Both AWS Lightsail and DigitalOcean can host a VPS that runs an encoder and sends a prerecorded playlist to YouTube Live. Neither is established as the better or more reliable choice for a particular continuous stream: compare the current plan and transfer allowance for your region, the workload your encoding method needs, and how you will monitor and recover the stream. If you would rather not maintain a server, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative that loops uploaded videos to YouTube; it supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with the first day free.
What the VPS does—and what YouTube does
A VPS is the computer you rent to run the streaming software. The software sends a video feed to YouTube Live; YouTube remains the destination where viewers watch. In YouTube’s workflow, you give the encoder the YouTube Live server URL and stream key, then start the encoder. YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming. YouTube’s encoder setup guide covers the connection process.

For a playlist, the VPS needs to access the video files and keep the encoder or streaming stack running. A server can host that process, but renting a VPS by itself does not configure a playlist, guarantee an uninterrupted feed, or make the content eligible for streaming.

The available official information supports the general VPS-to-YouTube workflow and provides a documented DigitalOcean streaming-stack example. It does not establish a controlled comparison, equal performance, or an end-to-end uptime guarantee for either host. Choose based on the plan, workload, setup you can maintain, and recovery approach—not an assumed provider winner.

How to choose a VPS plan for a playlist
Decide whether to encode or pass through
Your workload depends on whether the server must re-encode the video or can send it without re-encoding. Re-encoding adds processing work; the required capacity also depends on the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. No provider-specific benchmark here gives a safe CPU or RAM minimum. Start with a plan you can test against your actual playlist and chosen encoder settings rather than treating nominal vCPU and memory as a guarantee.

Include transfer and region in the comparison
Compare each candidate plan’s monthly price and included transfer for the intended region. A continuous stream sends data out over time, so check how the provider accounts for outbound transfer and what happens if your usage exceeds the allowance. The pricing sources establish that the providers publish plan information, but do not establish one plan as an equivalent match for the other.

A self-managed VPS requires you to install and configure the streaming software, provide access to the playlist files, protect the stream key, and monitor the process. Decide how you will notice a stopped encoder and restart it, and keep a recovery plan for server or network interruptions. These are operating requirements, not an uptime feature established for either provider.

Set up the stream and test it before relying on it
- Enable YouTube Live in advance. YouTube says first-time livestream activation may take up to 24 hours. Do not leave initial activation until the planned launch time. YouTube encoder setup
- Create or select the VPS. Choose the region and plan after comparing current price and included transfer. Install a Linux system and the encoder or streaming stack you intend to operate. DigitalOcean’s SRS Marketplace option is one documented stack; its catalog page records a snapshot generated on 13 March 2024, so do not treat package versions listed there as current without checking.
- Make the playlist available to the server. Put the prerecorded files where your chosen software can read them and configure playback or looping in that software. The provider and YouTube documentation cited here do not supply one universal playlist command or configuration; those details depend on the software and file format you choose.
- Configure YouTube as the destination. In YouTube Live, obtain the stream URL and key, then enter them in the encoder’s corresponding fields. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, commit it to a public script repository, or expose it in logs you share. YouTube’s documented flow is to enter the URL and key in the encoder and start the encoder.
- Start a test stream and check it from YouTube. Confirm that video and audio arrive, the playlist advances or loops as intended, and the stream stays connected. Test the exact resolution, frame rate, codec, and encode/pass-through mode you plan to use. This is the practical way to see whether your chosen plan handles your workload; no provider comparison here substitutes for that test.
- Set up monitoring and recovery. Arrange a way to detect when the encoder or connection stops, and decide how you will restart it and verify that YouTube receives the feed again. Test the recovery process rather than assuming a VPS provider will restore the broadcast automatically.
YouTube limits, rights, and archive behavior
Check eligibility and stream limits
YouTube says livestream content must comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service and that it may remove or restrict streams. Its help page states a simultaneous limit of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key. YouTube’s live streaming guide
You are responsible for having the rights and permissions needed for every video and audio track in the playlist. A VPS, encoder, or continuous loop does not change those obligations; the platform rules do not determine the rights status of a specific playlist.

Do not assume a 24/7 stream becomes one complete archive
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not promise a single complete archive for a stream that runs continuously for longer than 12 hours. If you need a recording, plan a separate recording or archive workflow and verify the result rather than relying on automatic archiving for an indefinite broadcast. YouTube encoder setup
Common problems and what to check
- The stream does not start: Check that live streaming is enabled for the channel, allowing up to 24 hours for first-time activation. Recheck that the encoder has the correct YouTube server URL and current stream key.
- YouTube receives no picture or sound: Confirm that the encoder is reading the intended files and that the test feed contains the expected video and audio. Check the encoder’s own status and logs before changing VPS plans.
- The stream stops or fails to recover: Check whether the encoder process, server, or connection stopped. Use your monitoring and restart procedure, then verify the feed in YouTube; neither provider is established here as guaranteeing uninterrupted end-to-end broadcasting.
- The server struggles with the selected settings: Recheck whether your configuration is re-encoding and test the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate. Compare a suitable plan’s CPU and memory rather than assuming one provider performs better from its nominal specification.
- The stream is restricted or removed: Review YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service, stream limits, and the rights for every item in the playlist. Server troubleshooting cannot resolve a content-policy or permissions problem.
DIY VPS vs a managed cloud option
Choose a VPS if you want to configure and operate the server and encoder yourself, and are prepared to test the workload, monitor it, and handle recovery. DigitalOcean has a documented SRS Marketplace streaming-stack example; Lightsail is also a VPS option, but the evidence here does not establish a provider-specific playlist setup or a winner on performance or reliability.
