What Weapon Amplification does
Weapon Amplification is an upgrade system accessed through the Raider Outpost’s Gunsmith and Research Workstation. Embark Studios described it as a branching path of weapon abilities and enhancements that can change a gun’s behavior. Its examples included a fully automatic Burletta, a scoped Renegade, and a Rattler with incendiary rounds and a 64-round drum magazine. Those are examples of possible transformations, not a promise that every weapon has the same choices.

At launch, Embark said the system would cover 15 weapons, with more planned. That figure describes the announced initial scope; it does not establish the current roster after subsequent updates. Check the live Gunsmith interface to see whether your weapon is supported and which options are currently available.

There are two parts to the process: use an Amplification Module at the Gunsmith to amplify an eligible weapon, then use research to unlock upgrade types and buy the weapon’s individual nodes. Having the module alone does not complete the upgrade tree.
This distinction is useful when planning your materials. The module is the item used to begin amplification on an eligible weapon; research points and ARC parts are used to unlock upgrade types at the Research Station; and the weapon’s nodes then show their own purchase requirements. These are connected steps, but they are not one transaction. An amplified weapon can still have locked or unpurchased upgrades if you have not completed the research and node purchases.
What you need before you start
- Raider Outpost access and progression: the Outpost must be expanded to level 4 to enable level IV station upgrades.
- Level IV Gunsmith and Research Station: both stations must reach level 4.
- A tier IV weapon: the weapon you intend to amplify must meet this prerequisite.
- An Amplification Module matching the weapon’s rarity: the module mark must correspond to the weapon’s rarity.
- Research points, ARC parts, and node materials: the costs depend on the research unlock and weapon nodes shown in the current interfaces.
Exact material totals are not established here and may change with patches. Read the requirements displayed at the Gunsmith and Research Station rather than preparing around a cost listed in an older guide.
Before making a collection plan, separate the requirements into three checks: eligibility, module, and progression currency. Eligibility means the weapon itself is tier IV and supported by the current system. The module check is a rarity match, not just a search for the highest-mark item. Progression currency means the points, ARC parts, and node materials shown by the relevant station. Knowing which category is missing makes it easier to decide whether to keep upgrading a weapon, collect a module, or work on research first.
How to unlock the required Outpost and stations
1. Unlock the Raider Outpost
The reported unlock project has three stages: photograph a farmland house near Ruined Homestead on Blue Gate, hand in construction materials, and then deal damage to flying ARC and a Bully. Complete the objectives shown in your project tracker; use its current wording and markers if they differ from this description.
These are project objectives rather than amplification-specific purchases. If the Outpost is not yet available, treat its project as the first gate: a module does not replace the need to open and develop the stations. Check the tracker between stages so you can follow the objective currently active instead of trying to complete a later task out of sequence.
2. Expand the Outpost to level 4
Once the Outpost is available, complete its expansion requirements until it reaches level 4. This progression is needed before the stations can receive their level IV upgrades.

Outpost level and station level are separate checks. Reaching level 4 on the Outpost enables the level IV station upgrades, but does not itself mean that the Gunsmith and Research Station have both been upgraded. Confirm each station’s displayed level after expanding the Outpost.
3. Upgrade both stations to level 4
Upgrade the Gunsmith and Research Station individually. A current guide reports that the Gunsmith’s final upgrade requires an Emperor Modulator among other materials, but does not establish a complete, reliable cost list. Confirm every item in the station interface before spending or setting out to collect materials.
Both stations matter because the process uses them for different jobs: the Gunsmith is where you choose the weapon and apply the matching module, while the Research Station is where you complete tasks and unlock upgrade types. Having one station at level 4 does not remove the reported requirement for the other. If you are short on materials, use each station’s live requirements to identify which upgrade is still blocking the process.
How to amplify a tier IV weapon
- Bring the intended weapon to tier IV. Amplification is reported to require a tier IV weapon; a lower-tier copy is not ready for this step. Check the weapon itself rather than assuming that owning another copy at a higher tier satisfies the requirement.
- Open the Gunsmith in the Raider Outpost. Select Weapon Upgrades, then choose Amplify. This is a Gunsmith action, not a general inventory use for the module.
- Check the weapon and module rarity. Select an Amplification Module whose mark matches the weapon’s rarity. If the rarities do not match, do not assume the module can be used. Compare their tooltips before confirming.
- Review the confirmation and requirements. Read the live interface for the materials consumed and any other conditions before confirming. Costs and balance may have changed since a guide was written. Stop if you are uncertain which item is being consumed or which weapon is selected.
- Complete research for the upgrade type you want. At the level 4 Research Station, complete the displayed research tasks and pay the required points and ARC parts to unlock an upgrade type. Choose an unlock that corresponds to the playstyle or use you have in mind, rather than assuming one research choice applies to every weapon.
- Buy available nodes on the weapon. Return to its upgrade tree and purchase nodes using the listed materials. A research unlock makes an upgrade type available; it does not automatically buy every node for every weapon. Review prerequisites and any branch lockout before purchasing.
A practical way to do this without mixing up the stages is to inspect the weapon tree first, note the kind of change you want, and then check the Research Station for the associated unlock and its requirements. After the research is complete, return to the weapon tree and follow the nodes that are actually available. If the displayed path or labels differ from an older description, follow the live interface rather than trying to force a remembered sequence.

Where Amplification Modules come from
A current guide reports two sources: the Frigate and the inside of the fallen Emperor on Pendola Pass. These locations and their drop rates are patch-sensitive; no drop rate is established here. Treat them as leads to verify in the live game, not guaranteed farming routes.
The reported module marks run from Mk. I through Mk. V and correspond to weapon rarity from common through legendary. Before risking a run or using a module, compare the module tooltip with the weapon’s rarity. The matching requirement matters more than simply finding a module with a high mark.

