To make a Chromebook louder, raise the ChromeOS volume slider and make sure sound is going to the intended output device. If the built-in speakers are already at maximum, a compatible external speaker may suit your listening needs better; ChromeOS does not offer a universal software setting that overrides a Chromebook’s hardware volume limit.
Turn up the Chromebook’s volume
- Use Quick Settings: Select the time in the bottom-right corner of the screen, then drag the volume slider to the right.
- Check Audio settings: Open Settings > Device > Audio. Adjust Output volume and check which device is selected. Google’s interface marks the active output with a green check. Exact labels and controls can vary by ChromeOS version and connected device. Google’s Chromebook audio instructions describe these controls.
Make sure sound is going to the right device
If the slider is high but the sound is still quiet, check the selected output in Audio settings. Headphones, a monitor, or a connected speaker may be selected instead of the Chromebook’s built-in speakers. Choose the output you want and test the sound again.

Use a Bluetooth speaker
A compatible Chromebook can connect to a Bluetooth speaker. Pairing the speaker and selecting it for playback are separate steps:

- Turn on Bluetooth in ChromeOS and pair the speaker. Follow the Chromebook’s Bluetooth connection instructions.
- Open Settings > Device > Audio and select the paired speaker as the output. Confirm it has the active-device check mark.
- Raise the Chromebook’s output volume and use the speaker’s own volume control, if it has one.
A Bluetooth speaker can offer a different listening option, but it does not guarantee a particular increase in loudness. Results depend on the Chromebook, the speaker, its settings, and where you listen. Check compatibility before choosing a speaker.

Built-in speakers and an external speaker: what changes?

Check whether the problem is one app or the Chromebook
Play audio from another app or source. If only one recording or app sounds quiet, the difference may be specific to that content rather than the Chromebook’s system output. If sound remains unusually quiet or becomes distorted across sources, note the Chromebook’s exact model and consult its manufacturer’s support information. Speaker limits and repair needs depend on the model.
What mono audio does—and does not do
Mono audio is an accessibility option, not a documented volume boost. It plays the same sound through both speakers so listeners are less likely to miss audio carried in only one stereo channel. Google explains the feature in its ChromeOS accessibility guidance and Chromebook accessibility settings.

Is there a setting that makes every Chromebook louder?
No universal ChromeOS setting is established for exceeding each Chromebook model’s hardware limit, and there is no single maximum loudness that applies to all models. If the built-in speakers are at full output, selecting an appropriate external speaker is an alternative—not a guarantee of a particular sound level. Avoid treating software add-ons or experimental settings as proven fixes for a hardware limit.
