Use the Activision account that already contains your Call of Duty progression. Sign in at Activision, open Linked Accounts, select Link Account beside PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, Battle.net, Nintendo or another supported provider, enter the one-time email code, and finish signing in on the provider’s site. Then launch Modern Warfare 4 or Warzone with that same Activision account everywhere. Progression is stored on the Activision account, not on the console or PC account.
Linking a platform to a different Activision account does not move your levels, Battle Pass progress or unlocked content. Activision says the original progress and content remain available when you relink that platform to the original account, but unlinking is limited and can be security-restricted.

Why the Activision account controls cross-progression
Modern Warfare 4 requires an Activision login for online play to support crossplay and cross-progression, according to Activision’s August 20, 2026 in-game account-registration guidance. The Activision account is the identity that stores progress in games with cross-progression. Your PlayStation Network, Xbox, Steam, Battle.net or Nintendo login identifies the platform account, but it does not replace the Activision account that owns your Call of Duty data.
That distinction matters when you move between a console and PC, upgrade within a console family, or reinstall the game. The platform account must be linked to the same Activision account where the original progress or content was earned. Simply using the same console profile, the same email on a platform store, or the same copy of the game is not enough if the Activision account is different.

Before you link anything
Find the account that has your progress
Use the Activision account associated with your existing Modern Warfare 4 or Warzone profile. If you are already playing on one platform, open the game’s account details or sign-in information and note the Activision identity before connecting another platform. Do not create a new Activision account just because you are adding a second device.
Have access to the account email
Activision sends a one-time verification code to the email address on the Activision account when you change linked accounts. You must be able to receive that message. If you cannot access the email or do not know the password, recover the account or change its email and password first; do not try to solve an access problem by linking a new platform to a different account.
Prepare the platform login
Have the credentials ready for the provider you want to connect. The linking flow may send you to the provider’s own website for authentication. Supported choices shown by Activision include PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, Blizzard (Battle.net), Nintendo and other providers listed in your account.

Understand the one-account-per-provider rule
An Activision account can have only one linked account for each provider or manufacturer. For example, you cannot attach two separate Steam accounts to the same Activision account at the same time. This rule is separate from the 12-month unlink limit, so check every identity carefully before confirming.
How to link PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, Battle.net or Nintendo
- Open Activision account management. Create a free Activision account only if you truly do not have one. Otherwise, sign in to the existing account that owns your Modern Warfare 4 or Warzone progression.
- Go to Linked Accounts. The page lists the platform providers currently available for your account, including PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, Blizzard and Nintendo where supported.
- Choose Link Account. Select Link Account beside the platform you want to add. Start this step only after checking that the listed Activision account is the one with your progress.
- Verify by email. Activision sends a one-time code to the account email. Enter the code in the verification prompt. If it does not arrive, check spam or junk folders, confirm that you can still receive mail at the address, and request a new code rather than guessing.
- Authenticate with the platform provider. Continue to the provider’s website and sign in to the exact PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, Battle.net or Nintendo account you intend to use. Review the account name shown during authentication before approving access.
- Confirm the linked status. Return to Activision’s Linked Accounts page and verify that the expected provider account is listed. If a different account appears, stop before launching the game and correct the link while you still have the account details in front of you.
- Launch Modern Warfare 4 or Warzone. Start the game on the newly linked platform and sign in with the same Activision account. The game should load the progression associated with that account rather than creating a separate profile.
What carries over when the account is the same
Activision’s September 28, 2026 account-management guidance says games with cross-progression store game progress on the Activision account. Modern Warfare 4 guidance says Battle Pass progress and unlocked content are available on all platforms when the same linked Activision account is used. Warzone guidance likewise describes full progression and content purchased with COD Points carrying to supported current-generation consoles and PC under the same account.

| Item | Same Activision account on linked platforms | Different Activision account |
|---|---|---|
| Game levels and other progression | Follows the Activision account in a cross-progression game. | Does not carry over; the other account has its own progression. |
| Modern Warfare 4 Battle Pass progress | Available on platforms using the same linked Activision account. | Remains with the original Activision account. |
| Unlocked items and content | Generally available on linked platforms under the same account, subject to the game’s platform rules. | Not transferred to the newly linked account. |
| Warzone progression and COD-Point purchases | Activision’s Warzone guidance says they carry to supported current-generation consoles and PC when the same account is used. | They do not appear on the other Activision account. |
| Platform-store identity | Must be linked to the Activision account that owns the data. | Linking it elsewhere does not merge accounts. |
COD Points, Battle Pass progress and purchases are different
The most common surprise is that account progress and currency do not follow identical rules.
Battle Pass progress and unlocked rewards
Battle Pass progress is account-linked in Modern Warfare 4. When you use the same Activision account on each linked platform, the progress and rewards associated with that account are available there.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →COD Points balance and spending
COD Points bought or earned through Battle Pass progression are tied to the platform account for spending. That means the balance may not be available to spend in exactly the same way on every platform, even when your Battle Pass level and unlocked rewards are visible everywhere. If a balance appears missing, check the platform on which the points were purchased or earned before assuming that your Activision account lost them.
Items bought with COD Points
Content purchased with COD Points is generally usable on linked platforms because the item is associated with the game account. This is different from the currency used to buy it. Activision also notes that some purchases made with real money remain tied to the platform where the transaction occurred. A platform-specific purchase can therefore remain unavailable on another device even though your progression and COD-Point items are present.
Console upgrades and supported platforms
For Warzone, Activision’s platform guidance describes full progression and COD-Point-purchased content carrying to supported current-generation consoles and PC when the same linked account is used. A move within the same console family is covered by the same-account rule: use the Activision account where the original progress or content was earned.

