Cost of Running a 24/7 Ambient Rain Stream: PC vs Cloud

A PC’s 24/7 stream cost starts with measured wall power and your electricity rate. Cloud prices depend on whether you need a YouTube loop host, a VM, or viewer delivery.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A 24/7 rain stream sent from a PC to YouTube can cost only the electricity the computer uses—about $14.96 for a 30-day month at 120 watts and the 2025 U.S. residential average electricity rate. A cloud service may instead charge a fixed hosting fee or bill for video delivery. The cheapest choice depends on measured PC power, your electricity tariff, what the cloud service actually does, and whether you already own the computer.

How much does it cost to run a 24/7 stream?

For a PC, estimate electricity from the computer’s average wall draw, not the wattage printed on its power supply. Use the rate on your electricity bill for a personal estimate:

For a 30-day month, the calculation is watts × 0.72 × the electricity price per kWh. Measure the whole computer at the wall if possible. A plug-in electricity monitor can help; an already-owned PC’s purchase price is not an additional streaming cost, though power use, wear, and any replacement costs still matter.

Illustrative PC electricity costs

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reports a 2025 annual average residential electricity price of 17.30¢ per kWh. At that illustrative rate, these are calculated scenarios—not measurements of typical streaming computers:

Average wall draw Electricity in 30 days Estimated cost at 17.30¢/kWh
60 W 43.2 kWh About $7.47
120 W 86.4 kWh About $14.96
200 W 144 kWh About $24.91

The same EIA data put the 2025 average across all customer types at 13.63¢ per kWh. State averages ranged from 8.20¢ in North Dakota to 35.72¢ in Hawaii. Those national and state figures are context, not a substitute for your current local rate; see the EIA electricity data.

What counts as “cloud” in a PC-versus-cloud comparison?

These options do different jobs, so a price comparison is meaningful only when you compare the same hours, resolution, frame rate, stream count, storage, and reliability expectations.

Cloud model What it does What to include in the comparison
Managed YouTube loop host Hosts uploaded videos or playlists and sends a continuous stream to YouTube. Service fee, stream and storage limits, recovery behavior, and supported output quality.
Rented virtual machine (VM) Runs encoder software in the cloud and sends an ingest stream to YouTube. VM, storage, bandwidth or transfer charges where applicable, setup, monitoring, and recovery. Do not automatically add a separate CDN: YouTube handles viewer playback for a stream sent to YouTube.
Video platform with viewer delivery Processes video and delivers playback to viewers, potentially through an origin and content-delivery network. Encoding, packaging, storage, and audience delivery charges. This is a different workload from sending a source stream to YouTube.

YouTube explains that encoder software can run on a computer to convert source video into a stream, and that YouTube transcodes live input into formats for viewers. That means a local PC can encode and send the rain video to YouTube without you building a separate viewer-delivery system. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.

How much do cloud video charges add up to?

Usage-based video delivery can be inexpensive with few viewing minutes and much more costly as an audience grows. For example, Cloudflare Stream’s pricing page, last updated September 8, 2026, says live and on-demand video are billed by minutes stored and delivered; ingest and encoding are free, with bandwidth included in delivery pricing. The page lists delivery at $1 per 1,000 minutes and storage capacity in $5-per-month increments per 1,000 minutes. Its example of two people watching 30 minutes each totals 60 delivered minutes, or $0.06. A live broadcast with no viewers has no delivery-minute charge, although a retained recording uses storage. Check Cloudflare Stream’s current pricing and terms, and verify the service fits your intended YouTube workflow before comparing it with a YouTube loop host.

A self-operated delivery stack has multiple possible charges. AWS’s live-stream cost guide illustrates the distinction: one estimate for about 1,000 viewers watching a one-hour 540p event totals $69.74, including $2.50 for encoding and packaging and $67.24 for distribution. A separate estimate for 100 viewers watching 200 hours in a month is $3,838.69 under AWS’s specified 1080p and traffic assumptions. AWS says the first example depends on its assumptions and actual cost may be higher or lower; neither estimate is a quote for a rain stream. These examples show why viewer delivery can dominate encoding expense when you run your own distribution service. See AWS’s live-stream deployment cost guide and check its assumptions before using any estimate.

Which costs should you include?

  • Electricity: Base the PC estimate on average wall draw and your current local tariff. If it would be running anyway, count only the additional power caused by the stream.
  • Computer ownership and wear: If you buy a PC specifically for the stream, include its purchase and eventual replacement cost. If you already own it, decide how to account for wear rather than treating the entire purchase price as a new monthly bill.
  • Power and internet reliability: A local setup depends on the home connection and power staying available. Consider the value of monitoring and recovering from interruptions, not only the electricity bill.
  • Cloud inclusions and limits: Check whether the fee covers the looping host, VM resources, storage, recovery, or viewer delivery. A low headline fee may not include the same work as another option.
  • Setup time and backup power: Include these only if relevant to your decision. They are often excluded from simple electricity comparisons, but can affect the practical cost of keeping a stream live.
  • Taxes and changing prices: Provider prices, plan limits, and local electricity rates can change; verify current terms for your location before committing.

Managed YouTube loop-host examples

For a prerecorded ambient rain playlist sent to YouTube, a managed loop host is more directly comparable to running a PC than a platform designed to deliver playback to your own viewers. Compare the actual limits and recovery features, not just the monthly fee.

  1. StreamNeo — keeps an uploaded YouTube stream running from the cloud, at any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with the first day free. The computer can be off.
  2. Streamstead — its product page describes playlist-based, prerecorded 24/7 YouTube livestreams, scheduling, and automatic reconnect attempts. When accessed October 3, 2026, it listed Core at $29/month for one livestream and 100 GB storage, Pro at $69/month for three livestreams and 300 GB, and Studio at $149/month for ten livestreams and 1 TB. These are vendor-advertised prices at that date; taxes may apply, and current prices, plan limits, and features should be checked on Streamstead’s product page. Its FAQ describes uploaded videos and playlists rather than webcam streams, live production switching, or interactive events.
  3. Gyre — YouTube’s verified encoder list includes Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 streams of prerecorded videos. That listing establishes a relevant product category; it does not establish current pricing or other terms. See YouTube’s verified encoder list.

StreamNeo: a managed cloud option for a YouTube rain loop

StreamNeo is a cloud service by Yorker Media for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops it from the cloud, so a PC and home connection do not have to stay on. It is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera.

Choose the setup that fits your stream

  • Keep the PC if: you already own a suitable computer, its measured draw and your tariff make the electricity cost acceptable, and you are comfortable depending on your home power, internet, and ongoing monitoring.
  • Choose a managed YouTube loop host if: you want uploaded rain videos to keep streaming without leaving a computer running, and the service’s quality, storage, recovery, and price fit your needs.
  • Build a viewer-delivery stack only if: you specifically need to operate playback delivery yourself. Model the expected audience and viewing hours because delivery can cost far more than encoding.

Do not compare a managed loop-host fee with only a cloud VM’s headline price or with a full video-delivery estimate without checking what each includes. For five to six facts to enter in your comparison, use the same stream quality, hours, and stream count; measure PC wall draw; use your real tariff; and list cloud storage, recovery, and delivery separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the 120 W example describe a typical streaming PC?

No. It is an illustrative calculation based on a stated wall draw and the EIA’s 2025 U.S. residential average rate, not a measurement of a typical computer.

Does a local PC stream mean I need to pay for a separate CDN?

Not when the PC sends its stream to YouTube and YouTube handles viewer playback. A separate delivery system is a different architecture.
