Encode it to settings YouTube accepts, then send it to the current server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. The command below is a configurable template, not a tested command; check its settings and test the stream before your audience arrives.
Before you start
Your YouTube channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. If this is your first time enabling live streaming, activation can take up to 24 hours. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select a stream to get its server URL and stream key. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder ingest. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains how to obtain these credentials.

- A Windows installation of FFmpeg available from Command Prompt. Confirm that
ffmpegruns and that your build includes thelibx264encoder used in the example. No particular Windows binary distributor or installation method is specified here. - A prerecorded video file accessible at a known path.
- The server URL and stream key for the stream you intend to broadcast. Treat the key as a password; do not share it or publish it.
- A reliable internet connection with upload capacity to sustain the chosen bitrate. YouTube recommends keeping 20% of upload bandwidth free beyond the stream bitrate.
Use this FFmpeg command as a starting template
Replace the input path, server URL and key with your own values. Set the video bitrate and other output settings to match your resolution, frame rate and codec using YouTube’s current encoder settings. The example’s -g 60 corresponds to a two-second keyframe interval only at 30 fps; adjust it for the frame rate you choose.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "C:Videosprerecorded.mp4" -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 6000k -maxrate 6000k -bufsize 12000k -pix_fmt yuv420p -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv "rtmps://SERVER/APP/STREAM_KEY"
The destination in quotation marks is illustrative, not a URL to copy: use the exact current RTMPS server URL and matching stream key supplied in Live Control Room. YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate range at 1080p30 is 5–14 Mbps; other resolutions, frame rates and codecs have their own values in YouTube’s table. The example’s 6000k video bitrate falls within that stated range, but it is not a universal recommendation for other output settings or source files.

What the main options do
-repaces file reading at the input’s native rate instead of letting FFmpeg send it as fast as the computer can process it.-stream_loop -1tells FFmpeg to repeat the input indefinitely. This controls file looping; it does not guarantee an uninterrupted network connection or an always-available YouTube event.-iidentifies the video file. Input options such as-reand-stream_loopbelong before the associated-i.-c:v libx264encodes video as H.264 if that encoder is present in your FFmpeg build;-c:a aacencodes audio as AAC.-b:v,-maxrateand-bufsizeset video rate-control values in this example. Confirm the target bitrate against YouTube’s table for your output combination.-gsets the GOP spacing in frames. At 30 fps, 60 frames is two seconds; at another frame rate, change the value to keep the interval near YouTube’s recommended two seconds. YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.-f flvselects the output container used here for RTMP-family ingest. YouTube recommends RTMPS; use the destination it gives you rather than assuming a URL format.
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, CBR, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval. This command uses H.264 and AAC; it is an example, not a complete configuration for every source or stream.
Set up and start the Windows stream
- Check FFmpeg. Open Command Prompt and run
ffmpeg -version. Then confirm the build includeslibx264; the example will fail if that encoder is unavailable. - Prepare the YouTube destination. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select your stream. Copy its server URL and stream key. If you are not eligible to stream or live streaming is not enabled yet, resolve that first.
- Adapt the template. Replace the file path and destination, including the current server URL and key. Choose the output resolution, frame rate and bitrate to suit the source and YouTube’s current table. Set
-gto approximately two seconds of frames: for example, 60 at 30 fps. Make sure the connection has YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth headroom. - Run FFmpeg and inspect the preview. Paste the completed command into Command Prompt. Watch FFmpeg’s output for errors, then wait for the stream preview in Live Control Room. Test representative picture motion and audio, and monitor stream health before and during the broadcast.
- Start and end the event deliberately. For a scheduled broadcast, use the controls in Live Control Room once the preview is present. To finish, end the event in YouTube when applicable, then stop FFmpeg. YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; its guidance does not establish archive behavior for longer streams.
Make the loop look and sound right
Looping repeats the file, but it does not repair an awkward edit or guarantee a gapless boundary. Play through the end-to-start transition before broadcasting: listen for a silence, click or sudden level change, and look for a black frame or abrupt visual jump. If the boundary is distracting, edit the source or adjust the encode, then test the complete loop in Live Control Room. Confirm the intended audio stream exists; for a silent source, adapt the command rather than assuming AAC audio will be available.

Copying streams without re-encoding may reduce CPU use only when the codecs, timestamps, container behavior and stream parameters are compatible with both YouTube ingest and looping. Compatibility is file-specific, so do not assume copy mode will work reliably for every video. The adaptable example above re-encodes instead.

Troubleshoot common problems
- No preview or connection error: Check that you copied the current server URL and the matching key for this stream. If a third-party encoder cannot start, YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance recommends obtaining a new key in Live Control Room and updating the encoder.
- YouTube rejects the stream or stream health is poor: Compare protocol, codec, CBR, bitrate, resolution, frame rate and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current settings. Check FFmpeg’s output and network capacity; leave 20% of upload bandwidth beyond the stream bitrate.
- Video repeats but audio is absent or wrong: Check that the file has the intended audio stream and that the command’s audio encoder fits the source. Listen to a full loop, including its boundary; seamless audio looping is not guaranteed.
- FFmpeg exits or the stream stops: Read the console for input-file errors, network interruptions or encoder failures.
-stream_loop -1repeats the input but cannot keep a failed connection or YouTube event alive on its own. - The key may have been exposed: Reset it in YouTube Studio using the stream’s settings, then replace the value in your command. YouTube describes stream keys as credentials used by the encoder to connect.

Only stream material you have the right to broadcast. Replaying a video does not change its copyright status, and permission to upload a file does not necessarily mean you have permission to broadcast its music, footage or other included material. Check YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream rules before going live; a claim or restriction can interrupt the event or affect the channel. Keep the stream key private, and reset it if compromised.
For a scheduled stream, verify the preview and use Live Control Room’s controls to begin and end the event. YouTube’s automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours; do not rely on that statement for a longer broadcast.

FFmpeg versus a hardware encoder
For the Windows workflow in this guide, FFmpeg is software: you configure a command and run it on a computer that remains on and connected while it streams. A dedicated hardware encoder is an optional alternative, not a requirement. YouTube lists encoders such as AJA HELO Plus, which has optional prerecorded-media scheduling. Hardware changes the setup interface and adds device purchase and maintenance; whichever route you choose, protect the stream key and confirm that the device or software supports the prerecorded-file playback and scheduling you need.
