On a Linux server that uses systemd, run the Gurbani stream process in the foreground as a system service, enable that service at boot, and set a restart policy. This handles both server restarts and unexpected process exits. The example below uses Liquidsoap; adapt its paths, account, and dependencies to your actual stream setup.
How automatic restart works
Boot activation and crash recovery are separate controls. systemctl enable configures a service to start through its boot target. The unit’s Restart= setting tells systemd what to do when the managed process exits or times out. For long-running services, systemd recommends Restart=on-failure; Liquidsoap’s production example uses Restart=always, which also restarts after a clean exit. An intentional stop through systemd is not automatically undone, and repeated failures can encounter start-rate limits. See systemd.service(5) and Liquidsoap’s production guide.

Keep the stream process in the foreground so systemd can supervise it and capture its output. Liquidsoap’s documentation recommends running it this way under a service manager. Do not configure it as a forking service if it can run in the foreground.

Create a systemd service for Liquidsoap
This reference unit follows Liquidsoap’s production example. It assumes the executable is at /usr/bin/liquidsoap, the script is at /etc/liquidsoap/gurbani.liq, and the service account is liquidsoap. Confirm those details on your server before using it.

Liquidsoap’s guide says its Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, and Alpine packages create a liquidsoap system account and group. Package behavior can vary, so verify that the account exists and can read the Liquidsoap script, configuration, and audio files. If your installation uses another account or file location, update User, Group, and ExecStart accordingly.
Choose the restart policy intentionally
Restart=on-failureis appropriate when an unexpected error should trigger recovery but a clean exit should stay stopped.Restart=alwaysis an option when any process exit, including a clean one, should relaunch the stream. Liquidsoap’s production example uses this policy.
Both choices can be affected by systemd’s restart limits if the process repeatedly fails; inspect the logs and fix the underlying problem rather than relying on restarts alone.

Account for networking and the stream server
Wants=network-online.target and After=network-online.target request and order startup around that target. They do not guarantee that a particular remote endpoint is reachable. The host’s network manager must implement the target meaningfully for its environment.
If Liquidsoap sends audio to Icecast, Icecast is a separate component that must also be installed and configured. Liquidsoap’s quickstart describes the generator-to-streaming-server-to-player chain and advises changing Icecast source and admin passwords when exposed publicly. Do not leave public services using default credentials.

Validate, enable, and start the service
- Check the Liquidsoap script after editing:
liquidsoap --check /etc/liquidsoap/gurbani.liqLiquidsoap’s production guide recommends this validation step. Resolve any reported script errors before restarting the service.
- Save the unit as
/etc/systemd/system/gurbani-radio.service, then tell systemd to reload unit files and enable and start it:sudo systemctl daemon-reload sudo systemctl enable --now gurbani-radio.service - Check boot activation and service state:
systemctl is-enabled gurbani-radio.service systemctl status gurbani-radio.service - Read this boot’s service logs:
journalctl -u gurbani-radio.service -bThe Debian systemd services guide covers enabling and checking services. Log access and retention depend on the host’s permissions and logging setup.
Test that it returns after a reboot
- Choose a safe maintenance window and reboot the server.
- After it comes back, run
systemctl is-enabled gurbani-radio.serviceandsystemctl status gurbani-radio.service. - Check
journalctl -u gurbani-radio.service -bfor the current boot’s startup output and any errors. - Open the public stream URL or listen from an independent client to confirm that audio reaches listeners.
A service showing as active confirms that systemd considers its managed process active; it does not prove that the expected audio is being served. The audio generator, streaming server, and listener are separate parts of the path.
Troubleshoot a stream that did not restart
- The unit is disabled: Enable the exact unit with
sudo systemctl enable gurbani-radio.service. Checksystemctl is-enabled gurbani-radio.serviceafterward. - The command works manually but the unit fails: Check the executable and script paths in
ExecStart, then review the current-boot journal. Confirm the configured service account can read the script, audio, and configuration files. - The service starts before the endpoint is available: Check how the host’s network manager implements
network-online.target. The unit’s ordering does not itself test connectivity to a remote stream endpoint. - The process keeps crashing: Find the first relevant error in the journal and investigate script syntax, permissions, dependencies, or credentials. Restart policy cannot repair a persistent underlying error, and systemd may limit repeated starts.
- The service is active but listeners hear silence: Check the audio source, Liquidsoap output, media-server mount or endpoint, and listener URL independently. A running generator does not establish that every downstream component is working.
