There is no single universal switch established for stopping every use of Meta AI chats and account activity. In its October 1, 2025 announcement, “Improving Your Recommendations on Our Apps With AI at Meta,” Meta said that, beginning December 16, 2025, interactions with its AI features—including text and voice conversations—would inform content and ad recommendations in most regions. Meta’s example was that asking Meta AI about hiking could affect recommendations for hiking groups, trail posts, and hiking-boot ads. This is a statement about personalization; it does not by itself establish that every AI interaction is used to train a model.
The example also illustrates why an AI conversation may have an effect beyond the answer on screen: a topic mentioned to an AI feature could become a signal for recommendations. Meta’s announcement does not mean that every person will see a particular ad or post after asking a particular question. It describes a possible personalization use, not a guaranteed outcome for every conversation.

Meta said Ads Preferences and other feed controls can adjust what people see. It also said it does not use specified sensitive topics—health, religion, political views, sexual orientation, racial or ethnic origin, philosophical beliefs, or trade-union membership—to show ads. That stated limit is not a general opt-out from content personalization. Ads Preferences may address ads, while feed controls may address other recommendations; neither should be read as erasing a chat or excluding it from every other data use.
Linked accounts and activity shared by businesses
Meta says information can be used across Meta Company Products when a person adds accounts to the same Accounts Center. Its October 2025 announcement gave WhatsApp as an example: if a WhatsApp account is not added to Accounts Center, WhatsApp AI interactions will not be used to personalize experiences across different Meta accounts. Check your own account connections; do not assume every app is linked or isolated.
This is a cross-account point, not a claim that an unlinked account has no personalization within the service where you use Meta AI. Conversely, finding several accounts in one Accounts Center does not mean you can infer exactly which particular recommendation was caused by a particular chat. The practical check is the list of accounts actually connected to your Accounts Center, rather than assumptions based on using the same phone number, device, or Meta-owned apps.
A separate source is activity that other businesses share with Meta, such as games played or purchases made on their sites. In its June 9, 2026 announcement, “Better Personalization and Changes to Controls for Your Activity From Other Businesses,” Meta said it was expanding the Activity from other businesses control to cover uses beyond ads, including feed content and AI responses. Meta also said it was discontinuing the older Your activity off Meta technologies control. Because the setting is changing, check the current label in Settings or Accounts Center. This concerns activity shared by businesses, not messages typed directly into Meta AI.

Keep those data sources separate when reviewing settings. A purchase or game activity shared by another business is not the same as something you type to Meta AI; a saved memory is not the same as a visible chat; and a connection between accounts is not the same as a training objection. A control that names one source should not be assumed to govern the others.

The table is a way to choose an action, not a promise that one action removes all traces of a topic. If your concern is that an AI conversation is visible in your history, chat deletion is the relevant cleanup. If your concern is a saved detail the assistant may remember, look for memory management separately. If your concern is cross-account personalization, inspect Accounts Center. If your concern is activity a business shares with Meta, look for the current business-activity setting. If your concern is model training, consider the specific EU objection process only if it applies to you.
How to reduce what Meta AI can retain or use
- Keep sensitive information out of ordinary AI chats. Do not enter passwords, financial identifiers, health details, or other information you would not be comfortable sharing with the service. This is a prudent way to limit disclosure; it is not a claim that any particular detail will definitely be used in a particular way. If you need help with a sensitive issue, ask a general question without including identifying details.
- Delete AI conversations or request deletion of shared information. WhatsApp Help’s “How to organize your chats with Meta AI” describes deleting individual chats with Meta AI or requesting deletion of information previously shared with Meta AI. Use the option available in your app or the relevant Help Center instructions. The cited guidance does not promise that deleting a conversation reverses every other use or retention process. Treat deletion as a direct cleanup step for the chat or information covered by that action, not as proof of a complete opt-out.
- Check for saved memories and remove them separately. Meta’s January 27, 2025 announcement, “Building Toward a Smarter, More Personalized Assistant,” described memory of certain details shared in one-to-one WhatsApp and Messenger conversations and said people could delete those memories. If a memory control is available to you, review it separately from chat history; availability may vary. Deleting a chat does not establish that a separately saved memory was removed, and removing a memory does not establish that the visible conversation was deleted.
- Choose Incognito Chat when it is offered. Meta announced Incognito Chat for WhatsApp and the Meta AI app on May 13, 2026. Meta describes it as a temporary conversation processed in a secure environment that Meta cannot access; messages disappear by default and the chat is not saved. The announcement described a gradual rollout over the coming months, so confirm that the feature is actually present before relying on it. These are Meta’s claims, not independently verified security findings. Start the conversation in the offered Incognito mode; do not assume an ordinary conversation can be converted to temporary mode after the fact.
- Inspect Accounts Center connections. Check which of your accounts are connected there. Meta’s stated WhatsApp example means that a WhatsApp account not added to Accounts Center will not have its AI interactions used to personalize experiences across different Meta accounts. This addresses the cross-account link described by Meta, not all uses within the service where you chatted. If you want to limit that route, confirm the account’s current connection state rather than infer it from the apps you use together.
- Review Activity from other businesses. Find the current control in Settings or Accounts Center and read its live description. Meta said the expanded control would cover feed and AI-response personalization as well as ads, while the older similarly named control was being discontinued. Do not rely on an old guide’s label or assume this setting governs your direct AI conversations. Its focus is information businesses share about your activity, such as games played or purchases made on their sites.
- Adjust recommendations separately if that is your concern. Meta pointed to Ads Preferences and other feed controls for adjusting what people see. Those settings can help manage recommendations, but Meta did not describe them as deleting chats, deleting memories, or opting out of all training. Can Meta AI read your WhatsApp chats?

For practical purposes, check which chat you are in before sending anything sensitive. If you are using Meta AI, apply the same caution you would to an ordinary AI service: do not enter a password, financial identifier, or personal detail unless you are comfortable sharing it. If your question is about a direct AI chat already sent, review that chat’s deletion options and any separate memory controls that are available.
Can you stop Meta AI from using chats for ads or training?
There is no general-purpose control established here that blocks all personalization from AI interactions across all regions and apps. How to check whether a change worked
- After deleting a chat, confirm that the conversation is no longer visible in the AI chat list. This confirms the visible cleanup, not every separate data use.
- After removing a saved memory, inspect the memory controls again if the app provides them; do not infer that the chat itself was deleted.
- Before using Incognito Chat, confirm the option is shown for the conversation you are about to start. Do not assume a normal chat becomes temporary retroactively.
- Review the connected-account list in Accounts Center rather than relying on assumptions about whether WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, or another Meta account is linked.
- Re-read the live Activity from other businesses description after any settings change. Meta has announced a transition in the name and scope of this control.
