You do not need to build a fully enclosed mascot suit to make a wearable Buddy the Unicorn costume. The practical home method is to modify an orange unicorn onesie: add a purple heart across the zipper, cover the hood with orange shag faux fur, reinforce the soft horn, attach lightweight decorative eyes, and finish with Buddy’s bandana, white mittens and white slip-on sneakers.

This approach keeps the costume easier to put on, easier to see and breathe in, and substantially simpler than constructing a rigid mascot head. The instructions below show how to make the details look intentional without blocking the zipper, face opening or the wearer’s vision.

What this costume build is—and what it is not

The base is an orange unicorn onesie with its own soft horn, mane and tail. You are modifying the hood and chest rather than replacing the entire garment. The purple heart is split around the zipper, the hood receives shag fur in separate panels, and the eyes sit outside the wearer’s real face opening as decoration.

A full mascot head is optional, not a requirement. A mascot-style build can look more dramatic, but it involves more advanced prop or fursuit construction and creates additional concerns around weight, ventilation, sight lines and how the head is supported. Community advice for that route points makers toward general mascot-head and fursuit tutorials; verified Buddy-specific measurements are not established. For a home costume, the onesie modification gives you the recognizable details with fewer structural problems.

Materials and preparation

Gather the garment and decorations before cutting anything. The documented kit uses these components:

  • Orange unicorn onesie with a hood, soft horn, mane and tail
  • Purple felt for the chest heart
  • Orange shag faux fur for the hood
  • White foam eye domes
  • Fabric fusion glue
  • White slip-on sneakers
  • Red bandana
  • White fuzzy mittens
  • Paper for templates
  • Scissors suitable for felt and fabric, plus small snips for cutting the faux-fur backing
  • Needle and thread for reinforcing the horn base and eye backing patches
  • A mirror or a helper for the final fit and visibility checks

Work with the onesie clean, dry and fully unzipped when you are marking attachment areas. Try it on over the clothing you expect to wear underneath, but do not glue or stitch while it is on your body. Remove the garment for every cutting, gluing and sewing operation. Keep the zipper, its pull and the seam visible while you plan the heart so the finished decoration cannot trap the closure.

Step 1: Make a purple heart that does not disable the zipper

The heart is made as two felt halves, one on each side of the zipper. When the onesie is zipped, the halves meet and read as one shape; when it is unzipped, the halves move apart with the garment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Try on the zipped onesie and locate the chest area. With the zipper fully closed, hold a sheet of paper between the armholes. This lets you judge the visible chest area on the actual garment instead of guessing from a flat pattern.
  2. Fold the paper and cut a symmetrical template. Draw or cut half of a heart along the fold, then open it. Keep the paper pattern manageable enough that it remains clear of the armholes and does not extend into the hood or lower body.
  3. Transfer the shape to purple felt. Trace the paper heart onto the felt and cut it out. A clean center line is important because the felt will be divided there.
  4. Split the felt down the center. Cut the heart into left and right halves. Do not round off the inner edges after splitting; those edges are the ones that will meet beside the zipper.
  5. Position each half with the zipper closed. Lay the felt on the chest and check that the two pieces form one heart. The zipper teeth, pull and seam must remain completely clear. Mark the placement if necessary, then open the onesie and recheck that neither half crosses the zipper track.
  6. Glue the halves to the fabric. Apply fabric fusion glue to the back of each felt half and press it onto its side of the chest. Keep adhesive away from the zipper teeth and pull. Use enough glue to secure the felt without creating a ridge along the closure.
  7. Let the heart cure flat before flexing the garment. Follow the adhesive manufacturer’s curing directions. Leave the onesie open and flat while the glue sets; repeatedly zipping and unzipping too soon can make the felt bridge the gap or buckle.
  8. Test the finished heart. Once cured, zip and unzip the onesie several times slowly. The halves should meet as one heart when closed, separate cleanly when opened and never catch in the teeth or pull.

If the heart buckles

Open the zipper and inspect the center edges. Any felt or glue bridging the zipper must be freed. If a half has shifted, remove or loosen that section, reattach it flat with the zipper open, and let it cure again before flexing the chest. Do not solve a buckling heart by forcing the zipper; that can damage both the decoration and the garment.

Step 2: Add shag to the hood without covering the face

The hood is where the costume gains its shaggy Buddy-like silhouette. Faux fur should be attached in planned crown and side panels, not wrapped indiscriminately around the opening. The face opening, ears, muzzle, mane and soft horn remain clear.

Plan the fur panels with paper templates

  1. Map the hood. Identify the crown, the left and right side areas, the face opening, both ears, the muzzle and the existing mane and horn. The fur pieces should decorate the hood fabric around these features rather than bury them.
  2. Make paper templates. Hold paper against the crown and each side panel, shaping it to the hood’s curves. Mark the boundaries of the face opening and every feature that must stay uncovered. Trim the paper until it lies flat without folding over the opening.
  3. Check the templates on the hood. Dry-fit the paper pieces with the hood on a table. Look at the front, sides and top. A panel that seems harmless from above can still fall toward the eyes when the hood is worn.
  4. Transfer to the faux-fur backing. Place each template on the backing side of the orange shag faux fur. Mark the outline and the location of the face opening. Keep the pile direction in mind before cutting.

