A missing text-message option usually points to a setting, connection, SIM or plan issue—or to a feature your carrier does not support. First identify which option is missing (SMS fallback, group messaging, MMS, RCS or iMessage), then follow the checks for your device. A missing control alone does not mean the phone is broken.
First identify what is missing
“Text message” can mean several services that use different connections and settings. On iPhone, iMessage uses Wi-Fi or mobile data; SMS requires a mobile network connection, though SMS over Wi-Fi may work when Wi-Fi Calling is enabled, according to Apple’s messaging troubleshooting guidance. On Android, Google Messages may use SMS, MMS or RCS, depending on the feature and carrier.

- Which control is missing? Note its exact label. It might be “Send as Text Message,” a group-messaging control, or an RCS setting.
- What fails? Does sending fail for every recipient, only one contact, or only group messages? If it is one recipient, verify their phone number or email address.
- What changed? Consider a recent device or platform switch, carrier change, or app or operating-system update.
These distinctions matter: a carrier can support ordinary SMS while a particular messaging feature is unavailable.

Check the connection and recipient
Confirm you have the connection required for the message type. SMS needs mobile network service; Wi-Fi Calling may allow SMS over Wi-Fi. For iMessage, check Wi-Fi or mobile data. If messages fail only with one person, check that you are using the correct phone number or email address.

Look for the SMS fallback setting
On current iOS versions, open Settings > Apps > Messages and look for “Send as Text Message.” The path and available controls can vary by operating-system version. If the option is absent, or Group Messaging is missing, Apple says the network provider might not support that feature. Ask your carrier whether your account and service support the specific message type or control.
If messages arrive on one Apple device but not another
Check whether your phone number is selected for iMessage sending and receiving on the device that is missing messages. Apple’s troubleshooting steps cover device and recipient checks.

On Android with Google Messages
Check the app, SIM, plan and signal
- Update Google Messages, then make sure it is the default texting app.
- Check that the SIM is properly inserted and that the phone has cellular signal. Turn off airplane mode.
- Verify that your plan or account balance covers messaging.
- Ask your carrier whether it supports the service you are trying to use—SMS, MMS or RCS.
Google’s Google Messages troubleshooting guide recommends these checks. If SMS works but RCS does not, the issue may be specific to RCS rather than texting generally. If Google Messages indicates that the carrier disabled RCS, contact the carrier; Google’s RCS activation guidance also recommends checking default-app and connectivity settings.
If you recently switched from iPhone to Android
Deactivate iMessage for your phone number after moving to Android. Messages may otherwise continue to be routed through iMessage instead of reaching the new device as expected. Google includes this step in its Android messaging troubleshooting guidance.

When to contact your carrier
Contact the carrier when a control or service is unavailable after the device and connection checks, when the app reports that the carrier disabled RCS, or when you need to confirm whether your plan supports SMS, MMS, group messaging or another feature. Ask about the exact message type and control—not just whether “texting” is enabled—because support can differ by feature and account.
A failed send does not, by itself, establish a hardware fault. Apple’s developer documentation describes message-sending capability as dependent on messaging support and device configuration. Check configuration and service availability before considering device replacement.
