You can install a Canon printer without its CD. Find the exact model on Canon’s Software & Drivers support page, select the computer’s operating system and version, download the needed driver or software, then run the installer and follow its connection prompts.
Find the correct Canon support page
- Open Canon USA’s Software & Drivers portal.
- Enter the printer’s exact model name as printed on the device. Choose the matching result from the suggestions; similar model names may have different downloads.
- On the model’s support page, check the detected operating system and version. Change them if they are incorrect, since downloads depend on OS compatibility. Canon’s general instructions are in its software and driver download guide.
Canon USA’s portal is intended for the United States. If you are elsewhere, use the Canon support site for your region.

Choose only the downloads you need
The model page lists files available for that printer and selected operating system; the list varies by model. The printer driver is the core item for printing. Add scan software or other utilities only if you need those functions and they are offered for your model. Firmware and manuals are separate downloads, not prerequisites for ordinary driver installation. If the page offers Load More, select it to reveal additional listings.

Install the download and connect the printer
- Open the downloaded file from your computer’s download location.
- On Windows, launch the
.exeinstaller. On macOS, open the.dmgfile and run the included.pkginstaller. - Follow the on-screen instructions. Connect the printer by USB, Wi-Fi, or Ethernet when prompted, using a connection method supported by your model.
When setup is complete, print a test page. If you installed scan software, open it and check scanning separately. Check firmware only if you chose to download firmware.

If you cannot find a driver or complete setup
- No driver appears: Recheck the exact model and selected operating system and version. A printer may not have a separate driver for every platform; consult its own support page rather than assuming another model’s files apply.
- No Mac driver appears: Canon says certain PIXMA TS, TR, and CanoScan models use AirPrint for Mac printing and scanning, so a separate Mac driver may not be listed for those devices. This does not apply to every Canon printer; verify your specific model.
- The installer fails: Canon advises Windows users to remove older drivers for the product before installing and to use an account with administrator privileges if needed. On macOS, use an account with appropriate privileges.
- The computer does not detect a USB-connected printer: Make sure the printer is powered on and try another USB port directly on the computer.
- A network printer is not detected: Check that the printer and computer are connected to the network. Security software may block ports the printer uses; the relevant network steps depend on the model.
Do you need a CD, cable, or every listed program?
No CD is needed for the standard download-and-install process. A USB cable is only relevant if you choose USB and do not already have a suitable cable. Check the printer’s ports and instructions before buying one; cable connectors are not established for every model. You also do not need to install every item on the download page: select the driver and any optional software required for the functions you plan to use.
