Use OBS with a VLC Video Source to play a rights-cleared playlist, then prepare visuals to match the same song order—or render each song and its visuals together as one audiovisual file. VLC can loop or shuffle a playlist, but OBS does not automatically match separate images to song changes or promise uninterrupted streaming. Test transitions, audio, and stream recovery before you promote a continuous broadcast.
What you need to make visuals change with the songs
- Rights-cleared audio: permission for the recordings and underlying musical works to be broadcast live on YouTube, in the relevant territories, and replayed if you keep an archive.
- A playlist: audio files arranged in the order you want, or a shuffled list if the sequence does not matter.
- A visual plan: prepare the matching image or video for each song, or render each song and its visuals into one complete audiovisual file.
- An encoder and a stable upload connection: OBS can compose and send the feed; YouTube provides the stream URL and stream key.
The simplest reliable way to guarantee that a visual changes at the exact song boundary is to combine that song’s audio and visual into one pre-rendered video file, then play those files in sequence. If you keep audio and visuals as separate sources, you must arrange and test their transitions yourself; the OBS documentation describes playlist playback, not automatic song-to-visual matching or audio-reactive effects. Set up the OBS and VLC playlist
1. Install VLC in the matching architecture
OBS requires VLC for its VLC Video Source. On a 64-bit installation of OBS, install 64-bit VLC; otherwise, the source may not appear.

- Open the OBS scene that will form your broadcast.
- Add a VLC Video Source and select the rights-cleared files in the sequence you want.
- Set the source to loop if the playlist should repeat. Choose shuffle only if you want the song order to vary; a fixed visual sequence is easiest to align with an ordered playlist.
- Place and size the source in the scene. If using separate visual sources, prepare a corresponding scene or transition for each track and verify that it changes at the right boundary.
OBS documents playlist looping and shuffle controls, but these controls govern media playback—not the stream’s uptime or separate visual switching. OBS Media Sources

3. Choose how to align visuals
- Pre-rendered song videos: pair each track with its own visual in a finished audiovisual file. Playlist progression then advances both together.
- Separate OBS visuals: make a visual sequence that mirrors the playlist and test every transition. Do not assume a playlist change will trigger a matching graphic automatically.
- Audio-reactive visuals: use a separate compatible visualizer or automation tool, and verify that it works with your installed OBS version and can run unattended. The cited OBS source does not document an automatic audio-reactive or song-matched visual feature.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Enable live streaming: make sure the channel can go live. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do this before the planned broadcast.
- Create or schedule the stream: in YouTube Studio, create a live stream and retrieve its stream URL and stream key.
- Enter the encoder details: put the URL and key into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password; anyone with access may be able to stream to your channel.
- Check the preview: start the encoder and wait for YouTube to receive the feed. Confirm the correct scene, song, visual, and audio are present before making the stream public or starting your planned run.

Choose a bitrate and test the full sequence
For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube lists a minimum bitrate of 5 Mbps and recommends 10 Mbps. These are encoder-setting recommendations, not guarantees of reach or uninterrupted playback. Set a bitrate your actual upload connection can sustain; a connection that cannot maintain it can cause buffering or stream-health warnings. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions when choosing resolution and frame rate.

Before relying on a long-running stream, test representative audio and visual motion, including at least one song transition and a playlist loop. Check both the encoder preview and the YouTube watch page, confirm song-to-visual alignment, and monitor stream health and audio/video quality. Clear music rights before broadcasting
YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility on the creator to have the necessary rights for live content worldwide, including music licensing rights involving artists, labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. Confirm that permission covers the intended live online broadcast, relevant territories, monetization if applicable, and any archived replay. Understand live Content ID interruption risk
YouTube says live matching may first warn the streamer; if the match continues, it may replace the stream with a static image without sound or terminate it. Access to YouTube, a Content ID claim policy, or a belief that a track is licensed is not proof that your broadcast has the necessary rights. Troubleshoot common failures
