Enable livestreaming in advance
Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have had a livestream restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time livestream activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it before you plan to broadcast. See YouTube’s livestreaming access guidance.

Use audio you have the right to stream
Use an ocean recording you made or have permission to use for livestreaming. Check whether the license also covers worldwide use and any replay or recording you plan to publish. YouTube’s livestream terms make the broadcaster responsible for having the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation on Google services: Livestream terms and conditions.

YouTube scans live broadcasts for third-party material. A match can trigger a warning, replace the broadcast with a static placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. Even if you have a license, the rights holder may need to allowlist your channel to prevent an interruption. See YouTube’s guidance on copyrighted content in live streams.

Plan for continuous operation
With a local encoder, the computer, power, internet connection, and encoder all need to keep working. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health, but that is not a guarantee of uninterrupted service. Decide how you will respond to a power cut, lost connection, or encoder failure before treating the stream as 24/7.
Set up the black-screen ocean stream with an encoder
- Prepare the sources. Create a plain black video source and a continuous ocean audio track. The black frame can be a static image or a solid-colour video source in your encoder. Check that the audio file loops cleanly, without an unintended pause, click, or abrupt level change. Keep evidence of your audio rights.
- Create the livestream in YouTube Studio. Open YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live, and use the Live Control Room to create or schedule a stream. Choose the encoder option.
- Copy the connection details. In the Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into your encoder’s streaming settings. The key identifies where your encoder sends the feed; treat it as a password. Do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not control the stream. YouTube’s setup instructions are at Set up your encoder for live streaming.
- Configure video and audio. Select the black frame as the video input and the ocean recording as the audio input. Use settings the encoder and your upload connection can sustain. YouTube’s recommended encoder settings vary by resolution and frame rate, and it transcodes incoming live streams for different devices and network conditions; there is no single required bitrate established for this specific black-screen audio format. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and test your chosen settings.
- Start a test and check the feed. If useful, make the test unlisted or private. Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview: the picture should be black, the ocean audio should be clean and continuous, and stream health should be acceptable. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring the stream.
- Start the public stream and monitor it. When the preview and audio are right, start or schedule the broadcast as public. Keep an eye on stream health and audio, especially after changes to the encoder, source files, or network. For a true continuous target, arrange for someone or a process to notice interruptions and restart the encoder when necessary.
Choose a local software or hardware encoder
YouTube supports software encoders and standalone hardware encoders; a hardware unit is not a requirement. Choose based on the workflow you already know and how much you want to depend on a computer you control.

Understand replay limits and monetization uncertainty
A 24/7 live stream may not produce a complete replay
YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If viewers need an archive, make a separate local recording or prepare a separate replay asset; do not rely on the livestream archive to preserve the full broadcast. See YouTube’s livestream archive guidance.

Live does not mean automatically monetizable
YouTube’s monetization policies say repetitive or mass-produced material can be ineligible, and reused-content decisions are a separate consideration. A copyright license does not establish that a channel meets monetization rules. A long-running ambience format has no guaranteed outcome under the cited policy: make your original contribution and rights clear, and assess the channel against YouTube’s current requirements. Troubleshoot common problems
- Livestreaming is unavailable: verify the channel and check for restrictions. If this is your first activation, allow up to 24 hours for it to become available.
- The Live Control Room receives no feed: confirm the encoder is started and that the stream URL and key were copied correctly. If you suspect the key was exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- The picture is not black or the audio is missing: check that the intended video and audio sources are selected in the encoder, then preview again before restarting the public stream.
- The stream health is poor or the feed drops: test a bitrate and resolution the upload connection can sustain, check the local network and power, and monitor the encoder. YouTube’s guidance is to choose settings suited to the available connection and test them; it does not specify one bitrate for every black-screen ocean stream.
- The stream is interrupted by a copyright notice: review the audio source and license, and contact the rights holder about allowlisting your channel if you have permission. A license alone may not stop automated live matching.
- The full broadcast is missing from the archive: streams over 12 hours may not be captured. Use a separate recording if a complete replay matters.
