An electric car can shield the miles you drive electrically from gasoline and diesel price spikes caused by oil supply disruptions. It does not eliminate exposure to energy costs: electricity prices vary, some drivers still use liquid fuel, and the power system can face its own constraints. How much protection you get depends on your driving and local electricity costs.
Why oil supply shocks can move fuel prices sharply
Oil supply disruptions can follow geopolitical events or severe weather. Prices may move sharply because, in the short term, both oil production capacity and the equipment that uses petroleum are difficult to change. Drivers cannot quickly switch fuels or make their vehicles more efficient, so a comparatively large price change may be needed to bring supply and demand back into balance. The U.S. Energy Information Administration explains this short-run dynamic in its analysis of oil prices and markets.

How an electric car changes a driver’s exposure
An EV uses electricity instead of gasoline or diesel for the distance driven electrically. If pump prices rise because oil is scarce, that does not directly raise the cost of charging in the same way it raises the cost of fuel for a combustion car. A plug-in hybrid offers partial insulation only for the miles it travels on electricity; fuel used for the rest of its driving remains exposed to pump prices.

For an individual household, the practical effect depends on three things:
#1 Best Overall
- 2 Modes of Operation: There are two ways to operate the 12V electric stroller, which can be operated by the child himself by manipulating the steering wheel and foot pedal. If the child can not drive, the parents can control the direction and speed by remote control
- 3-Speed & Smooth Start: The remote control provides 3-speed adjustment and manual operation provides 2-speed adjustment to ensure the safety of children, while equipped with a smooth start design to ensure the safety of your kids. The maximum speed can reach 3Mph
- Realistic Experience: The power wheel car comes with bright headlights and realistic taillights that look like real models, built-in music, voltage display, USB and AUX connectors, volume control, TF card slot and speakers, along with a widened seat and adjustable seat belt design to ensure a safe and comfortable experience for children
- Rechargeable & Durable: The battery type is 12V, the time required for charging is 8-12 hours, and it can run for 1-2 hours when fully charged, suitable for both indoor and outdoor use
- Age and Weight Capacity: This children's car has a maximum weight capacity of 55Lbs, suitable for children from 3 to 5 years old, with excellent reliability of use
- How much driving is electric: More electric miles mean less gasoline or diesel purchased.
- Local electricity prices and tariffs: Charging costs vary by location, rate plan, and when the car is charged.
- Remaining liquid-fuel use: A second combustion vehicle, long trips in a plug-in hybrid, or other fuel-dependent transport can leave some exposure in place.
What fleet-wide EV estimates show—and what they do not
The International Energy Agency estimates that the global EV fleet displaced around 1.7 million barrels of oil per day in 2025. That is a fleet-wide estimate, not the amount saved by an individual driver or a forecast of how a future disruption would affect retail fuel prices. The IEA compares EV travel with the fuel that comparable internal-combustion and hybrid vehicles would have used for the same distance, so the estimate depends on that counterfactual and related assumptions. See the IEA Global EV Outlook 2026.
The same outlook estimates that EVs consumed around 250 TWh of electricity globally in 2025. That illustrates the shift: electrification reduces transport’s oil demand while increasing demand for electricity. It does not make the energy needed for transport disappear.

Electricity is a different exposure, not no exposure
Charging costs are shaped by electricity prices, tariffs, weather, and grid conditions. Power markets may also be affected by fuel costs. The IEA’s 2024 analysis says that “The transition to a more electrified, efficient, renewables-rich energy system will reduce overall exposure to fossil fuel price volatility.” That is a system-level conclusion, not a guarantee about any one household’s bill. The agency also warns that inadequate grid investment, flexibility, demand response, and resilience can leave power systems vulnerable. In other words, an EV can reduce your direct dependence on oil for driving, but the degree to which electricity costs are insulated from fossil-fuel volatility depends on the local power system and how it is managed.

Oil risks and battery-mineral risks affect owners differently
Oil and mineral supply risks are not equivalent for an existing driver. An oil disruption can affect combustion-vehicle owners directly through fuel availability and prices. A shortage or price spike involving minerals used in batteries can affect the production and cost of new EVs and clean-energy equipment; it does not stop an already-owned EV from driving in the same immediate way. Mineral sourcing and concentrated processing still matter to the resilience and future cost of the transition. The IEA discusses these distinctions in its analysis of critical minerals in clean-energy transitions.

There is no universal savings figure or exposure score that applies to every EV owner. To judge how much an EV could reduce your oil-shock exposure, compare your expected electric driving with your remaining fuel use and the electricity rates available where you charge. At the wider energy-system level, the relevant trade-offs also include oil displaced, added electricity demand, grid resilience, and mineral supply-chain concentration.
