To automate a pre-recorded playlist in OBS, install VLC, add a VLC Video source, arrange your files, and enable Loop Playlist if you want them to repeat. Then create or schedule a YouTube Live event, put its stream URL and key into OBS, and start the encoder. For 4K/60, YouTube’s English guidance lists 14–50 Mbps for H.264 or 10–35 Mbps for AV1/H.265, recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, and requires normal latency at 4K. Playlist playback and YouTube event start/stop are separate controls.
What OBS automates—and what it does not
OBS can play a local playlist in sequence and repeat it. YouTube Live handles the broadcast event, while OBS sends the encoded video and audio to that event. Setting up the playlist does not by itself schedule a YouTube event or guarantee that the event starts and stops at particular times.

You can enable YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings so encoder start and stop control the live event. These settings are separate from playlist looping; test them with a private or unlisted event before relying on an unattended broadcast. See YouTube’s live stream settings.

Check your media
Keep the files accessible on the computer that will run OBS, and check that each plays correctly, including its audio. OBS’s standard Media Source documentation lists formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, WebM, MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. VLC Video uses VLC libraries for extended media support. Install a matching VLC version
The VLC Video source appears in OBS only when VLC is installed. OBS specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. After installation, reopen OBS and check the Sources add menu for VLC Video.
2. Build and test the OBS playlist
- Open the scene you want to use in OBS. In Sources, select + and choose VLC Video.
- Name the source, then add the local media files to its playlist in the order you want them to play.
- Leave Shuffle Playlist off for predictable sequencing. Enable Loop Playlist if the files should start again from the beginning after the last item.
- Review the source’s visibility behavior. Depending on its setting, hiding the scene may stop, pause, or allow playback to continue. Switch scenes during a test to confirm it behaves as intended.
- Play the scene and check the transitions, picture, and audio. Confirm the final playlist item moves to the beginning only when looping is enabled.
OBS’s media source guide documents VLC Video playlist controls. Playlist order and looping determine what OBS plays; they do not control when YouTube creates or ends a live event.

3. Create the YouTube Live event and connect OBS
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the event. Confirm that live streaming is enabled for the channel.
- Allow time for first-time activation: YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- Copy the event’s stream URL and stream key from YouTube into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in a recording or share it. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube and update OBS.
- Choose whether to enable YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop options. These let encoder start and stop control the event when enabled; verify the account’s current settings using a private or unlisted test before scheduling unattended use.
- Start the OBS stream and confirm the event receives a picture and sound in Live Control Room before making it public.
4. Set OBS output for 4K at 60fps
Use 3840×2160 output at 60fps only if the computer’s selected encoder and the actual upload connection can sustain it. YouTube’s English encoder guidance gives these ranges for 4K/2160p at 60fps:

These are YouTube’s published guidance, not a guarantee that an individual connection—whether in India or elsewhere—will sustain the stream. YouTube’s English page does not state a publication year, and localized YouTube guidance may show different tables. Check the encoder guidance available to your account, and test the actual connection at the intended time and bitrate. The figures are from YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.

Encoder settings that matter
- Rate control: use CBR, as YouTube recommends.
- Keyframe interval: set two seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Codec: choose H.264, AV1, or H.265 only if your encoder supports it. The published bitrate range differs by codec; the lower AV1/H.265 figures are not a reason to select a codec your computer cannot encode reliably.
- Resolution and frame rate: select 3840×2160 and 60fps only when both the encoder and sustained upload capacity can handle them.
- Audio and motion: test representative sections of the playlist, not just a static opening frame. Watch stream health and listen for gaps, clipping, or missing audio.
5. Account for 4K latency and archive behavior
YouTube does not offer low- or ultra-low-latency optimization for 4K. Its encoder guidance says 4K/2160 streams are optimized for quality at normal latency. If near-real-time audience interaction matters more than 4K resolution, consider a lower output resolution. Details are in YouTube’s latency guidance.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that a longer continuous stream will be archived in the same way; check the current YouTube guidance and decide how you will preserve any recording you need.

6. India-specific checks before going live
The playlist procedure and the cited YouTube bitrate guidance do not establish a separate India-specific setting. Your results depend on the computer, encoder, account configuration, and upload connection you actually use. Test at the intended time, leave capacity for connection variation, and confirm the channel can go live. Also make sure you have the rights needed for the video and audio you broadcast; a playlist that works technically may still be subject to YouTube’s copyright rules and channel monetization policies.
Troubleshooting a playlist or 4K stream
- VLC Video is missing: install VLC, confirm its architecture matches OBS (64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC), then reopen OBS.
- Files play in the wrong order: review the VLC Video playlist ordering and make sure Shuffle Playlist is off.
- The playlist stops at the end: enable Loop Playlist if it should repeat.
- Playback stops or pauses after a scene change: check the source’s visibility behavior and test the scene transitions.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: verify the event’s stream URL and key in OBS, confirm the channel is enabled for live streaming, and check the Live Control Room. First-time live activation may take up to 24 hours.
- 4K/60 drops frames or stream health degrades: compare your actual sustained upload with the applicable YouTube range, test representative motion, and confirm the encoder supports the chosen codec. If the system cannot sustain 4K/60, lower resolution or frame rate rather than relying on an unstable output.
- Audience interaction feels delayed: that is expected to be a trade-off with 4K, for which YouTube uses normal latency rather than low or ultra-low latency.
- The event does not start or stop with OBS: check YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings and validate them with a private or unlisted event.