Cut the backing, not the pile

Use short snips through the backing rather than long cuts through the fur fibers. Short snips preserve the shaggy edge and reduce the amount of pile chopped off along the seam. Cut each crown and side panel separately, and keep the face-opening boundary crisp. Do not cut into the hood’s ears, muzzle, mane or soft horn to make room for a panel; resize the template instead.

After cutting, turn each piece pile-side up and dry-fit it on the hood. Confirm that the fur does not cover the actual face opening and that it will not fall across the wearer’s eyes. If the pile direction is wrong, adjust the piece before applying glue. Direct the pile toward the back or sides so it frames the face instead of dropping forward.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Glue in small sections

  1. Work with one panel at a time. Place the hood flat and keep the remaining fur pieces out of the adhesive.
  2. Apply glue to the backing. Spread fabric fusion glue over a small section of the faux-fur backing, not over the visible pile. Small sections let you keep the panel aligned and prevent adhesive from drying before the backing is pressed down.
  3. Press the panel onto the hood. Start at a stable edge and smooth toward the next section. Keep the face-opening edge exactly where you marked it. Avoid stretching the fur, since a stretched panel can pull the hood out of shape.
  4. Continue around the panel. Add glue to the next small section, press, and check the pile direction as you go. Stop if the panel begins to drift toward an ear, muzzle, mane or horn.
  5. Repeat for the crown and side panels. Let attached pieces cure according to the glue directions before manipulating the hood.

Hide joins after curing

When the adhesive has cured, comb the pile over each join. The long fibers can conceal a seam in the backing without adding another layer of glue. Trim only fibers that intrude into the face opening. Keep the opening generous enough for the wearer to turn the head and see to the sides; do not trim the hood around the chin to compensate for fur that has been placed too far forward.

If a join remains visible, first comb the pile from both sides across it. If the backing itself has lifted, repair that attachment with the hood off the body. Working on a worn hood can press adhesive against skin, hair or clothing and makes it harder to keep the repair flat.

Step 3: Secure the soft horn and add decorative eyes

Keep the hood’s soft horn

The onesie’s existing soft fabric horn is the safest, simplest horn for this build. If its base feels loose, reinforce it from inside the hood with small stitches through a broad patch of fabric. Stitch through the horn’s fabric base and the hood material, distributing the support rather than pulling one tiny point tight. Keep the stitches away from the wearer’s face opening and avoid creating a hard interior lump.

A rigid resin spiral wand can be used as a separate handheld photo prop, but it should not be cut, glued or sewn to the hood. Attaching a rigid object to a flexible hood can make the garment uncomfortable and can turn a decorative piece into a hazard when the wearer moves or sits.

Prepare the foam eyes

  1. Paint one fixed black pupil on each white foam dome. Place the pupil consistently so both eyes face the same direction. Let the paint dry fully before handling the domes.
  2. Choose the position while the hood is flat. The eyes go high on either side of the horn, outside the wearer’s actual face opening. They are not viewing holes and must not be positioned where they cover the opening.
  3. Make broad backing patches. Attach each dome to a reinforced fabric backing patch rather than relying on a small spot of glue on the hood’s soft surface. A broad patch spreads the load and is easier to stitch securely.
  4. Stitch the patch edges to the hood. Sew around the patch perimeter with the hood off the body. Keep the stitches even and check from inside that no sharp end points toward the wearer.
  5. Put the hood on and reassess. The eyes should stay high and balanced without pulling the hood forward. If they interfere with sight or make the hood slide, remove them and reinforce or reposition the backing instead of tightening the hood around the chin.

Because the eyes are decorative, the wearer must see through the original face opening. Never treat the foam domes as windows, and do not cut holes through them in an attempt to create vision. A clear opening and a hood that can be lowered easily are more important than keeping an eye placement that compromises safety.

Step 4: Finish Buddy’s recognizable accessories

Complete the outfit only after the chest and hood work is secure. Tie the red bandana loosely below the face opening so it reads as a neck accessory without constricting the wearer. Pair the onesie with white slip-on sneakers and white fuzzy mittens. Keep the mane and tail visible; do not cover them with extra fabric or fur.

Try the entire outfit together, including the shoes and mittens, before the final check. The bandana should not fall into the face opening, the mittens should not make the zipper difficult to operate, and the shoes should allow ordinary walking. These finishing pieces supply the color blocks and silhouette that make the modified onesie recognizable without adding weight to the hood.

Fit, visibility and ventilation checks

A costume that looks right on a table can behave differently once the wearer moves. Use a mirror or have a helper observe the hood while the wearer performs each check below. Make all corrections with the hood off the body.

