Auto rotate lets a Samsung tablet change between portrait and landscape as you turn it. Portrait and Landscape lock the screen in the selected orientation. To lock the tablet where you want it, turn on Auto rotate, hold the tablet upright or sideways, then tap the orientation control again. Some apps and screens support only certain orientations, so they may not follow the setting.
What each orientation setting does

| Portrait | The screen is locked upright and does not change orientation in response to turning the tablet. |
| Landscape | The screen is locked sideways and does not change orientation in response to turning the tablet. |
Samsung describes these as device-level modes, but an app designed for a particular orientation may still open in that mode. The screen can also have its own limits: for example, many screens do not support turning the tablet completely upside down. See Samsung’s screen-rotation instructions.

How to switch modes or lock the current orientation
- Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick settings. Samsung’s current US guidance says to swipe from the top right; the gesture and panel layout can vary by model and software version.
- Find the orientation control. If it says Portrait or Landscape, tap it to switch to Auto rotate. The icon is shown as a device with arrows around it, though its appearance and color can vary.
- Hold the tablet in the orientation you want and wait for the screen to turn.
- Open Quick settings again and tap Auto rotate. The control changes to Portrait or Landscape to show that the current orientation is locked.
- To change the lock or return to automatic rotation, tap the control again and choose the mode you need.
If the orientation control is not visible, Samsung says it may have been removed from Quick settings. Open the panel’s Edit control and add the control back. Exact labels and panel layout can differ by installed software.
Why an app or screen may not rotate
The app does not support the orientation
Auto rotate cannot make an app display in an orientation the app does not support. Some apps open in only portrait or only landscape, regardless of the tablet’s setting. Samsung’s rotation guidance and rotation troubleshooting page both note that app behavior can affect rotation.

The screen does not support that position
Not every screen supports every orientation. If a screen will not rotate upside down, that does not necessarily mean Auto rotate is malfunctioning.
Auto rotate is off
Check Quick settings. If the control reads Portrait or Landscape, the tablet is locked; tap it to enable Auto rotate before turning the device.

What the tablet uses to detect orientation
Samsung says the tablet uses an internal accelerometer to determine how it is being held. That sensor information lets the device match the screen to the tablet’s position when Auto rotate is enabled. More detail is available in Samsung’s screen-rotation troubleshooting guidance.
Try these checks if rotation still does not work
- Confirm that Auto rotate is selected in Quick settings rather than Portrait or Landscape.
- Test another app or screen that supports both portrait and landscape, since an app-specific restriction can look like a device problem.
- Install available software updates, then restart the tablet.
- If rotation still fails, check for physical damage. Samsung lists these as initial troubleshooting steps; persistent problems may require service.
There is also a temporary hold behavior: Samsung says that with Auto rotate enabled, keeping a finger on the screen while turning the tablet temporarily preserves the original orientation. Release your finger to allow rotation. Samsung gives reading a PDF or document as an example.
