First, make sure your channel is verified, has at least 50 subscribers, has no live-streaming restrictions from the past 90 days, and has live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
Check that your channel and phone are eligible
YouTube’s stated requirements for mobile live streaming are a verified channel with at least 50 subscribers and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Live streaming must be enabled, and the phone must run Android 8.0 or later, or iOS 8 or later. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours to become available. Check YouTube’s mobile live-streaming requirements for the current rules.

YouTube says creators must be at least 16 to live stream. Its guidance also says that live streams featuring 13–15-year-olds who are not visibly accompanied by an adult may have live chat disabled, and access to chat or other features may be temporarily restricted. YouTube may limit the number of viewers on mobile streams from channels in this range and set their archived streams to private by default. After a channel reaches 1,000 subscribers, removing the audience limit may take several weeks. Check the archive’s visibility after the stream ends. Start a live stream in the YouTube app
- Open the YouTube app on your phone or tablet and sign in to the channel that will stream.
- Tap Create, then Live.
- Tap Edit to enter the stream details. Set the title and review visibility and audience settings. If you want to broadcast later, schedule the stream here.
- When you are ready to broadcast, tap Go live.
- To end the broadcast, tap Finish. YouTube creates an archive on your channel; you can change its privacy or delete it.
For a scheduled stream, go to Create → Live, tap the calendar, select the scheduled stream, then tap Go live. The mobile flow also includes a screencast option. YouTube documents a private Live Practice mode for rehearsal, but availability may differ by account because the feature is rolling out. See YouTube’s mobile instructions.
Prepare your phone, framing, and connection
- Power: Charge the phone before streaming. YouTube Help estimates that a stream uses 1% of phone battery per minute; this is an estimate, not a guaranteed rate for every device, signal, or stream. YouTube says an external battery pack can be useful for longer broadcasts.
- Interruptions: Turn on Do Not Disturb to reduce interruptions while live.
- Orientation: Choose portrait or landscape before you start, then lock rotation so the picture does not change unexpectedly.
- Internet: Check your connection before going live. A weak or unstable connection can disrupt the broadcast.
- Camera: The front camera lets you see the stream and chat at the same time. YouTube says the rear camera is better for visuals; if you use it, follow chat on another device.
- Lighting: Phone cameras typically need plenty of light. Choose a bright location or arrange lighting before you start.
- Screen sharing: YouTube says Android users can stream their phone screen.

Decide whether phone streaming is the right method
Mobile streaming suits quick updates and vlogging. YouTube also supports webcam streaming from a computer and encoder streaming, which can accommodate gameplay, overlays, and equipment such as cameras, microphones, and preamps. If you are new to going live, try a test stream first; an unlisted test can help you check the process before a public broadcast. YouTube says, “You don’t need expensive equipment – what you have at hand will do.” See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
A stand or tripod may help if you need hands-free, stationary framing, but it is optional—not a YouTube requirement. A power bank is also optional, though it can help on a longer mobile stream.

Common problems and fixes
The Live option is missing or unavailable
Check that you are signed into the correct channel, that it is verified, and that it meets YouTube’s subscriber and restriction requirements. If you have just enabled live streaming, allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation. Confirm that your phone’s operating system meets YouTube’s stated minimums.
The stream has few viewers or the archive is private
If the channel has 50–999 subscribers, YouTube may limit mobile stream viewers and make archived streams private by default. Review the archive’s privacy setting after ending the broadcast. Even once a channel reaches 1,000 subscribers, the viewer limit may take several weeks to be removed.

The picture is difficult to see or the phone overheats or runs low on power
Move to a brighter location, set the phone securely, and charge it beforehand. YouTube recommends considering an external battery pack; actual battery use varies, so do not rely on a fixed runtime estimate.

The stream is interrupted
Check the internet connection before broadcasting, reduce avoidable interruptions with Do Not Disturb, and keep the phone powered. If the connection remains unreliable, consider a different streaming setup rather than assuming the mobile app can compensate for a weak connection.