“Supported” is important. Activision can change which console generations, versions and content types participate in cross-progression. Check the current Warzone and Modern Warfare 4 account guidance for your platform before assuming that an older console, a regional edition or a particular real-money item follows the current-generation rules.
What happens if you linked the wrong Activision account?
Linking the platform to the wrong Activision account does not merge the two profiles and does not move the old progress to the new one. Activision says your progress and content are not deleted. They become available again when the platform is relinked to the original Activision account that held them.
Recovery sequence
- Stop launching the game on the wrongly linked account, so you do not confuse which profile is active.
- Identify the original Activision account by checking the account email, password, and the platform on which the progress was earned.
- If you cannot sign in, use Activision’s account-recovery process. If the email or password is no longer usable, complete the email or password-change workflow first.
- Review the Linked Accounts page on the incorrect account and determine whether the platform can be unlinked. Do not proceed if the page shows a security restriction or if you are unsure which account is original.
- After the platform is available to move, sign in to the original Activision account and link that platform there. Complete the email code and provider authentication again.
- Launch Modern Warfare 4 or Warzone and verify the expected level, Battle Pass progress and unlocked content.
The 12-month unlink limit
Activision states that an individual platform account may be unlinked once every 12 months. Unlinking can also be restricted for accounts under enforcement or when suspicious activity is detected. This is why experimenting with several Activision accounts is risky: a mistaken link can leave you unable to move the platform again immediately.

The verification email never arrives
- Confirm that you are checking the email address displayed for the Activision account, not the address on the console or PC store account.
- Check spam, junk and filtered folders.
- Request a fresh code and enter the newest message; older codes may no longer be valid.
- If you no longer control the address, recover or change the Activision account email before attempting another link.
The provider sign-in opens the wrong account
Sign out of the provider’s website first, or use a private browser window, then authenticate with the intended PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, Battle.net or Nintendo identity. Verify the account name shown on the provider page before approving the connection.
The game starts with a new profile
Return to Activision account management and compare the account currently linked to the platform with the account that owns your original progress. A new profile usually indicates that the platform is attached to a different Activision account, not that the original data was erased.

- Some features may require an internet connection and an online subscription
Progress appears but COD Points do not
Check where the COD Points were purchased or earned. Currency spending is platform-tied, while Battle Pass progress and many COD-Point-purchased items are account-linked. The difference can produce a correct progression transfer without an identical currency balance on every platform.
An item bought with real money is missing
Some real-money purchases remain tied to the platform where they were bought. Confirm the purchase platform and the edition or content type before unlinking anything. Moving accounts will not convert a platform-bound purchase into a universally available item.
Unlinking is blocked
A 12-month limit, account enforcement or suspicious-activity protection may prevent the change. Do not repeatedly submit link attempts. Recover the correct account and contact Activision support through its account-management process if the restriction does not match your situation.
Security checks that prevent an expensive mistake
- Use only the official Activision account-management page and the genuine provider sign-in page.
- Never share the one-time email code or your Activision password with another person.
- Confirm the Activision email before every account change, especially on a shared computer.
- Keep a record of which platform account is linked to which Activision account before a console upgrade.
- Do not create multiple accounts to test whether progress will merge; Activision does not merge progression by linking different identities.
What Activision has and has not quantified
Activision’s published guidance does not provide a success rate for account linking, a percentage of content that transfers, or a guaranteed transfer time. The concrete operational limit it gives is the once-per-12-month unlink policy for an individual platform account. Carryover depends on the same Activision identity, the supported platform and generation, and whether the item is account-linked or platform-bound.

- Adding a platform: sign in to the existing Activision account, open Linked Accounts, verify by email, authenticate the provider, and launch the game with that same account.
- Moving a console-family upgrade: use the Activision account that held the original Warzone or Modern Warfare 4 progress.
- Checking Battle Pass rewards: use the same linked Activision account on every platform.
- Checking COD Points: look at the platform where the points were bought or earned; spending availability is platform-tied.
- Fixing a wrong link: recover the original account first, remember the 12-month unlink limit, and relink only after confirming every identity.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need separate Activision accounts for PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, Battle.net and Nintendo?
No. Use one Activision account containing your progression and link one account from each supported provider to it. Each provider can contribute only one linked platform account at a time.
Will reinstalling Modern Warfare 4 recreate my progress?
No. In a cross-progression game, progress is stored on the Activision account. Reinstalling does not replace the need to sign in with the original account.
Can Activision merge two profiles after I played on both accounts?
The linking rules do not merge separate Activision profiles. Progress remains associated with the account where it was earned.
