To lock a Samsung Galaxy tablet in portrait or landscape, open Quick settings, hold the tablet in the position you want, then tap Auto rotate. The tile changes to Portrait or Landscape, confirming that the screen is locked in that orientation.
Lock the screen in portrait or landscape
- Swipe down from the top of the display—starting at the top right if that is how your Quick settings opens—to show Quick settings. Swipe sideways across the panel if you do not see the rotation tile on the first page.
- Check the tile’s label. Auto rotate means the screen follows how you hold the tablet. Portrait or Landscape means it is locked in that orientation.
- If the tile says Portrait or Landscape, tap it to switch to Auto rotate. Turn the tablet to the position you want to lock.
- Tap Auto rotate. Confirm that its label changes to Portrait for upright reading or Landscape for a sideways video.
Samsung’s official US instructions say the active Portrait and Landscape lock tiles appear gray, while Auto rotate appears blue or white when enabled. Colors and panel layout can vary by tablet and software version, so use the tile’s label as your main guide.

Unlock rotation or switch to the other orientation
Tap the Portrait or Landscape tile to return to Auto rotate, turn the tablet to the other position, then tap Auto rotate again to lock it there. Leave Auto rotate on when you want the display to follow the tablet’s movement.
What the lock can—and cannot—do in apps
The setting controls whether the display follows the tablet’s physical orientation; it cannot make every app support both positions. Samsung notes that some apps only work in portrait or landscape and stay in that orientation regardless of how the tablet is held. Pause rotation temporarily while turning the tablet
Samsung documents a temporary method: keep Auto rotate on and hold a finger on the screen while turning the tablet. The display stays in its original orientation while you maintain contact; release your finger to allow rotation. Samsung does not establish that this behaves the same on every model or software version.
If Auto rotate is missing or the screen will not turn
- Look through the Quick settings pages. Swipe down and across the panel; the control may be on another page or labeled Auto rotate, Portrait, or Landscape.
- Restore the tile if it was removed. Open Quick settings, tap Edit, add the Auto rotate tile, then tap Done.
- Check the app. Some apps support only one orientation, so the system setting may not change their display.
- Try Samsung’s basic troubleshooting. Check for a software update and restart the tablet. If rotation still fails, Samsung advises checking for physical damage; consult its troubleshooting page.
Samsung tablet-specific notes
Quick settings labels and layout can differ by model and software version. Follow the wording actually shown on your tablet. Samsung’s US guide also says the Home screen rotation option it describes for phones is not available on tablets, so it is not the tablet setting to use for this task.

Samsung’s Global Newsroom described a Good Lock MultiStar feature called “Rotate with our best” for the Galaxy Tab S7 and S7+ running Android 11. That is a dated, model- and software-specific example—not a general fix or a promise that the feature is available on other Galaxy tablets.
