.
- Higher-value arrangements: Consider combining the controls by using independently secured hardware wallets as multisig signers. Establish who reviews transactions and test recovery and coordination before relying on the arrangement.
For Ledger Enterprise Multisig specifically, the vendor page accessed October 7, 2026 listed Ethereum Mainnet, Base, Optimism, Arbitrum, and Polygon support. It listed Ledger Stax and Ledger Flex as supporting its full signing experience; Nano X and Nano S Plus could connect and view but could not sign transactions in that product. Those capabilities describe that product at the time stated, not every Safe setup or hardware wallet.
