For a YouTube Live stream built from animated video files, encode a steady feed with FFmpeg using a supported video codec, a bitrate YouTube recommends for your output resolution and frame rate, and keyframes about every two seconds. A practical starting profile for SDR 1080p at 30 fps is H.264 through libx264, 10 Mbps video, a 60-frame GOP, and—if your animation has audio—AAC stereo at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. This is a live encoder workflow, not a normal uploaded YouTube playlist: only the former sends a live feed to YouTube.
First, choose the right kind of playlist
A standard YouTube playlist is a collection of uploaded videos; it does not need FFmpeg to send an RTMPS live feed. This guide covers a different setup: FFmpeg reads local animated video and sends a continuous encoder feed to YouTube Live. The files’ order, transitions, looping, and recovery after a local process stops depend on how you construct and supervise that feed.

YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 over RTMP or RTMPS, and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. The example below uses H.264 because FFmpeg’s libx264 wrapper encodes H.264, subject to how FFmpeg was built. Check the FFmpeg codecs documentation for the wrapper and build requirements, and confirm the chosen protocol and codec are available in your FFmpeg installation and YouTube account.
Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate
YouTube’s H.264 recommendations give you a starting bitrate target—not a promise of image quality. Pick the output that suits the animation’s detail and motion and that your upload connection can sustain steadily. YouTube’s figures below are live-ingest guidance, accessed October 3, 2026.

| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps | When lower bandwidth is more important than preserving fine detail at 1080p. |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | A practical baseline for detailed animation at 30 fps when the connection is stable. |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | When smoother motion matters but 1080p60 is not practical. |
| 1080p60 | 14 Mbps | When motion benefits from 60 fps and both encoding and upload capacity can support it. |
Animation is not automatically cheap to encode: thin linework, fast movement, noise, and fades can all affect compression. There is no animation-specific bitrate benchmark established here, so do not reduce the target on the assumption that every animated source compresses easily. Keep the source aspect ratio unless you intentionally add a crop or pad step.
Set keyframes and rate control
YouTube Help states: “Keyframe frequency: Recommended 2 seconds Do not exceed 4 seconds”. At a fixed 30 fps output, FFmpeg’s -g 60 sets a maximum GOP size of 60 frames, or about two seconds. At 60 fps, use -g 120 for the same interval. Recalculate for any other frame rate. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
YouTube lists constant bitrate (CBR) for live encoding. In the example, -b:v sets the target, while -maxrate and -bufsize constrain rate variation around it. These are a starting configuration, not proof that a particular input or connection will produce a healthy stream. Verify the feed in YouTube Live Control Room.

Use this FFmpeg starting command for one looping file
Set RTMPS_URL and STREAM_KEY from your YouTube Live setup, then run:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "input.mp4"
-c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30
-b:v 10M -maxrate 10M -bufsize 20M -g 60
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "$RTMPS_URL/$STREAM_KEY"
This example assumes an SDR 1080p30 output, an FFmpeg build with libx264, and an input containing audio. It loops one file; it does not implement a multi-file playlist or transitions. The -re option reads the input at its native rate rather than sending it as fast as possible. Adapt the output resolution and bitrate together to the profile you choose. YouTube’s advanced SDR recommendations also include square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 color, and 8-bit depth; check that your source and output conform when those details matter.
If the animation is silent
Do not create an audio stream just to satisfy the example. Remove the audio options if your output is video-only and your selected ingest workflow accepts that. If you are adding a soundtrack, map and encode the intended audio explicitly; YouTube recommends stereo AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz.

If your playlist has multiple files
The command above only loops one input. A multi-file playlist, gapless handoff, or transition requires a suitable playlist or concat construction and compatible media properties. The exact method depends on your file set and FFmpeg build; do not assume that replacing input.mp4 with several filenames creates a seamless loop. Validate ordering, handoffs, and loop behavior before using the feed continuously.
Configure YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and retrieve its stream URL and stream key. YouTube explains these fields in Manage live stream settings.
- Use the RTMPS URL and key where RTMPS is supported by your FFmpeg build and stream configuration. Treat the key like a password: keep it out of public scripts, screenshots, logs, and source repositories.
- Start FFmpeg and confirm that it reaches real time rather than falling behind. Check YouTube’s stream-health indicators and preview before sending viewers to the stream.
- Test representative scenes—including fast motion, fine linework, fades, and the audio you intend to use—before relying on the profile for a continuous broadcast.
YouTube’s live setup and encoding guidance are documented in its encoder settings page and stream settings guide. YouTube’s broader copyright and monetization rules still apply to live content: having a file or playlist does not by itself establish permission to broadcast its animation, music, or other material. Confirm that you have the necessary rights and follow YouTube’s applicable policies.
Choose between a local encoder and other codecs
Local FFmpeg with H.264
A local encoder gives you direct control over the command and playlist construction, but the computer must encode continuously and the internet connection must maintain the upload rate. The required compute depends on the source, output resolution, frame rate, encoder preset, and runtime; no single CPU or GPU requirement can be inferred without those details. FFmpeg’s x264 preset trades encoding speed against compression efficiency, so test the actual workload and confirm it sustains real time.

HEVC or AV1
YouTube lists H.265/HEVC and AV1 as live ingest codecs alongside H.264. They are options only if your FFmpeg build can encode the selected codec and your particular YouTube stream configuration accepts it. Codec support alone does not establish equal compatibility or encoding cost; check the build and test the actual feed before switching from the familiar H.264 profile.
RTMPS or another supported protocol
YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS. Prefer the encrypted option when the installed FFmpeg build and account configuration support it. Confirm the URL format and protocol support rather than assuming every FFmpeg build handles the same setup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTroubleshoot the common failure points
- YouTube receives no feed: Check that the stream is started in Live Control Room, the stream URL and key are correct, and the chosen RTMP/RTMPS protocol is supported by the installed build. Replace a compromised key.
- The feed is unstable or YouTube reports poor stream health: Confirm that the upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate. Try a lower resolution and its corresponding recommended bitrate, then test again while monitoring stream health.
- FFmpeg falls behind real time: The selected encode settings may exceed the machine’s capacity for this source. Test a faster x264 preset or a lower output resolution/frame rate and verify sustained real-time processing; there is no universal hardware threshold.
- Video appears stretched or cropped: Check output dimensions and aspect ratio. Preserve the source ratio unless you deliberately configure padding or cropping.
- Audio is missing or unexpectedly present: Confirm whether the input has an audio stream and adjust the audio options or mapping accordingly. Silent content does not inherently need an audio stream.
- Files do not hand off cleanly or the loop stops: The single-file loop command does not solve multi-file playlist construction, transitions, or process supervision. Use a construction compatible with the files and your FFmpeg build, and test the complete playlist and recovery plan before going live.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that stays live from uploaded animated videos, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so a home computer and connection do not have to stay on.
