Turn Auto rotate on

Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick settings. Depending on the tablet and software version, you may need to swipe down again to see the full panel.

Find the orientation control. If it is not on the first Quick settings page, swipe left or right through the panel pages.

If the control says Portrait or Landscape, tap it until it reads Auto rotate. When active, the display can follow the tablet’s orientation in apps that support rotation. Samsung’s instructions describe the control and its states; exact placement and icon styling can vary by model and software version, so check the label as well as the color.

Lock the screen in Portrait or Landscape

Hold the tablet in the orientation you want to keep.

Open Quick settings and tap Auto rotate. The control changes to Portrait or Landscape, locking the screen in its current position.

To allow the screen to follow the tablet again, tap the Portrait or Landscape control to switch back to Auto rotate. Samsung’s UK guidance also describes this behavior.

Find or restore the Auto rotate control
If the control is missing, first swipe across the Quick settings pages. If it is not there, Samsung’s US guide says to open Quick settings, tap Edit (the pencil icon), select the Auto rotate icon, and tap Done. The precise appearance of the panel may differ by device or software release.

Why the screen may not rotate
The app may be fixed to one orientation
Auto rotate does not make every app turn. Some apps only open in Portrait or Landscape, even when the tablet is held sideways. Samsung notes this limitation in its screen-rotation guidance.
Check the setting, update software, and restart
Confirm Quick settings reads Auto rotate, then check for available software updates and restart the tablet. These are among Samsung’s recommended troubleshooting steps in its US troubleshooting guide.

Screen damage may require support
If the screen is physically damaged, Samsung advises contacting support, as damage can affect device performance. Do not confuse tablet instructions with the Home screen rotation option mentioned in general phone-and-tablet help: Samsung says that option is not available on tablets.
