How Steam Big Picture Mode Works With Android Game Streaming

Big Picture Mode handles controller-friendly navigation, Steam Link connects Android to your PC, and Remote Play streams the game and returns your input.

Steam Big Picture Mode is the controller-friendly interface for browsing and launching games; Steam Link is the Android app that connects your device to a computer running Steam; and Remote Play is the streaming technology that carries the game to your screen and returns your input. The game runs on the computer, not natively on the Android device.

What Big Picture Mode, Steam Link and Remote Play each do

Part What it does
Big Picture Mode A controller-friendly Steam interface for browsing and launching games. Valve says you can enter it with the Big Picture button in the Steam client or a controller’s home button while using the client. Steam Support: Big Picture mode
Steam Link The Android app that connects a phone, tablet or TV to a computer running Steam. Valve describes it as bringing desktop gaming to an Android device. Steam Support: Android Steam Link App
Remote Play The technology that streams video and audio from the host computer to the Android device and sends remote input back to the computer. Valve describes this data flow on its Steam Remote Play page.

These roles work together: Big Picture Mode provides the interface, Steam Link makes the Android connection, and Remote Play transports the game and input. Big Picture Mode is not itself the streaming protocol.

What you need before connecting

  • A computer with Steam running and the game you want to play.
  • An Android phone, tablet or TV that can run Steam Link. Valve’s Remote Play compatibility listing specifies Android 5.0 or later; check the current app listing and support information because requirements and availability can change. Steam Remote Play compatibility
  • A network connection between the computer and Android device.
  • An input method: a compatible controller paired to the Android device, or touchscreen controls where the game supports a suitable layout.

Steam Link is listed on Google Play. Valve’s Android Steam Link support page also describes an Android download route for users who cannot access Google Play.

Connect Steam Link and start a game

  1. Install Steam Link on the Android phone, tablet or TV, using Google Play or Valve’s support-page download route if Google Play is unavailable.
  2. Start Steam on the computer that will run the game. Keep the host computer and Android device connected to the network.
  3. Open Steam Link and connect it to the computer. Follow the app’s connection and pairing prompts to link the Android device to the Steam client.
  4. Choose an input method. Pair a Bluetooth controller with Android, or use touchscreen controls if the game offers a suitable configuration.
  5. Browse Steam and launch the game. Use the Steam interface, including Big Picture Mode for controller-focused navigation. The computer runs the game and sends its video and sound to Android; the device sends your controls back to the computer.

Valve’s Steamworks Remote Play documentation explains how game developers can configure mobile touch controls, including bindings and on-screen control placement. How usable that layout feels depends on the game.

Choose controls and a network for your device

Controller or touchscreen

A Bluetooth controller paired with the Android device is the straightforward physical-control option named in Valve’s Steam Link app listing, which also mentions the Steam Controller. It is optional: touchscreen controls can be used where a game has an appropriate layout. Steamworks documentation describes developer-configured touch bindings and separate action sets for games with multiple modes, so control layouts are not necessarily the same from game to game.

Phone, tablet or Android TV

Screen size and input needs affect which setup is comfortable. Valve’s developer documentation says games marked as optimized for phone or tablet Remote Play should provide a recommended touch configuration and suitable interface and font sizing; it also accounts for tablet aspect ratios. That guidance does not mean every game will work equally well on every Android screen or with every input method. Steamworks Remote Play documentation

Network arrangement

Valve’s Google Play listing recommends connecting both the computer and Android TV to the router by Ethernet. For a phone or tablet, Valve recommends connecting the computer to a 5 GHz Wi-Fi router by Ethernet, connecting the mobile device to the router’s 5 GHz band, and keeping it within a reasonable range of the router. These are recommendations for setup, not guarantees of a particular frame rate, image quality or latency. Steam Link on Google Play

What the app’s recent update says—and does not say

Latency and compatibility depend on the setup

Valve says Remote Play sends video and audio from the gaming PC to another device and sends remote input and multiplayer voice back to the PC “within milliseconds.” That is Valve’s description of the technology, not a measured latency figure for Android or a guarantee of a specific delay. The official materials cited here do not provide a general Android latency number or a controlled performance comparison.

Game compatibility and usability also vary: the computer must be able to run the game, while the Android screen, controls and network affect the streaming experience. If a game’s interface or touch layout does not suit the device, a paired controller or a larger screen may be a better fit; neither is mandatory for every setup.
