Send the encoded output to the current RTMPS server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio. The loop runs on the server, so your desktop can be off; you still need to manage the server process, network, credentials, and YouTube broadcast.
Before you start
Check that the channel can livestream before investigating encoder errors. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified, must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Live content is subject to YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. These requirements and account-specific status can change; confirm them in YouTube Help before going live: Get started with live streaming.

- A Linux server with FFmpeg installed, enough storage for the video, and a stable outbound connection.
- A video file you have the rights to stream, with compatible video and audio tracks.
- A YouTube Studio live stream, its server URL, and its stream key.

- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live. Create or select a stream or scheduled event, and choose an appropriate privacy setting for testing. YouTube’s current encoder walkthrough is Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the current values from Studio rather than an endpoint copied from an old tutorial.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not put it in a public script, screenshot, shared log, or command that will remain in shell history. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s stream-key guidance.
For ordinary encoder streaming, prefer RTMPS when YouTube provides it. RTMPS uses TLS; YouTube’s ingestion guidance specifies a valid server path, protocol rtmps, port 443, and hostname information for server authentication. Follow the endpoint supplied for your stream: Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS.

Prepare and inspect the video on Linux
Transfer the authorized source file to the server, then inspect its streams and media properties before choosing output settings:
ffprobe -hide_banner /path/to/video.mp4Check the reported video codec, dimensions, frame rate, audio codec, and duration. If there is no audio track, omit the audio mapping and audio options in the example below; otherwise FFmpeg may fail when asked to map a nonexistent audio stream. If the file contains multiple tracks, choose the intended ones explicitly rather than assuming the first tracks are correct.

FFmpeg options are scoped: input options belong before the corresponding -i, while output options go after the input. The FFmpeg documentation defines -stream_loop -1 as infinitely looping an input and -re as reading at the native frame rate (equivalent to -readrate 1). Run FFmpeg at the appropriate settings
Use this as a command template, replacing the file path and YouTube URL/key with your own values. The example assumes one video and one audio track, H.264 video, AAC audio, and an RTMPS endpoint. It is not a tested universal command: select the resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and other encoder values for your source using YouTube’s current table.

The single quotes protect shell-special characters in the destination; avoid saving a real key in a script or command history. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers supported codecs, recommended bitrate ranges, resolution and frame-rate choices, keyframes, and RTMPS: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Loop and pace: keep
-stream_loop -1and-rebefore the input’s-i. Do not use low read-rate throttling on a real-time capture or network input; FFmpeg warns that it can cause packet loss. - Video and audio: the example re-encodes to H.264 and AAC. Match the output to YouTube’s current recommendations and your source; do not assume one bitrate or keyframe interval is right for every resolution and frame rate.
- Destination: use the RTMPS server URL and key from the selected YouTube stream. The URL/key pair is an ingest destination, not a permanent address to publish.
Start the feed and take the broadcast live
- Run the command in a terminal session on the server. Check the FFmpeg output for connection or encoder errors and confirm that frames are being processed.
- Return to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and wait for the incoming preview. For a scheduled broadcast, YouTube’s instructions say to wait for the preview and then click Go live. A connected encoder does not necessarily mean the event has been made public.
- While the stream is running, monitor Studio’s preview and stream-health indicators as well as the server process and network connection. YouTube’s operational suggestions are in YouTube live streaming tips.
- Stop FFmpeg when you intend to end the feed, then end the broadcast in Studio as appropriate for the event. A process looping forever and a YouTube broadcast’s lifecycle are separate things.
Keep a remote server running reliably
A remote server means the encoder can continue without a home computer, but it does not by itself guarantee continuous delivery. The practical setup for running FFmpeg after logout, restarting it after a crash, securing firewall access, and retaining useful logs depends on the Linux distribution and hosting provider. Do not treat a terminal session or a running process as an uptime guarantee. Monitor the process, server resources, outbound connectivity, and Studio stream health; test your recovery procedure with a private or unlisted stream before relying on it.

YouTube’s API documentation distinguishes a broadcast (the event/video) from a stream (the inbound feed). Its example describes a channel with a 24/7 feed that also creates a separate interview video. That API resource model is not a guarantee of uninterrupted delivery, archive retention, monetization, or availability for a particular channel: Understanding broadcasts and streams.

Archive and policy limits to plan around
YouTube’s encoder setup help says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume the same archive outcome for a stream lasting 12 hours or more; plan separately for any recording you need to retain. A continuous FFmpeg loop also does not mean YouTube will treat the broadcast as one permanently available video.

Looping a file can raise copyright and reused-content issues even if the stream technically works. Use media you own or are licensed to stream, and review YouTube’s channel policies before making recurring or monetized broadcasts.
Troubleshooting common failures
