Changing OBS’s built-in theme changes only its controls—not the video you send to viewers. This guide covers all three, starting with the quickest OBS setting.
Change the OBS Studio theme
To change OBS’s interface appearance, open Settings and find the Theme drop-down. The OBS Project’s guide, published January 13, 2022, places it under General; in OBS Studio 30.2 and later, the setting is under Appearance. Choose a built-in theme or a custom theme that is already installed. If your menus differ, consult the OBS Themes Guide and check the documentation for your installed version.

This setting affects OBS’s interface on your computer. It does not add colors, graphics, alerts, or other design elements to the stream itself.
Install a custom OBS theme
OBS themes are made from a QSS stylesheet and image assets. The OBS Project describes QSS as a subset of CSS 2. Its guide recommends installing themes in the user configuration directory rather than keeping them only inside the application installation. Create the themes folder if it does not already exist.

- Get a theme package from a source you trust. Before installing community files, review who published them and whether they say which OBS versions they support.
- Place the theme’s QSS file and its associated image folder in the user
themesdirectory. Keep the package’s folder structure intact so the stylesheet can find its images. - Open OBS and select the theme from Settings > General > Theme, or from Settings > Appearance on OBS Studio 30.2 and later.
- Check the interface for missing graphics or display problems. If the theme does not appear, confirm the files are in the correct directory and that the package is compatible with your OBS version.
The OBS Project’s theme-system documentation describes options added in OBS Studio 30.2, including variants that expose theme properties in Appearance settings and an auto-reload feature for theme development. Do not expect those advanced controls in older installations.
Customize what viewers see in OBS
For a viewer-facing theme, work with scenes and sources, not the OBS interface theme. A scene is a composed view; sources provide its elements, such as a camera, gameplay capture, text, images, or overlays. Arrange and layer those elements to establish a consistent look.

Build a scene or adapt a ready-made package
The OBS Project’s “Be Right Back” tutorial demonstrates making a scene from multiple layers, text, and static PNG or JPG images. You can create your own layouts or adapt a ready-made package. Streamlabs describes theme packages that may include starting-soon, live, be-right-back, and ending scenes, as well as overlays and alerts. A package is optional; it is one way to get a coordinated starting point.

Choose assets with transparency in mind
Use an image format that preserves the appearance you need. Elgato’s overlay guidance recommends PNG for static overlays that need transparency and WEBM for animated bars that need transparency through the animation. Those are vendor recommendations, not a guarantee that every asset or setup will behave identically. Check the current asset documentation and preview the file in the scene where you intend to use it.

Check the composition before going live
- Preview each scene and confirm titles, alerts, and other text are readable.
- Make sure overlays do not obscure important camera or gameplay areas.
- Test transitions and animated elements in the intended scene.
- Check that each source is visible and layered as intended before your first live stream.
The OBS Studio Overview Guide recommends testing a setup before going live; apply the same care after changing the visuals.
Customize your Twitch or YouTube channel page
Channel-page branding is separate from both OBS’s interface and the broadcast image. Make those changes in the platform’s own channel controls.

Twitch
Twitch’s Channel Page Setup guide covers channel details including accent color, panels, and a video-player banner shown while the channel is offline. Twitch’s Creator Dashboard documentation notes that some features are limited to Affiliates and Partners, so check eligibility for a specific control before planning around it.
YouTube
YouTube’s Channel customization controls in YouTube Studio cover channel layout, branding, and basic information. These affect the channel page rather than OBS or the scene viewers see during a broadcast.
