You do not need an expensive camera to look good on YouTube. Start with soft, even light on your face, put the lens near eye level, check the framing and background where you will record, and make sure your voice is clear. A phone and window daylight can be enough to get started.
Set up a spot that works for both picture and sound
Choose a quiet place where you can control the light and reduce interruptions. A room that looks good to your eyes may frame poorly on camera, so set up where you intend to record rather than judging the space from across the room. YouTube recommends considering lighting and sound at each location and planning the camera angle and framing before filming (YouTube filming tips).

- Listen for fans, traffic, appliances, or other steady noise that could compete with your voice.
- Look at what the camera will include behind you. Move distracting items or choose a simpler angle if needed.
- Make a short test photo or video from the exact recording position, then review the image on a screen before committing to a take.
Light your face softly and evenly
Lighting often makes a bigger visible difference than changing cameras. Face a window for a free starting setup, or use a soft, diffused light in front of you. YouTube recommends soft lights and describes a two-point arrangement—a key light and a fill light—as one option; for a close-up, a single soft light can work well (YouTube video equipment tips).
Use daylight or one soft light first
Place yourself so window daylight falls across your face rather than coming from directly behind you. A bright window behind a subject can leave the face dark or silhouetted, a concern also noted in Elgato’s video setup guidance. If the window is too bright or changes during the day, use a diffused continuous video light or softbox instead. These are optional tools, not prerequisites.

Add fill only if one side is too dark
In a two-light setup, the key light provides the main illumination and the fill light softens the shadows on the other side. Keep the result natural and even; the goal is a clearly visible face, not a complicated studio arrangement. If you have no second light, try moving closer to a window or using a pale surface nearby to bounce some light back.
Put the camera at eye level and check the frame
Position the lens around eye level. The University of Sussex recommends eye-level placement for self-shot video (Sussex self-shot video guidance). A stand can help, but books or another stable support may work. Make sure the device cannot wobble or slip.

- Set the phone or camera where you will record and place the lens near eye height.
- Take a test image or brief clip from your actual seat or standing position.
- Review the angle and framing: check that your face is clearly visible, the background is intentional, and the shot includes the amount of space you want around you.
- Check exposure and focus on the test image. If your face looks too dark, adjust your position or light before recording.
- Make a short practice take, watch it back, and change one issue at a time. For example, adjust the camera height first, then retest the light.

Make sure viewers can hear you
Clear sound is part of a good-looking-on-camera setup: viewers should not have to strain to understand what you say. Record a short audio check and listen back with headphones before filming the full video.

If you are using the built-in microphone
YouTube’s equipment guidance says you may need to stay three to four feet from the camera for the best audio when using its onboard microphone. Treat that as a practical starting point, not a guarantee: the result depends on the device and room. If you need to sit farther away, test whether your voice remains clear.
If you need an external microphone
A directional shotgun microphone can suit a setup where the microphone points toward you, while a wireless lavalier can keep the microphone close to your voice as you move. Compatibility varies by phone and camera, so confirm that your device has the required external-microphone input or that the microphone supports your connection before buying. YouTube specifically advises checking for a microphone port (YouTube video equipment tips).

Choose a camera you can use reliably
A phone is a reasonable place to start. YouTube characterizes point-and-shoot cameras as simple all-in-one options, while DSLRs can offer a more cinematic look but may be heavier, more expensive, and harder to focus and operate (YouTube video equipment tips). No camera category is automatically best for every creator.
