Use Playwright to open the page, wait for a page-specific signal that the content you care about is ready, and then save a screenshot. Run that script on a schedule to repeat the capture. The schedule determines when a browser visit starts; the readiness check determines when its screenshot is taken.
Make the screenshot wait for the content you need
A browser’s navigation event does not necessarily mean a JavaScript application has finished updating the part of the page you want to record. After navigation, wait for a meaningful condition: for example, a chart becoming visible, expected text appearing, or a page-specific JavaScript state becoming true.
Playwright’s Page API supports navigation load-state options, locator waits, page-function waits, and screenshots. Replace the example URL and selector below with values that fit the target site; [data-ready="true"] is illustrative, not a universal selector. See the Playwright Page API documentation.
Install Playwright and its browser
In a new project, install Playwright and Chromium:

});The finite 15-second default timeout makes a missing readiness condition fail instead of silently producing a screenshot that could look complete but omit the desired content. Adjust it to suit the page. The error handler reports failure to the process log, and the nonzero exit status lets a scheduler or workflow detect that the run did not complete successfully.

Choose the right wait
- Visible target:
page.locator('selector').waitFor({ state: 'visible' })is useful when the relevant component appears after rendering. - Expected text: wait on a locator matching the text the page should show, when that text is a dependable readiness signal.
- Application state: use
page.waitForFunction(...)when readiness is represented by a specific condition exposed in the page.
Use a signal tied to the actual content you want in the image. A generic event can happen before that content is rendered.
Why not wait blindly for network idle?
Playwright defines networkidle as having no network connections for at least 500 ms, but its documentation marks this state as discouraged for deciding that a page is ready and recommends web assertions instead. Some pages keep connections open; others make later requests after appearing quiet. Network silence therefore does not necessarily mean that the specific chart, listing, or other dynamic content is ready. See the Page API guidance on load states.

If a page has no suitable visible element, identify a reliable application-specific predicate rather than assuming that waiting longer or for a generic load state solves the problem. If the expected condition times out, log the failure and investigate; do not save a misleading partial capture as though it succeeded.
Choose what to capture and keep runs comparable
Viewport or full page
By default, page.screenshot({ path: 'capture.png' }) captures the viewport. Set fullPage: true to capture the full scrollable page. Full-page captures can produce much taller images, so use the viewport when the recurring record is meant to show only what a visitor sees without scrolling.

Keep each run instead of overwriting it
A fixed filename such as capture.png is overwritten on the next run. For an archive, generate a unique name for each execution. For example, change the screenshot line in the script to:

Choose a retention policy as well: recurring images accumulate, and the destination and cleanup process are your responsibility.

Hold rendering conditions steady
For a useful time series, keep the browser version, viewport, device scale, locale, and other relevant settings consistent between runs. Different rendering environments can produce different output; identical settings help make comparisons more meaningful but do not guarantee pixel-identical screenshots.

A scheduler launches the capture script at the desired cadence. It is separate from Playwright’s wait: the cron schedule controls when a run begins, while the locator or condition controls when that run captures the page.

GitHub Actions scheduled workflows use POSIX cron syntax and run in UTC by default. The documented shortest interval is once every five minutes. This example starts daily at 08:17 UTC:

path: captures/Commit the script and its package files to the repository’s default branch. The example uploads the resulting files as a workflow artifact; choose a storage and retention approach appropriate to how long you need the archive. GitHub notes that scheduled events may be delayed during periods of high load, particularly around the start of an hour, so this is not an exact-time guarantee. The minute 17 schedule avoids the top of the hour, but does not guarantee a precise launch. See GitHub’s schedule event documentation.
Run on a machine you control
You can also have a system scheduler launch node capture.js on a machine where Playwright and its browser are installed. Choose the scheduler based on where the browser can run, how the page’s credentials are supplied, where images should be stored, and how you will be notified of failures. The exact setup differs by operating system and hosting environment.
Troubleshoot common failures
- The locator times out: confirm the selector exists on the page, is not inside an unhandled frame, and becomes visible in the state you selected. Check whether a sign-in screen, consent prompt, or changed page layout is blocking the expected content. Update the readiness condition to match the actual page rather than simply increasing the timeout indefinitely.
- The image is blank or incomplete: verify that the readiness signal corresponds to the content in question, not just a surrounding container that appears early. Inspect the page and choose a more specific element or state.
- The browser does not launch: install the Playwright browser binary for the environment running the script. In the workflow above,
npx playwright install --with-deps chromiuminstalls Chromium and its system dependencies. - Every run replaces the previous image: use a unique filename and ensure the output directory exists. In a hosted workflow, also upload or otherwise retain the files before the job ends.
- The scheduled run seems late or absent: confirm the workflow is on the repository’s default branch and that the cron time is interpreted in UTC. GitHub scheduled events can be delayed under high load; do not treat them as precise timers.
- The capture works locally but differs in automation: compare browser version, viewport, device scale, locale, timezone, authentication, and other page inputs. Keep the relevant settings consistent between environments.
