24/7 YouTube Stream Cost in India: Raspberry Pi vs VPS in Rupees

There is no universal rupee cost for a 24/7 YouTube stream. Calculate Pi electricity from measured wall watts and compare a VPS’s compute, storage and transfer charges at your intended bitrate.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no reliable single monthly rupee figure for running a 24/7 YouTube stream on a Raspberry Pi or VPS: your electricity tariff, measured power draw, bitrate, VPS transfer allowance, taxes and exchange rate determine the bill. At YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate, a continuous 5 Mbps stream uses about 1.62 decimal TB of data in 30 days, and 6 Mbps uses about 1.94 TB, before protocol overhead. Those traffic amounts can make a low-priced VPS unsuitable if its included transfer is limited.

For a fair comparison, calculate Raspberry Pi electricity from its measured wall draw and your tariff, then include hardware costs. For a VPS, include compute, storage, traffic, taxes and currency conversion. Add the value of setup and recovery time to either option.

What determines the monthly cost?

For a 30-day month, electricity and network transfer are calculated differently. Do not treat a board specification as a household power measurement, or a server’s headline monthly price as the complete cost of a continuous stream.

Monthly energy (kWh) = measured watts × 720 hours ÷ 1,000

Monthly electricity cost = monthly energy (kWh) × your applicable tariff (₹/kWh)

For illustration only, a 3 W wall draw would use 2.16 kWh in 30 days. That is a scenario, not a measured streaming result. Your bill also depends on the tariff that applies to your household and any fixed charges not captured by this energy calculation.

Raspberry Pi’s documentation lists 800 mA as the Pi 5’s typical bare-board active current consumption and recommends a 27 W USB-C power supply. Neither figure is the Pi’s measured wall draw while streaming: peripherals add load, and power-supply losses affect consumption. Treat the documentation figures as specifications, not an estimate of your electricity bill. See Raspberry Pi’s computer documentation.

Include the board, suitable power supply, storage and any other required equipment in your comparison. If you already own them, you may compare only future outlay; for a full cost-of-ownership estimate, amortize their purchase costs over the period you expect to use them.

VPS compute, storage and transfer

A VPS bill can include the server plan, storage, traffic beyond the included allowance, tax and currency conversion. Record the provider, region, plan, monthly transfer allowance, excess-transfer terms, billing currency and applicable taxes before comparing it with a Pi. The available evidence does not establish a current official VPS bill for a specific workload, so a VPS price without those details would not be a dependable India-wide rupee estimate.

For an approximate 30-day transfer estimate, use:

Data sent (bytes) = bitrate (bits per second) × 2,592,000 seconds ÷ 8

YouTube recommends 5 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 and 6 Mbps at 1080p60. At those constant bitrates, the arithmetic works out to about 1.62 TB and 1.944 TB respectively in decimal units, before protocol overhead. These are calculated amounts, not vendor traffic statistics. Your actual transfer varies with bitrate and overhead. YouTube’s recommendations and setup guidance are in “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions”.

Compare the calculated traffic with the plan’s included transfer and overage rules. A plan with insufficient transfer may add cost or may not suit the workload under its terms. Do not assume that a server price includes enough traffic for uninterrupted continuous streaming.

Raspberry Pi vs VPS: what you pay for

Option Recurring cost Other cost variables Who maintains it
Raspberry Pi at home Electricity and internet; hardware is upfront or amortized Measured wall draw, household tariff, board, power supply, storage and any peripherals You handle the operating system, encoder, restart behavior, home internet and monitoring.
VPS Server charge, potentially plus storage and traffic Compute needs, included transfer, excess-transfer charges, tax, region and exchange rate You configure and monitor the server software; the stream no longer depends on your home computer or power.
Managed prerecorded-stream service Vendor subscription Stream count, resolution, storage, tax and recovery terms The vendor advertises automation; check its terms and assess performance for your needs.

These options are not interchangeable in every use case. A Raspberry Pi or VPS DIY setup requires you to operate the streaming software and respond to failures. A managed service may automate a prerecorded playlist, but its stream limits, output quality, storage and recovery terms need to fit your channel.

Which option fits your 24/7 stream?

Choose a Raspberry Pi if home infrastructure suits you

  • You have a reliable home internet connection and can keep the equipment powered.
  • You are willing to configure, update and monitor the operating system and encoder.
  • You can measure actual wall consumption and calculate electricity using your own tariff.
  • You have tested the upload capacity and can handle interruptions or restarts.

Choose a VPS if you want to move the computer off-site

  • You do not want the stream to depend on a home computer or home power.
  • You can configure and monitor the server and understand the provider’s traffic terms.
  • The included transfer, or the cost of excess transfer, works for the chosen bitrate.
  • You have verified that the selected plan can run your encoding or playback workload.

