To secure a device, set a passcode or sign-in method, lock it whenever you step away, and require authentication after it sleeps. Then check what notifications and features remain visible on the lock screen. The menu names below apply broadly to Windows 10 and 11, Android, iPhone and iPad, and Mac; they can vary by device and software version. If a path differs, search Settings for “lock,” “screen lock,” or “sign-in.”
What makes a screen lock useful?
A lock screen protects your information only if returning to the device requires authentication. Microsoft’s device-security guidance puts it plainly: “Just as you probably lock the door to your home or car when you leave, your devices should have to be unlocked to be accessed too.” Choose a PIN, password, pattern, or supported biometric sign-in, and make sure authentication is required after sleep or when the device locks.

There are three parts to the setup: establish an unlock method, lock the device when you leave it, and set an automatic lock for times you forget. A fourth check—what remains accessible while locked—helps balance privacy with convenience.

Lock your device immediately
Windows 10 and Windows 11
Press Windows key + L to lock Windows. You can also open Start, select the user or account control, and choose Lock. Microsoft documents both methods in its Windows device-security guidance.

Android phones and tablets
Press the device’s power button to turn off the display and let its configured screen-lock behavior take effect. Button behavior and timing can vary by manufacturer; verify that waking the device asks for your chosen PIN, pattern, or password.
iPhone and iPad
Press the side button on an iPhone or the top button on an iPad to lock the device. Confirm that a passcode is enabled so access after locking requires authentication.

Mac
Use the Apple menu’s Lock Screen command or the keyboard shortcut Control + Command + Q to lock a Mac. A login password should be required to return to the desktop.
Set authentication and automatic locking
Windows: require sign-in after sleep
- Open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
- Find Require sign-in and set Windows to require sign-in when the device wakes from sleep.
- Under sign-in methods, choose an available option. Windows Hello may offer face recognition, fingerprint, or a PIN, depending on the computer. Microsoft describes these options in its Windows sign-in options guidance.
Windows also offers Dynamic lock, which can lock a PC when a paired phone moves out of Bluetooth range. Microsoft says this may happen within about a minute of the phone leaving range. It is a convenience backup, not a replacement for pressing Windows key + L when you leave: Bluetooth proximity and timing do not guarantee an immediate lock.

Android: choose a screen lock
- Open Settings > Security > Screen lock.
- Select a PIN, pattern, or password and follow the prompts. On some devices, the setting is under a different menu or has a different name; if Security is missing, consult the manufacturer’s help.
- Set a PIN of six digits or more if you choose a PIN. Google recommends this length for added security and notes that longer PINs tend to be more secure. Google describes a strong password as the most secure of the listed screen-lock choices.
- Consider leaving Auto-confirm unlock off: Google warns that enabling it may decrease security.
Google’s Android screen-lock instructions also state that disabling the screen lock provides no protection.
iPhone and iPad: turn on a passcode
- Open Settings > Face ID & Passcode or Touch ID & Passcode, depending on the model.
- Tap the option to turn the passcode on and follow the setup prompts.
- Choose a passcode that is difficult to guess and that you can reliably enter. Face ID or Touch ID may be available for convenient unlocking, but the device passcode remains important for security-sensitive actions, including after a restart and when changing passcode settings.
The device passcode is not the same as the Apple Account password. Apple explains passcode setup in its iPhone and iPad passcode guidance.

Mac: require a login password
Use a strong login password for the Mac, then configure the Mac to require it immediately after sleep or when the screen saver begins. Apple’s Lock Screen settings guidance places the timing controls in System Settings > Lock Screen. The exact controls may differ by macOS version.
Choose settings for your privacy and routine
The right configuration depends on how you use the device and what it could reveal if someone else can see or handle it. These are practical trade-offs, not a tested ranking of one platform or setting against another.

- Resistance to guessing: A longer, less predictable credential is harder to guess than a short or obvious one. Google specifically recommends a six-digit-or-longer PIN and identifies a strong password as its most secure listed Android screen-lock choice.
- Convenience and accessibility: Biometrics can make unlocking easier when the device supports them. Consider whether the method is practical for you, and keep a passcode or password available as required by the device.
- Time before automatic lock: A shorter delay reduces the time an unattended, awake device remains accessible; a longer delay means fewer interruptions. Choose a delay that fits your routine, then lock manually whenever you leave.
- What appears while locked: Notifications, widgets, and quick-access features can expose information or allow actions without unlocking. Review the options on each device rather than assuming the lock screen hides everything.
Limit what people can see on a locked screen
iPhone and iPad
Open Settings > Face ID & Passcode or Touch ID & Passcode and review Allow Access When Locked. Features such as Control Center and widgets may reveal personal information while the device is locked. Disabling access to a feature can reduce that exposure, but it also removes that shortcut for you. Apple details the available choices in its passcode and locked-device guidance.
Other devices
Review lock-screen notification and widget settings on Windows, Android, and Mac as well. Labels and available controls vary by manufacturer and software version. If sensitive message previews or other details appear, look for notification privacy settings and choose whether to hide their contents while locked.
