The daily alert is a reminder—not a guaranteed lockout. For a stronger app-use limit on an iPhone, use Apple Screen Time; parents can also manage limits for a supervised teen account.
Set an Instagram daily time reminder
Instagram’s menu labels can vary by app version. Meta’s older instructions use Your Activity; a third-party guide published in June 2026 reports a newer route. Look for Your Activity, Time spent, or Time management if the labels below do not match your app.

- Open your profile in the Instagram app and tap the menu button.
- Open Settings and activity, then look for Time management and Daily limit. The June 2026 guide reports this path, but it is not an official, universal route: Guiding Tech’s Instagram time-limit guide.
- If those options are not present, open Instagram’s settings and tap Your Activity or Time spent. Meta’s earlier instructions place the time dashboard and reminder in this area: Meta’s 2018 instructions.
- Choose the daily amount of time at which you want Instagram to remind you. Save the setting; use the same screen to change or cancel it later.
Meta describes this personal setting as a daily time alert or reminder. It can prompt you when you reach the time you chose, but Meta does not say that it locks an adult out of Instagram or prevents continued use. If you need a device-level restriction, use the separate iPhone option below.
Check how much time you spend on Instagram
In Instagram’s time or activity area, the dashboard shows time spent in the app over the past week. Meta’s earlier description says it displays average daily time on that device; tap a day to see that day’s total. Use the dashboard to choose a reminder amount that reflects your own usage rather than treating the alert as a usage report or enforcement tool.

Use Instagram’s break reminders and notification controls
Schedule a break reminder
Instagram also offers a separate reminder to take a break during an app visit. Meta’s Safety Center lists intervals of 10, 20, or 30 minutes. This is distinct from a daily time alert: one prompts a pause during a visit, while the other is tied to a chosen daily amount of Instagram use. See Instagram’s Safety Center well-being guidance.
Mute push notifications
If alerts are drawing you back into the app, use Instagram’s Notification Settings to mute push notifications. This can reduce interruptions, but it does not limit the time you can spend in Instagram.

Set a stronger Instagram limit on iPhone
Apple Screen Time offers app time allowances and schedules at the device level. To configure it, open Settings > Screen Time on your iPhone and use the app limit or downtime controls. Apple’s instructions are in Use Screen Time on your iPhone or iPad. A device allowance or schedule is a different kind of control from Instagram’s personal reminder.
Apple says that with Share Across Devices enabled, Screen Time settings and reports can be shared across an iPhone, iPad, and Mac signed in to the same Apple Account. Consider that scope when setting a limit: a setting shared across devices may affect use beyond the iPhone where you first configured it.

Parent-managed limits for a teen account
Instagram’s supervision tools are separate from an individual’s daily reminder. Meta says a parent or caregiver can initiate supervision and set specific times during the day or week to limit a supervised teen’s use. Availability and setup depend on Instagram’s supervision features and the accounts involved. See Meta’s parental supervision overview.
Meta also announced in 2026 an agreement for a default two-hour daily limit shared across Facebook and Instagram for users under 18 in participating U.S. states and territories, with parental permission required to turn it off. The announcement described the agreement as pending judicial approval; it is not a global rule or an adult limit. Its legal and rollout status may change, so consult Meta’s announcement for the current status.