That makes it worth checking your intended weapon before setting out. If you already know its rarity, you can judge whether a found module is relevant instead of assuming any module will work. Conversely, do not plan a raid around a particular mark or location as though it were guaranteed: the reported locations do not establish a fixed spawn, drop rate, or reliable farming rotation.
If the Frigate or the fallen Emperor is empty, that alone does not prove the source information is wrong or that you missed a guaranteed container. Drop availability can vary, and the location details may change. Confirm current conditions in the game and be prepared to pursue another progression task instead of repeatedly making a run based on an assumed rate.
How to choose a branch without wasting materials
Amplification can alter practical weapon behavior rather than merely raising a number. A branch that makes sense for one weapon or encounter may not suit another. The game’s current tree is the authority: inspect each node’s effect, prerequisites, price, and any exclusivity before purchasing.
Compare what the branch is meant to do
- Target: decide whether you want to improve the weapon for ARC armor or weak points, other Raiders, or utility. Do not assume one branch is best for every target.
- Firing and handling: consider whether the resulting behavior suits your aim and engagement style. For instance, automatic fire or a scope changes how a weapon is used, not just its damage profile.
- Magazine and reload trade-offs: if a node changes magazine capacity or related behavior, weigh the benefit against the reload or resource trade-offs displayed in the tree.
- Prerequisites and exclusivity: check whether a node requires earlier upgrades and whether choosing it blocks a competing branch. The Burletta and Anvil trees have been cited as examples of weapons with differing paths, but the exact current options should be read in-game.
- Cost and durability risk: compare node materials with the value of carrying the amplified weapon into a raid, including its repair and durability implications.
Avoid buying a node solely because it is available. If the tree presents mutually exclusive choices, pause at that point and decide which role you want the weapon to fill; an early choice can determine which later nodes remain accessible.
For a more useful comparison, consider two candidate paths side by side rather than ranking them in isolation. First ask what you need the weapon to do: deal with ARC armor or weak points, fight other Raiders, or provide a utility benefit. Then compare how each option changes firing behavior and handling. A fully automatic conversion, for example, is a different operating style from adding a scope; a large drum magazine, such as the 64-round Rattler example described by Embark, changes capacity and can affect how you think about reloads and ammunition use. These examples illustrate the type of decision to make, not a universal recommendation.
Next compare the actual prerequisites and purchase costs shown on the two paths. A promising node may sit behind earlier nodes or an upgrade type you have not researched. If a branch is exclusive, count the blocked alternative as part of the decision: choosing one route may mean giving up another behavior for that weapon. The research cost, weapon-node materials, and durability or repair risk all belong in the comparison, not just the headline effect.
There is no supported universal “best” branch. A path that suits a player who wants a particular firing style may be a poor fit for someone who values another behavior or intends to use the weapon against a different target. Decide what you want the weapon to accomplish, read what the tree actually offers, and spend only once those two things line up.

Durability and raid risk
A current guide reports that amplified weapons gain maximum durability, and that an amplified weapon looted from another player has very little durability remaining. Treat these as current guide-reported mechanics rather than permanent guarantees: verify the displayed durability and repair rules in-game, especially after a patch.
In practical terms, an amplified weapon may represent a larger investment than an unmodified one. Before taking it into a raid, consider the materials already spent, the intended use of the weapon, and whether the possible loss is acceptable. Do not rely on a specific durability number or repair cost unless the live game displays it for your weapon.

This risk is especially relevant when comparing a weapon you built yourself with one taken from another Raider. The reported low remaining durability on looted amplified weapons means the item’s upgrades do not necessarily make it a ready-to-use prize. Inspect its condition before deciding whether to carry it, depend on it, or commit further materials. Likewise, an increase in maximum durability should not be read as immunity to wear, a promise of a particular number of raids, or proof that repair will be inexpensive.
Before a raid, ask whether the planned run is worth putting the weapon at risk. A high-investment build may make sense when its chosen behavior is important to your plan, but the cost of losing or repairing it should be part of that choice. The live durability display and repair rules are more reliable than a remembered number from a previous version.
Common problems and what to check
The Amplify option is unavailable
- Check that the weapon is tier IV.
- Confirm the Raider Outpost, Gunsmith, and Research Station have reached the required level 4 progression.
- Verify that you are in the Gunsmith’s Weapon Upgrades area and have a compatible module.
- Check that the weapon is among those currently supported in the live interface; the launch count of 15 is not a current roster guarantee.
The module will not apply
Compare its mark and rarity with the weapon’s rarity using the item tooltips. The reported system requires a rarity match; do not assume a module can be substituted because it is a higher mark. Also confirm that you selected the intended weapon and are using the Gunsmith’s amplification option rather than trying to use the module as a generic inventory item.
A node is locked or cannot be purchased
Check whether its upgrade type has been unlocked through Research Station tasks, whether prerequisite nodes are missing, and whether you have the materials listed for that specific node. Research unlocks and weapon-node purchases are separate steps. If a competing branch is involved, read the node’s exclusivity before spending on a route that could block your intended choice.
You cannot find a module or a reported location is empty
Module locations and drop rates can change. The Frigate and fallen Emperor on Pendola Pass are reported sources, not guaranteed spawns or fixed-rate farms. Consult current in-game information and avoid committing to a run based on an unverified drop expectation.
You have an amplified weapon but not the behavior you expected
