Confirm YouTube live access before class—mobile streaming has additional subscriber and device requirements.
Choose the right way to stream
YouTube supports live streams from a mobile device, a computer webcam, or an encoder. The best choice depends on your channel’s eligibility, how much of the room the camera can capture, and whether you need additional production controls.

| Method | Best for | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Phone or tablet | A straightforward, single-camera class with a stable mobile setup. | Mobile streaming has extra eligibility requirements, and YouTube may limit mobile audiences and archive visibility for channels below 1,000 subscribers. |
| Computer webcam | A quick computer-based setup without separate production software. | You need a webcam with a wide enough view to show the dance space. Test the framing rather than assuming the camera covers the room. |
| Encoder with camera and microphone | Classes that need overlays, external camera or audio hardware, or more production control. | It takes more setup and testing. Create the stream early, check YouTube’s preview, and verify the viewing experience on another device. |
For teaching movement, place the camera far enough back to keep the instructor’s whole body and the area needed for the steps in frame. That is practical advice for a dance class, not a YouTube platform requirement.

Check channel access before planning the class
General live-stream eligibility
YouTube’s general live-stream requirements include a verified channel, no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and a creator who is at least 16 years old. Confirm that live streaming is available on the channel before announcing a class.

Extra requirements for the YouTube mobile app
To stream from the YouTube mobile app, the channel must have at least 50 subscribers, be verified, have streaming enabled, and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. The phone or tablet must also be supported. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable and check the feature well before class day.
Mobile streams from channels with fewer than 1,000 subscribers may have audience limitations. YouTube also says mobile-stream archives are set to private by default below that threshold. If you use mobile, check the archive’s visibility after the broadcast and change it deliberately if you want a different outcome.

Prepare the camera, sound, and connection
Frame the movement
- Set the phone, webcam, or camera on a stable support; a tripod or floor stand can help keep the shot steady.
- Back the camera away until the instructor’s full body and the movement area fit in the frame.
- Check the view from the position where the class will take place, including movements that extend to the sides or toward the floor.
Make instruction audible over music
Test a short section with both speech and music playing. Listen on a phone or other viewer device, not only through the equipment beside the instructor. The spoken directions should remain intelligible while the music is audible. If the voice is hard to hear, adjust the microphone placement or levels and test again before starting.

Compare the available upload bandwidth with the combined bitrate of the stream. YouTube recommends keeping 20% of upload bandwidth in reserve beyond the stream bitrate. There is no single upload-speed number that fits every class: the needed capacity depends on the bitrate and configuration you choose. Test the connection under the conditions you expect during class, and avoid saturating the upload with other activity.

Set up and test the YouTube stream
- Choose the streaming method. Use the phone or tablet, webcam, or encoder workflow that matches your eligibility and production needs.
- Set up the stream before class. If you are using an encoder, create the event early enough to inspect YouTube’s preview and confirm that the stream or watch page is available.
- Check the stream on a viewer device. Open the preview or watch page on a phone and check that the image, movement, and sound work as expected. YouTube recommends monitoring audio and video and checking the stream from viewer devices.
- Rehearse a real class segment. Move through representative steps while speaking over the music. Confirm that the camera stays framed and that speech can be understood.
- Choose visibility intentionally. Decide whether the stream and its archive should be public, unlisted, or private where those options are available. If streaming from mobile with fewer than 1,000 subscribers, check the archive because it may default to private.
- Start only after the final checks. Confirm the right camera and microphone are active, the upload has headroom, the framing is correct, and the music is cleared for the broadcast.
Clear music rights for the live stream and replay
You are responsible for having the necessary rights to use music in both the live class and its archive. Buying a track or having a general music subscription does not, by itself, establish that you have permission for YouTube livestreaming and replay.
YouTube scans livestreams for third-party content. A stream can be interrupted even when you have a license if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel in Content ID. If you have permission, ask the rights holder whether the permission covers the live broadcast and archived video, and whether they can add your channel to the Content ID allowlist.

YouTube’s livestream terms state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Read the YouTube Terms of Service and the applicable livestream rules before using music in a class.
If you cannot confirm the rights for the live use and archive, choose music for which you can establish those permissions rather than assuming the stream will remain online.

Troubleshoot common class-stream problems
- The mobile app will not let you go live: Check the 50-subscriber requirement, channel verification, supported-device status, streaming activation, and any live restrictions in the previous 90 days. First activation can take up to 24 hours.
- The instructor’s feet or arms leave the frame: Move the camera farther back, adjust its angle, or widen the shot, then check again while performing the largest movements in the routine.
- Viewers cannot understand the instructions: Repeat the speech-and-music test on a viewer device. Adjust microphone position or audio levels so speech is distinct, then rehearse again.
- The stream buffers or drops: Compare the stream’s combined bitrate with available upload bandwidth and retain YouTube’s recommended 20% reserve. Reduce competing upload activity and test again.
- The stream is interrupted when music plays: YouTube may detect third-party content and interrupt a live stream. Confirm that the rights cover both livestream and archive use, and ask the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting.
- The mobile archive is not public: For channels below 1,000 subscribers, YouTube says mobile archives default to private. Review the archive’s visibility and change it if appropriate.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the class format is a prerecorded dance session rather than a live camera lesson, StreamNeo can keep an uploaded video or playlist looping as a YouTube live stream. Upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; the stream runs in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
Every slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot rather than different quality tiers. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month.
