Give an AI agent only the access its current task requires, and disable the rest. Start by checking every route it can use—not just a single permissions screen—because connected apps, files, terminal commands, internet access and visual control of your screen are separate capabilities. Then narrow each enabled route and review consequential actions before they happen.
What can an AI agent access?
“Agent access” can mean several different things. An agent might read information from connected accounts, work with local files, run commands, visit websites or interact with apps by viewing and controlling your screen. The controls for one route may not restrict another.

| Access surface | What it can expose or enable | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Connected apps and accounts | Information or actions available through services you connect, such as workplace apps. | Which apps and features are enabled, and whether access can be limited by app, role or task. |
| Files and folders | Reading, creating or changing files in the locations available to the agent. | Whether the agent can reach only a project or selected folder, or broader directories and sensitive files. |
| Terminal or shell | Commands and their effects, including changes made by child processes. | Whether execution is sandboxed, which files and network destinations it can reach, and when approval is required. |
| Browser and network | Access to websites or other network destinations, depending on the product and its configuration. | Whether destinations can be restricted, and whether browser access is separate from connected-app access. |
| Visual computer control | Viewing accessible on-screen content and clicking, typing or navigating desktop apps. | Which apps and operating-system permissions are involved, and whether the agent asks before taking actions. |
Look for overlapping routes to the same data. OpenAI notes that disabling synced-app access in ChatGPT does not necessarily block access to that data through separately enabled features such as chat or deep research. Check the active integrations and features, not just one connection setting. OpenAI’s ChatGPT agent documentation describes the available app and agent controls.

- Describe the task narrowly. Decide what information and action the agent actually needs. “Summarize these project files” does not inherently require access to your whole home directory, email or financial accounts.
- Inspect the available tools and connections. Check enabled apps, files or folders, browser capabilities, terminal or shell, MCP servers, and screen-control features. Turn off routes that are not needed for this task.
- Choose the smallest useful scope. Prefer a specific folder, project, app, domain or operation over broad access. For workplace agents, Microsoft recommends using a dedicated agent identity with scoped roles and clear tool boundaries. Microsoft’s least-privilege guidance explains those organizational controls.
- Separate approval from containment. Set approval prompts for actions you want to review, but check whether a sandbox separately limits files or network access. A prompt and an enforced boundary do different jobs.
- Review before high-impact actions. Inspect the target account or app and what the agent is about to do before allowing it to send, share, delete, purchase or change settings.
What controls are available in specific products?
ChatGPT agent and workspace controls
ChatGPT workspace administrators can enable or disable agent mode, assign availability by role, manage which apps are available and request website blocking. The exact controls depend on the workspace plan, administrator configuration and rollout. OpenAI distinguishes requirements, which members cannot override, from defaults, which establish starting values within those requirements. Its Agent Security documentation also distinguishes cloud and local execution settings; do not assume a policy for one environment governs the other. For local work, mobile device management and legacy managed-device requirements take priority over Agent Security. See OpenAI’s Agent Security and local work sync documentation.

Gemini in Android Studio
This applies to Gemini in the Android Studio developer environment, not to AI apps generally or a setting for Android phones. Android Studio’s permission categories include project files, external directories and sensitive data, Google Search and other domains, shell commands and MCP servers. Its Agent Shell Sandbox limits unauthorized network access and filesystem writes unless consent is supplied; sensitive files such as SSH keys and password files require separate authorization. Check the settings labels in your installed Android Studio version, since labels can change. Android Developers documents the agent permission controls.
Visual Studio Code
VS Code documents an operating-system-level terminal sandbox that can restrict filesystem paths and network access, including to configured domains where supported. Approval settings are separate: choosing a more permissive approval level does not remove restrictions imposed by an enabled sandbox. The documentation labels the local terminal sandbox Preview on macOS, Linux and WSL2, and Experimental on Windows. Treat availability and behavior as platform- and version-dependent. Read VS Code’s trust and safety documentation.

GitHub Copilot computer use
Computer use is an optional capability for visually interacting with desktop apps. When enabled, it can inspect accessible app content and visual context, then click, type and navigate. GitHub documents Accessibility and Screen Recording permissions on macOS. It warns that changing interfaces, unclear instructions or unexpected on-screen content can lead to unintended actions. Avoid persistent “Always allow” access for sensitive apps or ones that can perform high-impact actions; review the target app and results, especially when changes affect data or other people. GitHub explains Copilot computer use and its risks.
Windows agent workspace
Microsoft describes an experimental Copilot Actions approach for Windows that is disabled by default in the preview described in its documentation. It uses a separate standard account and a contained agent workspace to limit visibility and access. This is a product-specific experimental approach, not a control to assume is available to every Windows user. Check Microsoft’s Windows agentic security documentation for current availability.

What should you check on a phone?
On iPhone and iPad, Apple’s platform security guide describes app protections that include sandboxing and declared entitlements. These are platform-level protections, not a complete permission checklist for a particular agent. Review the permissions and integrations exposed by the specific app and service you use; platform sandboxing does not make that review unnecessary. Apple Platform Security explains the platform protections.
On Android, do not treat Android Studio’s Gemini settings as phone-wide agent controls: they apply to the developer environment. For a mobile agent app, inspect the permissions and connected services it actually requests or offers. The controls and available integrations vary by app and service.

How do approval prompts and sandboxes differ?
An approval prompt is a point for human review: it can ask before an agent takes an action. A sandbox is an enforcement boundary for supported execution paths, such as restricting which files or network destinations a terminal process can access. A permissive approval choice does not necessarily remove sandbox limits, and a prompt alone does not establish that a process is contained. VS Code explicitly documents this separation for its terminal sandbox. Its trust and safety documentation describes the relationship between approval and sandboxing.
When choosing a configuration, ask what is enforced by the operating system or product, what relies on the agent asking you, and which execution paths the control actually covers. Sandboxing and permission features vary by product, operating system, version, administrator policy and rollout.

How should organizations limit agent access?
Workplace deployments should use a dedicated identity for the agent rather than inheriting a person’s broad access. Scope its roles and tools to the task, establish who owns it, and use logging and revocation so access can be reviewed and withdrawn. Downstream permissions still matter: a narrow agent configuration is not a substitute for limiting what its identity can access in connected systems. Microsoft Entra’s least-privilege guidance covers dedicated identities and scoped roles.
What should you do when the task is finished?
- Disable temporary integrations or permissions that are no longer needed.
- Periodically review connected apps and available agent features.
- If the agent interacted with a sensitive logged-in site, follow that product’s guidance for ending or clearing the session.
OpenAI recommends enabling only the apps needed and regularly reviewing permissions in its ChatGPT agent documentation.
