How to Loop a Single Video on a YouTube Live Stream Without a Black Screen

Use OBS’s Media Source Loop setting to repeat one video on YouTube Live, then test the picture in OBS and YouTube’s incoming preview before broadcasting.

To loop one prerecorded video in a YouTube live stream, add it to an OBS Media Source and enable Loop in that source’s properties. Keep the source visible in the active scene, check the OBS preview, and test the stream in YouTube Live Control Room before broadcasting publicly. Looping makes OBS restart the file when it ends; it does not guarantee a gap-free picture on every system.

Loop one video in OBS

  1. Select the scene. In OBS, choose or create the scene you intend to send to YouTube.
  2. Add the video. In the Sources dock, select +, choose Media Source, and select the local video file. OBS lists common supported formats including .mp4, .ts, .mov, .flv, .mkv, .avi, .gif and .webm. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.
  3. Enable the loop. Open the Media Source properties and check Loop. OBS documents this option as off by default; when enabled, it replays the file after playback completes. Restart playback when source becomes active is a separate option: it controls whether playback restarts when the source becomes visible in the active scene.
  4. Make the source visible. In the Sources list, confirm the eye icon is on. OBS layers sources in list order: a source above the video can cover it. Fit and position the video in the canvas, then inspect the preview. See OBS’s Sources guide.
  5. Test the end-to-start transition. Let the file play to its end in OBS and watch it restart. Check that the picture and audio behave as intended before using the loop in a public broadcast.
  6. Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, use the stream URL and stream key with your encoder. Keep the key private; if it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain how to connect an encoder.

YouTube’s Repeat/Loop player control is different: it repeats playback for an individual viewer. It does not tell OBS or another encoder to loop the video being broadcast live.

Loop a playlist instead of one file

If you need several videos to play in sequence, OBS’s VLC Video source can play a playlist and has a separate Loop Playlist option. This requires VLC to be installed; OBS says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. For a single file, the regular Media Source’s Loop option is the direct method. The playlist option repeats the playlist rather than just one selected file. Details are in the OBS Media Sources documentation.

Check the stream before going public

  1. Run a test with representative content. YouTube recommends testing with audio and video movement similar to the planned stream.
  2. Check YouTube’s incoming preview. In Live Control Room, verify that YouTube receives the picture before you click Start Streaming.
  3. Use appropriate encoder settings. YouTube’s general encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, recommends CBR, and recommends a two-second keyframe frequency without exceeding four seconds. Choose the bitrate for your codec, resolution and frame rate from YouTube’s current encoder settings; there is no one bitrate that fits every setup.
  4. Monitor the live event. Watch stream health and messages in Live Control Room, as YouTube recommends in its live streaming tips.

Find where the black screen starts

Compare the image at three stages: OBS’s output scene, YouTube Live Control Room’s incoming preview, and the viewer’s watch page. The first stage where the picture disappears narrows down what to inspect; it does not by itself prove a specific cause.

OBS preview is black

  • Confirm the Media Source points to the intended local file and that the file plays.
  • Check that the source is in the scene being sent to YouTube and that its eye icon is enabled.
  • Look for an opaque source higher in the Sources list that could cover the video.
  • Check the source’s position and fit in the canvas.

OBS preview works, but YouTube’s incoming preview is black

  • Confirm that OBS is outputting the scene you inspected, rather than a different scene.
  • Check the stream URL and key currently configured in OBS against the encoder setup in Live Control Room.
  • Read Live Control Room’s messages and stream health. These checks help isolate the issue but do not guarantee a particular diagnosis.

YouTube’s incoming preview works, but viewers see black

Check the actual watch page on another device or network and confirm the stream is still live. The official guidance cited here does not establish one universal fix for this situation; the cause may depend on the viewer’s device or playback setup.

A black gap appears only when the video repeats

Observe the end-to-start transition in OBS before broadcasting. OBS documents that Loop restarts playback after the file completes, but does not promise a frame-perfect transition for every file and computer. If the gap persists, investigate the file and local playback behavior rather than assuming the Loop setting guarantees seamless output.

Consider hardware decoding only when relevant

OBS documents a hardware-decoding option for certain media types when the GPU has a suitable decoder. Trying that option may be relevant to a specific playback issue, but the documentation does not describe it as a general black-screen fix.

Copyright and stream-key checks

  • Use video and audio you have the right to stream. A loop setting does not grant permission to rebroadcast copyrighted material.
  • Keep the YouTube stream key private because it lets an encoder connect to your stream. Reset it in Live Control Room if it is compromised.
  • Check the current YouTube Live Control Room messages and channel requirements for your account. The encoder setup guidance covers connecting an encoder; it does not establish eligibility for every channel or guarantee that a particular video may be broadcast.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded videos without leaving OBS or a computer running at home, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