  • Sitting and standing: Sit, stand and bend naturally. Confirm that the heart does not catch, buckle or pull at the zipper.
  • Walking: Walk several steps in the complete outfit. Check that the tail, mane, bandana, mittens and shoes do not interfere with movement.
  • Forward and side vision: Confirm that the wearer can see through the original face opening and can look to both sides. The foam eyes must not become an obstruction.
  • Airflow: Check that the face opening remains clear and that the wearer can breathe comfortably. Take cooling breaks with the hood down.
  • Emergency removal: Open the zipper and lower the hood easily. Do not accept a decoration that prevents the garment from being removed quickly.

Have the helper watch the costume while the wearer moves, because a hood can shift in ways the wearer cannot see. If the hood drops forward, remove the decorative eyes and reinforce their backing rather than tightening the hood around the chin. A snug-looking hood is not a successful trade if it restricts movement, airflow or removal.

Common problems and precise fixes

The heart bridges the zipper

Unzip the garment and look for felt or glue crossing the teeth, pull or seam. Free the obstruction and reattach the halves flat with the zipper open. Let the adhesive cure before testing the closure again. The heart should only appear continuous when the zipper is closed; it must never be physically joined across the zipper.

The hood falls forward

First remove the decorative foam eyes and test the hood without them. If the hood stays in place, the eyes or their backing are adding too much pull. Rebuild the backing with a broad patch, move the eyes higher and farther from the face opening, or leave them off. Do not tighten the hood around the chin to compensate.

A fur seam is visible

Comb the pile from both sides over the join after the glue has cured. If the backing has lifted, take the hood off the wearer and repair the attachment while it lies flat. Trim only fibers that enter the face opening; trimming the surrounding pile can make the seam more obvious.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The horn feels heavy

Use the soft hood horn and keep any rigid spiral wand separate as a handheld prop. Do not attach the rigid piece to the hood, and do not replace the soft horn with a heavier object simply to make the spiral more prominent.

The fur covers the wearer’s eyes

Check the pile direction and the edge of the face-opening template. Comb the pile toward the back or sides, then trim only the fibers intruding into the opening. If the backing itself is too close, remove and resize the panel rather than repeatedly trimming the visible fur.

Onesie modification versus a full mascot build

Both approaches can produce a unicorn character, but they demand different levels of construction and create different compromises.

Approach Construction time and complexity Comfort and ventilation Buddy signature details What you need to know
Modified orange unicorn onesie Simpler home construction: felt, faux fur, glue and limited reinforcement Lighter and more breathable because the wearer uses the onesie’s existing hood and face opening Supports the purple heart, shaggy hood, soft horn, eyes, bandana, mane and tail Requires careful zipper clearance and fit testing
Full mascot head and suit More advanced prop or fursuit construction Can introduce additional weight, ventilation and sight-line challenges Can look more dramatic, but Buddy-specific measurements are not established General mascot-head or fursuit techniques are needed; it is not necessary for a home version

For a first wearable version, the onesie route is the practical choice. It concentrates the work on visible signature details instead of asking you to engineer a new head, internal support and complete ventilation system.

How to plan the work so details stay removable and usable

Think of every addition in relation to the garment’s moving parts. The zipper must open, the hood must lower, and the face opening must remain the wearer’s only viewing area. Before gluing a piece, ask whether it could catch in the zipper, fall into the eyes, pull the hood forward or stop the wearer from removing the costume.

  • Use paper templates before cutting expensive faux fur.
  • Dry-fit every fur piece and eye position before applying adhesive.
  • Cut faux-fur backing with short snips so the pile remains long at the edges.
  • Apply glue in small sections and keep the hood flat while it cures.
  • Reinforce load-bearing decorations with fabric backing and stitched edges.
  • Keep rigid props separate from the hood.
  • Perform the complete movement and removal check before wearing the costume at an event.

The result should be a flexible costume that can be put on and taken off normally. The purple heart should separate at the zipper, the shag should frame rather than cover the face, and the horn and eyes should remain light enough that the hood stays comfortable.

Optional adjacent project: a Buddy plush

If the goal is a soft Buddy figure rather than something a person wears, a Buddy the Unicorn crochet pattern is a separate craft option. It should be treated as a plush-making project, not as a substitute for the orange onesie modification: a crochet figure does not provide a hood, zipper, face opening or wearable ventilation.

Final pre-wear checklist

  1. Zip and unzip the onesie without the purple felt catching.
  2. Confirm that both heart halves meet cleanly when zipped.
  3. Check every fur edge around the face opening, ears, muzzle, mane and horn.
  4. Verify that the pile points toward the back or sides rather than across the eyes.
  5. Make sure the soft horn is secure and any rigid spiral wand remains separate.
  6. Confirm that the foam eyes are decorative, outside the face opening and not pulling the hood forward.
  7. Tie the bandana loosely and check that the mane and tail remain visible.
  8. Walk, sit, look down and turn the head in the complete outfit.
  9. Check airflow, forward and side vision, zipper access and easy hood removal.
  10. Plan cooling breaks with the hood down.
