What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Neither a Windows PC nor a Linux server is inherently cheaper to run for a 24/7 YouTube looping stream. Measure each complete setup’s average power draw while it runs the same stream, then multiply its energy use by your actual electricity rate. Hardware, encoding workload, peripherals and settings matter more than the operating-system label alone.
How to compare the electricity cost fairly
Compare the machines under the workload you expect to use, not at idle or by comparing a desktop’s power-supply rating with a server’s specifications. YouTube supports encoder-based live streams and publishes recommended settings by resolution and frame rate. Choose the same output settings on both hosts where possible, then let each reach its normal streaming state before measuring.

- Match the stream. Use the same source video, output resolution, frame rate, codec where possible, bitrate, and stream duration. Keep overlays and other processing consistent. Follow YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions for the configuration you intend to stream; its guidance recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Measure the whole setup at the wall. A plug-in electricity meter can measure a single host and its connected equipment. Include the same continuously powered peripherals in both totals, such as a monitor or external storage, if they are part of the streaming setup. Keep the measurement boundary and meter placement consistent. If a UPS sits between the machine and the wall, account for whether the meter reading includes its conversion losses.
- Measure over a representative interval. Let the stream settle, then record energy over enough time to reflect normal fluctuations. A momentary watt reading can miss changes in encoding load or system activity. The U.S. Department of Energy explains that when power fluctuates, energy can be measured over time and divided by the measurement period to determine average power in its standby-power measurement guidance. That supports time averaging; it is not a certification procedure for a continuously encoding stream.
- Repeat separately on each machine. Run the same stream and measurement interval on the Windows PC and Linux server. Record the average watts, duration, included equipment, and electricity tariff so the estimate can be checked or updated later.
Calculate kWh and the energy charge
- Energy (kWh) = average power (W) × hours ÷ 1,000.
- Electricity energy charge = kWh × your electricity price per kWh.
- For continuous operation over a 30-day month, monthly kWh = average watts × 24 × 30 ÷ 1,000, provided the stream really runs for all 720 hours.
For example, if a meter records an average of 100 W for 24 hours, the host uses 2.4 kWh over that day. Multiply 2.4 by the per-kWh rate on your own bill to estimate the energy charge for that day. This is an illustration of the formula, not a claim about typical PC or server consumption.
These calculations estimate the energy component only. Depending on your utility and location, a bill may also include fixed service fees, demand charges, taxes or tiered pricing. Apply those separately rather than treating the energy estimate as the whole bill.

Why the Windows PC and Linux server may differ
Hardware and configuration
CPU, GPU, motherboard, power supply, storage and fans all affect power use. A server is not automatically more efficient than a desktop: the word “server” does not reveal what an individual machine draws under load. A power supply’s printed wattage is its rated capacity, not a measurement of the machine’s actual consumption.
Encoding and video workload
Resolution, frame rate, codec and whether encoding runs in software or on dedicated hardware change the work being done. Moving video, overlays or other processing can also behave differently from a mostly static image. YouTube’s bitrate recommendations describe stream configurations, not the electricity a particular PC or server will consume. Measure the content and output settings you plan to use.

Operating system and power management
Background services, drivers, power profiles and idle behavior can differ between installations. The available sources do not establish a controlled Windows-versus-Linux comparison for a YouTube looping stream, so a measured difference between two machines cannot be assigned to the operating system unless hardware and workload are controlled.

Power-management settings can change computer energy use. The U.S. Department of Energy’s computer purchasing guidance advises using appropriate built-in power management. However, a live stream may prevent sleep; test any changes without interrupting the stream.

Peripherals and the measurement boundary
A display left on, network equipment, external drives and UPS losses can affect the cost of a complete setup. Decide whether you are comparing only the host or the whole arrangement, and include the same categories on both sides. The U.S. Department of Energy’s data-center IT efficiency guidance discusses metering and monitoring and notes that load varies. It is useful for measurement principles, not as evidence of present-day consumer server wattage.

There is no evidence-based universal answer. A particular Linux server may draw less or more than a particular Windows PC, but that result could reflect hardware, firmware, settings, attached equipment or the stream workload. The comparison that matters for your bill is the measured average draw of each complete setup running the same job.

For a fairer operating-system comparison, use the same hardware where practical, or disclose that the machines differ. In either case, keep the stream settings and measurement boundary consistent. Otherwise, report the result as a comparison of those two systems—not proof that Windows or Linux is generally more efficient.
Choose between a local host and a cloud stream
Electricity is only one part of the decision. Consider hardware purchase cost, stream settings and quality, continuity after a failure, monitoring and maintenance effort, and any cloud subscription. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance describes encoder-based streaming and lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 live streaming of pre-recorded videos. That listing does not establish a particular service’s current price, performance or total energy footprint.
For YouTube-only continuous streaming of uploaded videos, StreamNeo is the first cloud option to consider: it runs from the cloud, supports uploaded video at any quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day. It is not a camera-live service and streams to YouTube only.
Or let it run in the cloud
- Upload your recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.
Nothing has to stay on at home. Your video streams as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month.

Common calculation and comparison mistakes
- Using a power-supply rating as consumption: measure actual wall draw or energy over time instead.
- Comparing idle with streaming: measure both machines in their normal streaming state.
- Changing settings between runs: hold source, resolution, frame rate and other stream variables constant where possible.
- Leaving a monitor on for only one system: either include equivalent peripherals in both totals or exclude them from both.
- Using someone else’s electricity rate: use the rate that applies to your account and note any bill components outside the energy charge.
- Calling a system difference an OS result: unless hardware and workload are controlled, the result describes the two complete setups you measured.
- Assuming lower electricity means lower total cost: include hardware, maintenance, continuity needs and any subscription when making the broader decision.
