You can configure Windows to reopen OBS after a restart and ask OBS to start streaming, but that does not guarantee the church’s YouTube broadcast will resume for viewers. Set up OBS startup, choose the right YouTube event and auto-start behavior, and rehearse recovery on the church’s actual equipment before relying on it during a service.
What automatic recovery can—and cannot—do
The practical goal is to have Windows launch OBS after a restart and have OBS attempt to reconnect to YouTube. For a scheduled broadcast, YouTube’s auto-start setting determines whether encoder streaming also makes the event live to viewers. These are separate states: OBS can be sending video while the intended broadcast is not yet viewer-facing live.

YouTube documents encoder auto-start and auto-stop settings, scheduled events, stream keys, and reusing stream settings. Its guidance does not promise that a computer reboot will resume the same broadcast automatically. Treat this as an attempted recovery, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service, the same viewing URL, or recovery from every power or network failure.
Set up YouTube and OBS for the intended broadcast
1. Prepare the scheduled church event

In YouTube Studio, schedule the church broadcast or prepare the relevant stream. Scheduled streams can appear to subscribers as upcoming, and viewers can choose “Notify me.”

Decide whether encoder auto-start and auto-stop are appropriate for this event. YouTube says, “When these settings are on, you can start or stop streaming from your encoder.” For a scheduled stream, OBS’s guide explains that auto-start determines whether starting OBS streaming makes the broadcast live for viewers; with it off, a separate go-live action may be required. “Reuse settings” copies the selected auto-start and auto-stop choices to a new stream.

Use the stream key for the intended broadcast in OBS. A stream key tells an encoder where to send the feed; treat it like a password and do not publish it or expose it on screen.
2. Tell OBS to start streaming when Windows opens it
OBS’s --startstreaming launch option requests that OBS start streaming when it launches. A community-documented approach is to add the option after the OBS executable in its shortcut target, then place that shortcut in the Windows Startup folder. Alternatively, configure a task in Task Scheduler to launch OBS with the same option. Startup-folder and Task Scheduler behavior can vary with the Windows sign-in and task configuration; test which one works on the church PC rather than assuming the task will run as intended.

Do not treat OBS opening as proof that recovery worked. Confirm that OBS is actually sending data and that YouTube shows the correct scheduled event live to viewers.

Choose a startup method and handle network timing

An OBS forum discussion warns that a computer or OBS may start before the network is ready. If the first connection attempt fails, automatic reconnect may not be enough. Consider a delayed or connectivity-aware task only after testing the church’s network and startup sequence; no one delay or script is a universal fix.
Reduce the chance of an update restart during worship
In Windows Update, set active hours to cover the church’s preparation, service and teardown window, and schedule planned restarts outside it. Microsoft says Windows tries to restart when a device is not in use and allows users to schedule a restart or set active hours. Active hours reduce automatic restarts during those hours; they do not replace installing updates. Pausing updates is temporary, so plan time to install updates and restart the machine before a service rather than disabling updates indefinitely.
Managed Windows computers may also have controls through Group Policy, mobile device management (MDM), or policies. Microsoft marks some restart policies as legacy or inapplicable to Windows 11. Check the documented applicability for the church PC’s Windows version before using a policy or an old registry recipe.

Before a service, perform a controlled Windows restart. Confirm that Windows reaches the expected sign-in state and that the chosen Startup-folder shortcut or scheduled task launches OBS.

Check OBS for a successful connection and outgoing stream data. If it does not connect, note whether the network was ready and whether OBS needs to be retried after connectivity returns.

Check YouTube Studio for the intended event and its viewer-facing live state. Do not infer success merely because OBS opened or reports a streaming state.

Have a volunteer practise the manual recovery path: sign in if needed, open OBS, select the correct YouTube stream configuration, start streaming, and verify the event is live in YouTube Studio.

Troubleshooting after a restart

OBS never opens: Check that the shortcut is in the correct Windows Startup folder or that the Task Scheduler task is enabled and configured for the church’s sign-in scenario. Test by restarting and observing the actual account.

OBS opens but does not stream: Verify that the launch option is attached to the OBS executable, that the intended stream configuration is selected, and that the network is online. If the PC starts before the network, retry after connectivity is available or test a delayed or connectivity-aware launch.

OBS sends data but viewers cannot watch: Check YouTube Studio’s status for the intended scheduled event. Confirm its auto-start setting; the encoder connection alone does not establish that the broadcast is live to viewers.

The wrong event or stream is selected: Check the YouTube event and associated stream configuration before starting. Keep the stream key private and confirm it belongs to the intended feed.

A stopped broadcast will not continue: YouTube’s official guidance does not guarantee reboot recovery of the same event. User reports differ on what happens after a stream stops or disconnects, so use the manual recovery procedure and confirm the event’s current state rather than assuming it can resume.
