Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To loop vertical children’s stories on YouTube Live, compose a portrait video scene, loop one file or a playlist in OBS Studio, and send it to YouTube through Live Control Room. Before broadcasting, confirm you have rights to every story element, set the audience accurately, and test the portrait layout and audio. A loop can repeat media, but it cannot guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast: the encoder, internet connection, or YouTube session can still stop.
What you need before you start
- A verified YouTube channel that is eligible to livestream. YouTube’s current guidance, accessed in 2026, says creators must be at least 16 and channels must not have a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days.
- OBS Studio installed on a computer that can stay on and connected for the intended broadcast. For an OBS VLC Video source, VLC must also be installed.
- One story video or a playlist of story videos, with rights cleared for livestreaming and any replay you intend to keep.
- A YouTube stream key from Live Control Room. Treat it as a password: do not publish it or show it in a screen recording.
Check your channel’s livestream eligibility and current encoder options in YouTube Studio before preparing a long-running setup. Platform settings and requirements can change.

Prepare the stories and clear the rights
Use video you are permitted to broadcast
Buying a picture book does not give you permission to livestream its text or illustrations. Clear the rights for story text, artwork, animation, narration, music, and recordings. Check that permission covers livestreaming, the territories where you plan to make the stream available, and a saved replay if you will keep one. If permission is unclear, use original or expressly licensed material and seek jurisdiction-specific advice rather than assuming a purchase or download permits broadcast.
YouTube’s livestream terms say live content must comply with its Community Guidelines and that providers need the rights required to use the material on Google services. YouTube scans livestreams for third-party content. A match can replace the stream with a placeholder, trigger a warning, interrupt the feed, or terminate it. Even licensed material may need the rights owner to allowlist your channel through Content ID.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Make the files ready to play
Use finished video files with their intended narration and music mixed in. For a playlist, decide the order and make sure each file is suitable to follow the previous one; OBS will play the files in the source’s playlist order. Watch the start and end of every story so you know whether there are abrupt cuts, silent gaps, or material you do not want repeated. A loop repeats the media; it does not edit or repair it.
Build a portrait scene in OBS
Choose portrait-only or YouTube’s dual output
A portrait-native scene is the safer choice when the story’s text, faces, or illustrations depend on the full vertical frame. YouTube’s Live Control Room supports horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 output for eligible encoder streams. Its dual-stream vertical output is described as a center crop of the horizontal picture, although other vertical layout options may be available. A center crop can cut off captions, characters, or important parts of an illustration.
Set up and inspect the layout before the broadcast starts: YouTube says the dual-stream setting cannot be added after a stream has begun. Check the current Live Control Room choices, then preview the vertical result on a phone-sized display. If a crop loses essential story information, use portrait-composed artwork rather than relying on that crop.

Arrange the scene for phone viewing
- In OBS, create a scene for the story stream and add the video source or sources.
- Set up the canvas and output to match the portrait layout you intend to send. YouTube’s format labels are 9:16 vertical and 16:9 horizontal; no single required pixel resolution for every setup is established.
- Position and scale the story image so text, faces, and key illustrations are readable within the portrait frame. Avoid placing essential details at the edges where a crop or player interface might obscure them.
- Preview the scene at the size people are likely to watch. Check that the video fills the intended frame without stretching, that text is legible, and that the soundtrack is audible without clipping.
Do not assume one scene composition works equally well on a phone, desktop, and television. Vertical is designed for portrait viewing and mobile discovery; horizontal is generally a more natural fit for wide screens.
Set up looping in OBS
Loop a single story video
- In the OBS scene, use Sources to add a Media Source and choose the story video file.
- In the Media Source properties, enable Loop.
- Confirm the source is visible in the scene and that its audio is enabled if the file contains narration or music.
- Preview the end of the file and the transition back to the beginning. Confirm that playback actually restarts and does not leave the scene blank.
Loop several stories
- Install VLC if it is not already installed; OBS’s VLC Video source depends on it.
- Add a VLC Video source in the scene and add the story files to its playlist in the order you want them played.
- Enable Loop Playlist.
- Preview a transition between files and the final file returning to the first. Check both video and audio at the transitions.
OBS documents support for common video and audio files, but a source that appears in the scene is not proof that the full playlist will play correctly. Test the exact files and sequence before going live.
Connect OBS to YouTube and start the stream
- Open YouTube Studio and enter Live Control Room. Choose the encoder workflow and create or open the livestream you intend to use.
- Copy the stream key from YouTube into OBS’s stream settings. Keep the key private. If you replace or reset it in YouTube, update OBS with the new key before reconnecting.
- Review the current stream settings in Live Control Room and OBS. YouTube’s encoder guidance and the available settings are the reference for your channel and stream; no universal bitrate, resolution, or keyframe interval is established here, so do not treat an invented preset as a platform requirement.
- Start the OBS preview or encoder feed and wait for YouTube to show that it is receiving the stream. Inspect the Live Control Room preview for the correct portrait composition, moving video, and audible sound.
- Set the audience correctly, check the title and visibility settings, and then start the livestream in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Confirm from the viewer side that the public stream is playing as expected.
Keep the computer, OBS, and internet connection running for the duration of an OBS-based broadcast. A media loop only handles repeat playback. It does not restart OBS after a crash, restore a failed connection, or guarantee that YouTube keeps the session live.

