Amazon CloudFront can deliver a 24/7 live channel to viewers, but it does not encode or package a raw video feed by itself. A typical AWS workflow uses MediaLive to encode the source, MediaPackage to package it when the workflow needs that service’s formats or features, and CloudFront to distribute the resulting manifests and video segments. If MediaLive already produces formats suitable for all target devices, AWS also documents MediaStore as an origin option.
What CloudFront does in a continuous live channel
A player does not usually receive one unprepared video feed from CloudFront. It requests a manifest that describes the stream and then retrieves the media segments named by that manifest. The upstream workflow must produce those playback-ready files and keep updating the live presentation as the channel continues.

AWS describes live delivery formats including HLS, DASH, Smooth Streaming, and CMAF. Which format and endpoint paths you use depend on the packaging workflow and the devices you intend to support. CloudFront is the delivery layer in that chain: it serves the prepared output from an origin to viewers.

Choose the origin and packaging path
| Path | When it fits | What it provides in the documented workflow |
|---|---|---|
| MediaLive → MediaPackage → CloudFront | Use this path when the workflow needs MediaPackage to prepare outputs for multiple formats or requires packaging features such as DRM. | MediaLive encodes the source; MediaPackage provides delivery endpoints; CloudFront distributes their output. |
| MediaLive → MediaStore → CloudFront | Consider this origin path when MediaLive has already produced formats suitable for all intended playback devices. | MediaStore is the origin for already-formatted output; CloudFront distributes it. |
These are different origin and packaging choices, not interchangeable names for the same step. Decide based on the formats your viewers need, whether packaging features are required, and the endpoint structure you will configure. AWS’s guidance for new MediaLive-to-MediaPackage workflows recommends the MediaPackage v2 output group using CMAF Ingest, including for low-latency delivery. Confirm the version and channel configuration before applying examples written for MediaPackage v1.
Plan the channel before configuring CloudFront
1. Identify the source and playback formats
Determine how the live source reaches the encoding workflow and which playback formats the channel must deliver. Select an upstream path that can produce those formats. If the output must be packaged into multiple formats or needs DRM-related packaging features, MediaPackage is the documented choice; if the encoded output already suits every target device, MediaStore is a documented origin option.
2. Decide whether low latency is required
Low-latency delivery affects the upstream configuration and the requests CloudFront must handle. For a new MediaLive-to-MediaPackage workflow, AWS recommends MediaPackage v2 CMAF Ingest. Do not assume that a configuration example for another MediaPackage version or endpoint will apply unchanged.

3. Map actual endpoint paths
Record the real endpoint paths and the format each one serves before creating CloudFront behaviors. AWS’s MediaPackage guidance uses endpoint-specific path patterns and illustrates separate behaviors for manifests and segments. The right extensions and paths depend on whether the endpoint serves HLS, CMAF, DASH, or another supported format. Treat examples as patterns: substitute the identifiers and paths for your endpoint and verify the output before relying on them.
Configure the AWS delivery workflow
- Ingest the live source. Establish the live input that MediaLive will encode. The source and its availability are upstream concerns; CloudFront does not create the feed.
- Encode with MediaLive. Configure MediaLive to produce the required outputs. Choose the output formats to match the playback and packaging design rather than assuming CloudFront will convert the encoded output.
- Choose the origin path. Use MediaPackage when multi-format packaging or features such as DRM are needed. Use MediaStore as an origin when MediaLive has already produced the formats required by the intended devices.
- Create the CloudFront origin. Point the distribution at the relevant origin or MediaPackage endpoint. Use the actual endpoint details for the deployment; do not copy identifiers or paths from an example.
- Add cache behaviors for the endpoint paths. Route manifest and segment requests with path patterns that match the endpoint’s real output. Check each format’s path structure so requests reach the intended behavior.
- Set the manifest cache policy for LL-HLS when needed. If you use LL-HLS blocking playlist requests, forward the
_HLS_msnand_HLS_partquery-string parameters in the manifest cache policy. Without those parameters being forwarded, the blocking playlist request behavior described by AWS is not configured as intended. - Authorize CloudFront to access MediaPackage. AWS recommends header-based CDN authorization between MediaPackage and CloudFront. Configure and verify that authorization for the MediaPackage workflow rather than leaving the origin access path open by assumption.
- Test playback through the distribution. Request the manifest through CloudFront and confirm that it references media segments that are also retrievable through the intended distribution paths. Test the formats and endpoint paths your viewers will actually use, including LL-HLS behavior if it is part of the design.
Reference architecture and resilience
AWS’s Live Streaming solution describes a reference design with two feeds processed in parallel by MediaLive, MediaPackage producing HLS, DASH, and CMAF endpoints, and CloudFront authorized to access MediaPackage using a CDN Identifier. It is an AWS-documented design, not a requirement that every channel use the same number of feeds, formats, or endpoints. Choose redundancy and output formats to meet the channel’s actual operational needs.
For a continuously available channel, consider failure points across the whole chain: source availability, encoding, packaging, origin access, distribution configuration, and playback. CloudFront alone cannot compensate for a missing or invalid upstream feed. Validate the end-to-end path and the failure handling appropriate to your deployment.

Estimate the cost for your own channel
AWS publishes an illustrative event estimate of $69.74 per hour for a configuration with 1,000 viewers and a one-hour live event. The publication year is not stated in the source, and the figure depends on that example’s input and output profiles and other assumptions. It is not a general current price for a 24/7 channel.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Do not multiply that event example by 24 and treat the result as a quote. A continuous channel’s estimate depends on its output bitrate and encoding ladder, audience traffic and viewing hours, geographic distribution, service choices, packaging needs, and redundancy. Build an estimate from the channel’s expected workload and current prices for the account’s region.
- Define the output formats and bitrate ladder.
- Estimate concurrent viewers and total viewing hours.
- Account for the regions where viewers will watch.
- Include the chosen encoding, packaging, origin, and delivery services.
- Include the redundancy and low-latency design you intend to operate.
Troubleshooting common delivery problems
The stream is not playable through CloudFront
Check the chain in order: confirm MediaLive is producing output, confirm the origin has the expected manifest and segments, and verify that the CloudFront origin and path patterns match the real endpoint. A manifest can be reachable while its referenced segments are not, so test both.

Manifest or segment requests return errors
Compare the requested URL with the endpoint’s actual format-specific path and the CloudFront behavior that should match it. Recheck copied endpoint identifiers and extensions, and make sure manifest and segment paths are routed to the intended origin behavior.
LL-HLS blocking playlist requests do not behave as expected
For manifest requests using the blocking playlist request feature, verify that the cache policy forwards both _HLS_msn and _HLS_part. Also verify that the workflow’s MediaPackage version and endpoint configuration match the low-latency design you selected.

CloudFront cannot retrieve the MediaPackage output
Check the recommended header-based CDN authorization between MediaPackage and CloudFront, along with the origin and endpoint configuration. A path that resolves correctly does not by itself prove that origin authorization is configured correctly.

Playback works in one format but not another
Verify that the upstream workflow creates the required format and that its endpoint has a matching CloudFront behavior. HLS, CMAF, and DASH can use different endpoint paths; a behavior copied from one format may not match another.
