To loop a prerecorded lofi video on YouTube Live, add it to an OBS scene as a Media Source, select the local file, and enable Loop in its properties. Then connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio, test the audio and video, and start the broadcast. The loop is configured in OBS; YouTube receives the resulting live feed.
Choose the right OBS source
For one long video, use Media Source. OBS documents its Loop option as replaying the selected file when playback completes. If you want to rotate through several files, use VLC Video instead: it supports playlists and has a Loop Playlist option enabled by default. VLC must be installed, and OBS specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. The source documentation describes repeat behavior, but does not establish that the transition between repetitions is gapless.

| Source | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Media Source | One local video file | Built into OBS; enable Loop to repeat the file when playback completes. |
| VLC Video | A playlist of media files | Provides Loop Playlist; VLC must be installed, with 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. |
OBS lists common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI, TS, FLV, and GIF. If the file does not play, confirm that OBS can read its format and that you selected the intended file in the source properties. OBS Media Sources (January 11, 2022) describes the source options and properties.

- Create or select the scene. In OBS Studio, choose the scene you intend to broadcast. In the Sources dock, click the plus button and select Media Source.
- Name the source and choose the file. In its properties, select the local lofi video. Use a descriptive source name if you expect to manage several scenes or files.
- Enable Loop. Turn on Loop in the Media Source properties. This repeats the file after playback completes.
- Check source activation behavior. Restart playback when source becomes active is a separate property and is on by default. It controls whether playback restarts when the source becomes visible in the current scene; it is not the same setting as Loop.
- Check the scene output. Confirm the video is framed as intended and that its audio is present in the OBS mixer. OBS’s Quick Start Guide (August 25, 2021) covers adding sources, audio setup, and testing.
For a playlist, add a VLC Video source, create or select the playlist, and use Loop Playlist if you want it to repeat. Choose this option only if installing VLC is acceptable for your setup.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Make sure the channel can go live. Enable live streaming for the channel. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Channel verification and restrictions can also affect eligibility; check YouTube’s live-streaming tips for computers if the option is unavailable.
- Create or select an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create a stream for an encoder, or select an existing one.
- Copy the connection details. In YouTube’s stream settings, copy the server URL and stream key, then enter them in OBS’s stream settings. Use the RTMPS server URL when YouTube provides it: YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder connections.
- Keep the key private. A stream key is the credential that lets an encoder send a feed to YouTube. Do not publish or share it. Reset it in YouTube Studio if you believe it has been exposed.
- Preview before starting. Check that YouTube receives the correct scene and that OBS is sending both video and audio. Start the broadcast only after the preview and stream-health indicators look right.
YouTube’s live-stream settings help explains stream URLs and keys, while its encoder-stream instructions cover creating a stream and connecting an encoder.
Choose settings and test the broadcast
There is no single bitrate that suits every resolution, frame rate, and internet connection. Set resolution and bitrate according to the output you want and the upload capacity available to the broadcasting computer. YouTube’s encoder table lists 2–6 Mbps video bitrate for 720p at 30 fps; that is YouTube’s guidance for that particular output, not a universal target. Follow YouTube’s current table for your chosen resolution and frame rate, and leave enough upload headroom for a stable connection.

Before a long session, test with representative video and audio. Watch OBS’s output and YouTube’s stream health, and confirm that the sound is neither missing nor unexpectedly loud. YouTube recommends testing encoder settings and monitoring stream health. Its encoder settings and bitrate guidance covers recommended protocols and settings.

- Video: Verify that the intended scene is visible and the file plays in the expected aspect ratio.
- Audio: Check that the lofi audio reaches YouTube and that OBS’s audio meters respond during playback.
- Connection: Check YouTube’s stream-health feedback during the test; a successful local preview alone does not confirm that YouTube is receiving a stable feed.
Clear the rights to the music and visuals
Before streaming, make sure you have the rights needed for both the music and the video imagery. YouTube’s Livestream terms and conditions place responsibility on the provider to have necessary rights for worldwide exploitation of live content, expressly including music licensing rights. Live content must also comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and applicable laws.

A “lofi” label or a “royalty-free” claim does not by itself establish that you have the rights required to stream or archive a track. Confirm the license covers your intended use and territory, and keep records of permissions or license terms. Use visuals you are authorized to broadcast as well.
Know what happens to the YouTube archive
YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish reliable archive behavior for a stream longer than 12 hours. If a saved copy matters, check YouTube’s current guidance and keep an appropriate local recording rather than relying on a long live stream as your only copy.

Troubleshoot common problems
- The video plays once and stops: Reopen the Media Source properties and confirm Loop is enabled. For a playlist, check Loop Playlist in the VLC Video source.
- The source restarts unexpectedly: Check whether the source became active again and review Restart playback when source becomes active. That option controls restart-on-visibility; Loop controls repetition after playback completes.
- YouTube does not receive the feed: Check that OBS has the correct YouTube server URL and stream key, and that the channel is eligible to stream. If the key may be compromised, reset it and update OBS.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: Review the selected resolution and bitrate against available upload capacity. Run another test while monitoring YouTube’s stream-health indicators; do not assume a bitrate listed for one resolution applies to another.
- The picture arrives but the audio does not: Check the OBS audio mixer while the source is playing and verify the source’s audio is included in the broadcast mix. Test the sound in YouTube’s preview before starting a long session.
- The archive is missing or incomplete: YouTube’s cited automatic-archive statement covers streams under 12 hours only. For longer broadcasts, archive behavior is not established by that guidance; use a local recording if you need a dependable copy.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a prerecorded YouTube stream to keep running without leaving a computer on at home, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It is for prerecorded uploads to YouTube, not a camera feed.