Set the audience accurately for children’s stories
If the material is made for children, designate it as made for kids in YouTube’s audience settings. YouTube identifies stories, songs, characters, activities, and other child-directed subject matter as relevant signals. It says it trusts creators to set the audience accurately and may override a setting in cases of error or abuse. Do not rely on automated classification to make the decision for you.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA made-for-kids designation limits features on the individual stream. YouTube lists comments, live chat, notifications, personalized advertising, channel memberships, and Super Chat among the unavailable features. It also does not automatically place a video in the YouTube Kids app. Account for those limits when planning moderation, audience interaction, and revenue.
What vertical streaming changes for viewers
YouTube’s viewer guidance describes the vertical live feed as available in the YouTube app, but not currently on tablets. Viewers can watch vertical live streams in a full-screen portrait experience and browse other vertical live streams. YouTube’s general livestreaming guidance also says viewers can encounter vertical live streams while browsing Shorts on mobile. Scheduled livestreams and Premieres do not appear in the vertical live feed.

These discovery paths are not a guarantee that every viewer will see the stream in the same place or format. For a children’s story channel, decide whether mobile portrait viewing is the priority, and separately consider how the stream will look on desktop or television. YouTube describes dual output as sharing a URL and chat; verify the current Live Control Room behavior before relying on that arrangement, especially because made-for-kids streams do not have live chat.

There is no 24/7 guarantee from turning on a loop. With OBS, monitor the computer, OBS status, network connection, and YouTube’s Live Control Room. If the stream stops, check whether OBS is still running, whether the media source is playing, whether the internet connection is available, and whether YouTube still shows the encoder feed. Restore the failed component, confirm the preview is healthy, and restart the stream from Live Control Room if needed.

Common problems and fixes
- The stream is horizontal, cropped, or missing important story details: Check the selected output format and the scene composition. For a dual-stream center crop, reposition the important content or use a portrait-native scene. A dual-stream layout cannot be added after the stream has started.
- The media stops at the end: For one file, verify that Loop is enabled on the Media Source. For a playlist, verify Loop Playlist on the VLC Video source and confirm VLC is installed.
- The playlist has a blank or silent transition: Preview each file boundary and verify the files and audio sources are available and enabled. Adjust the files or playlist rather than assuming the loop will smooth over an edit.
- YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: Check the OBS connection, current stream key, and Live Control Room status. If the key was reset, replace the old key in OBS and reconnect.
- YouTube interrupts or replaces the broadcast: Review any warning and identify the matched third-party material. Confirm that the license covers livestreaming and that the rights owner has allowlisted the channel through Content ID when required; do not simply restart with the same disputed material.
- The stream is live but children cannot use chat or comments: Check the audience designation. Those features are among the restrictions YouTube applies to an individual livestream marked made for kids.
- The stream stops during a long run: Check the encoder, media source, network, and YouTube session to find what stopped. OBS looping alone provides no automatic failover or uptime promise.