Consider managed streaming for a prerecorded playlist

For continuous playback of uploaded, prerecorded videos, managed services are a third cost case. YtLive Stream lists a ₹499/month starter plan for one active 720p stream and a ₹999/month Pro plan for two active 1080p streams; these are vendor-published terms, not independent performance findings, and should be checked at checkout. Its page advertises auto-recovery. StreamSetu lists plans from $5/month per channel, with exact quality pricing shown inside its dashboard. These vendor listings may change; compare current terms for included storage, stream count, quality, recovery and tax.

Important distinction: looping a file vs encoding live video

Replaying a prerecorded file and encoding a live camera or gameplay source are different workloads. A pre-rendered video is already encoded; a live source has to be captured and encoded into a digital stream. YouTube publishes encoder settings by codec, resolution and frame rate, but the available evidence does not establish that a Raspberry Pi can handle every input, codec, resolution or frame rate. Confirm performance for your particular setup rather than assuming a board suitable for file playback can encode any live source.

Set the stream quality before estimating costs

  1. Choose the resolution and frame rate. Use the intended output rather than selecting a bitrate in isolation.
  2. Set codec and bitrate. For H.264, YouTube’s recommendations include 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 6 Mbps for 1080p60. Different settings change monthly transfer.
  3. Configure the encoder’s stream URL and key. Follow YouTube’s instructions for connecting an encoder. Keep the stream key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
  4. Test your upload capacity before going live. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream,” and recommends running a speed test to test upload bitrate.
  5. Monitor stream health. A plan’s bandwidth allowance does not guarantee stable encoding or a healthy stream; check YouTube’s status feedback and the machine or service running the encoder.

See YouTube’s encoder settings and setup guidance for supported settings and connection details.

Archives and continuous broadcasts

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will produce a complete archive based on that guidance. If an archive matters, plan a recording or split the broadcast into sessions, and verify the current YouTube rules for your channel and workflow.

Copyright and channel eligibility still matter

Keeping a stream online does not grant rights to its music, video or other content, and a technically healthy stream does not guarantee monetization. Use content you own or are licensed to stream, and check YouTube’s current live-streaming and monetization rules for reused content. A 24/7 playlist should be reviewed for rights across every item, not only the first video. StreamNeo provides a copyright safety checklist as a planning aid.

Pi 5 Offers lightning-fast CPU speed, a PCI Express interface, a Real Time Clock (RTC) and a power button and runs significantly cooler than Pi 4.

A practical rupee comparison

  1. Set the workload. Write down the output resolution, frame rate, codec, target bitrate, number of simultaneous streams and whether you are looping a file or encoding a live source.
  2. Calculate monthly transfer. Use bitrate × 2,592,000 ÷ 8 for a 30-day month, then allow for protocol overhead and other traffic.
  3. Price the Pi setup. Measure watts at the wall under the intended workload, calculate 720-hour electricity use, multiply by your actual tariff, and add hardware costs as upfront or amortized expenses.
  4. Price the VPS in its billing terms. Add the selected region’s server charge, storage, transfer overages and tax. Convert the resulting bill using the actual billing exchange rate rather than an assumed conversion.
  5. Include operational effort. Account for setup, software maintenance, monitoring, and the time required to recover from a failure.
  6. Compare like with like. Check quality, stream count, storage, transfer, recovery arrangements and who is responsible for keeping the stream running.

For an individual India-based channel, the missing inputs are decisive: there is no single pan-India residential tariff, and the available evidence does not establish actual Pi streaming power or a current VPS bill for a specified workload. Measure your own setup and use your own provider quote instead of treating an illustrative figure as a guaranteed monthly cost.

Common cost-estimate mistakes

  • Using the Pi’s current rating as its wall draw: the official 800 mA figure is bare-board typical active consumption, not a measured streaming setup. Measure the complete system at the wall.
  • Ignoring data transfer: continuous streaming can send terabytes in a month. Calculate traffic at the bitrate you intend to use and compare it with the plan allowance.
  • Comparing only the VPS headline price: storage, excess traffic, tax, region and exchange rate can change the bill.
  • Assuming a Pi can encode any live input: looping an encoded file does not demonstrate that the same device can encode a camera or gameplay source at the desired quality.
  • Assuming a stream will recover by itself: YouTube recommends testing and monitoring, but that guidance does not guarantee a particular device’s uptime. Check who is responsible for restarting and reconnecting after a failure.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the job is looping uploaded videos on YouTube, StreamNeo avoids keeping a computer running at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. It runs in the cloud, plays the uploads as made up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.

Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery and StreamNeo team support. Plans differ by length, not by included product. Monthly: $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; cards are accepted worldwide.
