Fix OBS Black Screen When Streaming From an Oracle Cloud VPS

A black OBS preview on an Oracle Cloud VPS usually calls for checking the source and graphical session first. Use this sequence to separate capture, encoding, and connectivity problems.

If OBS shows a black preview and the local recording is black too, first check the scene’s source and the VPS’s graphical display session—not Oracle Cloud networking. If the preview works but the stream does not reach its destination, investigate the output and connection instead. A GPU encoder cannot create desktop pixels when OBS has no usable display to capture.

First, identify which part is failing

OBS captures a source, encodes the resulting frames, and sends the stream to the selected service. Those are separate stages. A black preview usually points to the source or display-capture path; a working preview with connection failures or dropped frames points more strongly to output settings or connectivity. OBS’s Help Portal explains its connection and dropped-frame troubleshooting.

What you see Investigate first What it does not establish
Preview and local recording are black Scene and source visibility, capture method, display session, permissions, and graphics initialization That OCI networking is broken
Preview works, but the remote stream is absent Destination, service status, authentication, outbound connectivity, and OBS logs That source capture is broken
OBS reports dropped frames or an unstable connection Network capacity and stability to the streaming endpoint, and whether the configured bitrate is suitable That the black preview is a network problem
Hardware encoder is unavailable GPU shape, driver, OBS build, and encoder compatibility That source capture is fixed or broken

Work through the black-preview checks

1. Test the local image before changing network rules

  1. In OBS, inspect the preview. Check whether the intended scene is selected and whether its source is present, enabled, and visible.
  2. Make a short local recording, then play it back. If both preview and recording are black, focus on capture and display initialization. If the local recording has video but the remote stream does not, move to the output and connectivity checks below.

OBS’s capture troubleshooting guide covers common source and capture issues: Laptop Troubleshooting New.

2. Verify that the VPS has a display OBS can capture

On a Linux VPS, identify the graphical session that actually exists and check that OBS is running inside the session you intend to capture. Determine whether it is X11 or Wayland, how OBS was launched, and whether a remote desktop or virtual display is active and producing pixels visible to that process. An SSH session by itself does not create a desktop to capture. The correct capture method depends on the Linux distribution, session type, and remote-display setup; there is no single setting that applies to every OCI instance.

OBS’s Linux installation guidance lists OpenGL 3.3 or later and discusses X server prerequisites. If OBS cannot initialize the graphics stack in its session, changing the stream key or opening network ports will not make the local preview appear.

3. Check the graphics stack and any GPU configuration

Confirm OBS starts in the intended graphical session and can initialize the available graphics stack. Do not assume a generic VPS includes a GPU. If you selected an OCI GPU shape, verify that the shape is available to your tenancy, region, and availability domain and that your tenancy has the required service limit or quota. Then check that the driver is installed and compatible with the selected image and GPU.

Oracle’s Compute Shapes documentation describes shape availability and GPU context. Its GPU workstation tutorial is an example configuration, not a universal OBS setup. Oracle’s Platform Images documentation provides image and driver considerations.

4. Treat encoding as a separate stage

Once the source produces a visible image, choose an encoder supported by the actual hardware and installed drivers. OBS documents hardware encoding, including NVENC, in its Hardware Encoding guide. A hardware encoder processes captured frames; selecting one does not provide a desktop, make a virtual display produce pixels, or repair a black source.

If the preview works but the stream fails

Check that OBS is configured for the intended streaming service and destination, that the service is available, and that the stream key or other authentication is current. Review OBS’s connection and dropped-frame guidance before changing OCI rules. A black local preview is not, on its own, evidence that inbound ports or firewall settings are the problem.

When the symptoms do indicate a connectivity issue, Oracle says to consider three layers: network security group rules, subnet security lists, and the operating system firewall. Oracle Linux images may use firewalld. Check the rules that apply to the actual protocol and destination, and avoid opening broad ports speculatively. See OCI’s VCN Troubleshooting guidance.

Review logs and software conflicts

Read the OBS log for errors around source initialization, display or graphics setup, encoder startup, and connection. If a security or firewall product may be interfering, consult OBS’s Known Application Conflicts guidance. Change one setting at a time and retest so you can tell which change affected the symptom.

  • Capture or display initialization error: return to the session, source, and graphics checks.
  • Encoder initialization error: verify the encoder is supported by the installed OBS build, hardware, and driver.
  • Connection or dropped-frame error with a working preview: check destination, authentication, bitrate suitability, and the outbound network path.

Choose an OCI configuration by requirement, not by guess

There is no universally established “best” OCI shape for an OBS black screen. Compare the configuration against the work OBS actually needs to do:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Does the shape provide the GPU you intend to use?
  • Is it available in your region and availability domain, and does your tenancy have the required quota or service limit?
  • Is the chosen operating-system image compatible with the required driver?
  • Does the workload need GPU rendering, hardware encoding, or both?
  • Independently of encoding, is there an active display session that the OBS capture method can see?

OCI’s shape and GPU guidance describes availability and configuration considerations, but it does not benchmark stream quality or recommend a particular shape for OBS. Confirm the current options for your tenancy and region before changing or provisioning an instance.
