For a translucent color wash over the image, use a semi-transparent gradient as the top background layer instead. Avoid setting opacity on the content container: it affects the element and its contents together.
Choose the effect you want
- Tinted or softened image: layer a translucent color over the background with a gradient.
- Image-only fade: put the image on a pseudo-element or separate child layer and set opacity there, leaving foreground content outside that layer.
CSS alpha values range from 0 (fully transparent) to 1 (fully opaque); 0.45 means 45% opacity. Adjust the alpha to control how strongly the layer shows through.
Add a translucent overlay
Use this when a color wash is acceptable and you want a compact solution without adding a separate element:

}Background layers are listed from top to bottom: the first listed layer is painted on top. Here, the translucent white gradient sits above the photo. Replace white with another RGB color to change the tint, and change 45% to make it more or less transparent. The photo itself has not become transparent; the overlay changes how it appears.

Fade only the image layer
When the image needs independent opacity and foreground content must stay crisp, create a positioned pseudo-element behind the content:

}The pseudo-element fills the .hero box and carries the image and its opacity; the heading, text, and controls remain on the main element. The isolation: isolate setting creates a local stacking context for this layered arrangement. Check the result in the actual component: existing positioned elements, stacking contexts, or other layered content can affect how it displays.
Why container opacity is usually the wrong fix
Putting opacity: 0.45 on .hero fades the element as a whole, including its text and controls. Use the gradient approach to change the background appearance, or put the image on a distinct layer when you need image-only fading.
Also, opacity is visual, not a way to disable an element. An element with opacity: 0 remains in the DOM and can still receive pointer events; focusable descendants can remain in the tab order. If content should not be interactive, change its interaction and accessibility behavior rather than relying on transparency.

Troubleshoot the result
- The text looks faded too: opacity is probably set on the container or a parent. Move it to the image pseudo-element, or use a translucent gradient overlay.
- The gradient does not appear above the photo: check the order in
background-image. Put the gradient first, since the first layer is on top. - The image layer covers content or disappears: inspect positioning and stacking in the real layout. The example uses a positioned container, a negative stacking level, and
isolation: isolate; other stacking contexts or positioned layers may change the outcome. - The image looks too faint or too strong: adjust the gradient alpha or pseudo-element’s
opacity. Lower opacity makes that layer more transparent.

Can CSS make the original image file transparent?
No. These techniques change how the image is rendered in the page; they do not edit or rewrite the image file.
