Libby is free to use and has no subscription charge or late fees, but you need a library card and each library decides which titles and lending rules it offers.
What you need to use Libby
- A library card from a library that offers Libby. Some libraries let you get an instant digital card in the app; otherwise, check the library’s website or ask at a branch.
- A supported iOS or Android device, a newer Fire tablet, or a computer with an up-to-date browser. On a computer, go to libbyapp.com.
Libby Help lists iOS 10+ and Android 7.1+ as supported baselines, but app and operating-system requirements can change. Check the current app-store listing if you cannot install the app. You can add more than one library, but you need the appropriate card for each and must follow that library’s rules. Catalogs, card eligibility, lending periods, and borrowing limits vary by library.

Set up Libby and borrow an audiobook
- Open Libby. Install the app on a supported mobile device or Fire tablet, or visit libbyapp.com in a desktop browser.
- Find your library and sign in. Search for the library, select it, and enter your card details. If Libby offers an instant digital card, follow the prompts; if not, contact the library about getting a card.
- Find a title. Search by title, author, or series, or browse the library’s catalog. Open an audiobook’s details to check its availability.
- Borrow or place a hold. Tap Borrow if a copy is available. If it is checked out, tap Place Hold to join the library’s wait list. Libby will notify you when the hold is ready; the wait depends on the library’s queue and collection.
Libraries set their own lending periods and limits. A title missing from the catalog may show Notify Me at libraries that offer the feature. That lets the library know you are interested; it does not guarantee the title will be added.
Start playback and use the controls
- Open Shelf in Libby.
- Select Loans, then open the audiobook.
- Tap Play. Use the player’s playback-speed controls to adjust narration speed or its sleep timer to stop playback after a set time.
Listen offline or stream
In the mobile app, audiobook loans download over Wi-Fi automatically by default. Once a loan is downloaded, you can listen without an internet connection while the loan remains active. A cloud-marked loan needs internet and streams when opened. Libby in a browser at libbyapp.com requires an internet connection.

To manage downloads in the mobile app, open Menu > Downloads and adjust automatic-download or Wi-Fi-only settings. Libby Help says most audiobooks are larger than 300 MB; that is a general service-provided estimate, not a size guarantee for every title. Check available device storage and, if you want to avoid mobile-data use, keep downloads set to Wi-Fi.
Listen through a Bluetooth speaker
You can send audio from the Libby mobile app to a Google Home or Amazon Echo over Bluetooth. Pair and connect your phone or tablet with the speaker, then start the audiobook in Libby. Playback still starts in Libby: Libby Help says voice commands cannot play its audiobooks. You can also listen through your device’s own speakers or headphones.

Renewals, returns, and fees
Libby automatically returns a loan on its due date, so there are no late fees. You may be able to renew a title a few days before it is due, depending on the library’s rules and whether the title is available for renewal. If you want access through another library, add it to Libby and sign in with that library’s card.
