The playlist makes files play in sequence; matching media formats and a successful test are essential before leaving the stream unattended.
What you need before you start
- FFmpeg installed on a computer that can remain on and connected for the duration of the stream.
- Local video files you have the right to stream.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, plus its ingest URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
- A stable upload connection capable of sustaining the bitrate you choose.
YouTube says first-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours. See YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. The stream key is a credential: keep it private, and reset it in Studio if it is exposed.

Build a text playlist
Create a plain-text file in the same directory as your videos, for example playlist.ffconcat. The first line must be exactly ffconcat version 1.0, with no leading spaces or byte-order mark, for FFmpeg to recognize the format automatically. Add one file directive per video:
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'video-01.mp4'
file 'video-02.mp4'
file 'video-03.mp4'
Use paths relative to the playlist file or absolute paths. Quote paths containing spaces or special characters using concat syntax and test them with your FFmpeg build. The concat demuxer reads the listed files in sequence as one virtual input; see the FFmpeg Formats Documentation.

Check compatibility before streaming
The concat demuxer expects the files to have the same streams, codecs, and time bases. Differences in resolution, frame rate, audio layout, or codec can cause errors or uneven transitions. Test the complete playlist locally before sending it to YouTube.
- Check that every path resolves and that each file opens and plays through to its end.
- Confirm the video and audio streams are compatible across all files.
- Watch transitions for black frames, audio gaps, freezes, or abrupt changes.
- If a file has an inaccurate reported duration, the concat demuxer’s
durationdirective can override it; incorrect durations may otherwise produce timestamp artifacts.
FFmpeg’s default safe=1 rejects unsafe paths and directives. Avoid disabling this protection casually; use safe, straightforward paths where possible.

Set up YouTube Live and choose encoder settings
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room. Create or select the stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the stream. Keep the key out of screenshots, shared commands, and public scripts.
- Choose an ingest protocol supported by your setup. YouTube documents RTMP and RTMPS; prefer RTMPS when available.
- Choose a video codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and audio format supported by YouTube and your source files. YouTube documents H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video options, up to 60 fps, with AAC or MP3 audio.
- Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval where your encoder allows it. YouTube recommends two seconds and says the interval should not exceed four seconds.
YouTube’s current guidance accessed in 2026 lists 14 Mbps for 1080p30 H.264 and 8 Mbps for 720p30 H.264. These are recommended encoder bitrates, not guarantees that your internet connection can sustain the stream. Choose a bitrate appropriate to the resolution, frame rate, and codec, and test your actual upload capacity. See YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Send the playlist to YouTube and test it
FFmpeg’s concat playlist provides sequential input, but a complete streaming command depends on the installed FFmpeg version, the playlist paths, the media’s codecs, and the chosen YouTube settings. The available official documentation here does not establish one universal command for endless looping and streaming. Verify the options supported by your installed build and test a short private or unlisted stream before relying on a command in production.

- Start with a local playback test of the playlist and confirm that FFmpeg reaches each file in order.
- Configure your FFmpeg output for the selected video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval.
- Set the YouTube ingest URL and stream key in the output configuration. Do not publish a command containing a live key.
- Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview, stream health, and any warnings or error messages.
- Watch at least one transition between files and verify that both picture and sound continue as expected.
YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the real broadcast and monitoring stream health. Do not treat a successful start alone as proof that a long-running stream will remain healthy.

Set the stream to public, private, or unlisted according to who should be able to watch it. Confirm that you have the rights to every video and audio track in the playlist; having a local copy does not itself establish permission to broadcast it. YouTube provides rights-management controls, but whether a particular recording may be streamed depends on the rights that apply to it. Scheduled streams and channel-specific settings are managed in Studio.

Troubleshoot common failures
FFmpeg rejects the playlist
- Check the header: make
ffconcat version 1.0the exact first line, without leading whitespace or a byte-order mark. - Check paths and quotes: verify each file exists and that paths with spaces or special characters follow concat syntax.
- Check safe-path restrictions: the default safe mode rejects some paths and directives. Prefer simple, safe paths rather than turning off the check without understanding the consequences.
Playback breaks at a file boundary
- Compare the files’ streams, codecs, and time bases; the concat demuxer requires compatible inputs.
- Look for inaccurate file durations, truncation, or damaged media. A duration override can help when the reported duration is inaccurate, but should be based on the file’s actual duration.
- Test each transition locally before streaming the playlist.
YouTube does not show a preview or reports poor stream health
- Confirm that the selected stream URL and key are correct and that live streaming is enabled for the channel.
- Check that the output codec, bitrate, frame rate, audio format, and keyframe interval match YouTube’s guidance.
- Test whether the upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate; encoder recommendations do not account for your connection’s available capacity.
- Review Live Control Room messages and stream-health indicators rather than assuming the feed is healthy because FFmpeg is still running.
The stream stops when the computer or connection fails
A local FFmpeg process depends on the computer, power, and network connection staying available. If any of those fail, the feed can stop. For a stream that must continue while your computer is off, use a cloud-hosted approach instead.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist streaming to YouTube from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start your free day.
