How to Let an AI Agent Use Secrets Safely

A safer agent access design keeps long-lived secrets out of model context and uses distinct identities, scoped runtime credentials, tightly limited tools, and independent controls for sensitive actions.

The safer way to let an AI agent use a secret is to keep the credential out of its prompt and reasoning context. Give the agent a distinct identity, then have a trusted runtime or gateway obtain narrowly scoped, short-lived access for approved tool calls. Limit what the agent can do, isolate its execution, and require an independent approval for sensitive actions.

Why a secret manager is not enough

A secrets service can protect stored credentials, but it does not decide whether an agent should be allowed to use them, what it may do with them, or whether a downstream system will honor the intended limits. AWS distinguishes user authentication, agent authentication, and tool authentication; each boundary needs its own controls. AWS guidance on secure agent access

Authorization must be enforced by deterministic controls outside model output and at the systems that hold the data. A model can be manipulated into making an unsafe request; the tool, gateway, and downstream service must still reject actions beyond the agent’s permissions.

Build the access path around a dedicated identity

Give each agent an accountable identity

Create a distinct identity for the agent, with an owner and permissions separate from human developer credentials. Do not reuse a developer’s personal login or give an agent a broad production credential. Keep read-only access separate from write-capable access where possible. Microsoft’s Entra guidance recommends unique identities, task-scoped authorization, and reviewing the effective permissions an agent receives across its dependencies. Allow only named tools and actions

Start from deny-by-default. Allow the specific tools, resources, and operations required for the task, and validate authorization at every hop: from the orchestrator to the tool, and from the tool to the downstream service. A tool being available to the agent should not imply permission to perform every operation that tool supports.

OWASP summarizes the principle as giving an agent only the autonomy, tools, and access its task requires, for only as long as it needs them. Its guidance also cautions that permission keys and configuration details vary by product; illustrative policy syntax should not be assumed to work universally. Issue credentials at runtime

Have a trusted runtime, identity sidecar, secrets service, or gateway obtain credentials when an approved tool call needs them. Prefer short-lived credentials scoped to the task, resource, and allowed action. Avoid placing long-lived secrets in prompts, source code, configuration files, or broad environment variables that an agent process can inspect.

There are different ways to enforce this boundary. AWS describes centralized gateway access to tools, runtime retrieval of client secrets from Secrets Manager, scoped OAuth permissions, and approval controls for sensitive actions. Microsoft’s Azure SRE Agent documentation describes a different implementation: a sandboxed tool process receives short-lived credentials from an isolated identity sidecar, with credentials kept out of the agent’s reasoning context. The documentation also describes process and network-proxy boundaries. This is a description of that service’s design, not a guarantee about other agents. Azure SRE Agent security overview

Limit the damage if the agent is manipulated

Treat retrieved content as untrusted

Web pages, files, issue descriptions, logs, and tool metadata can contain malicious instructions. An agent may follow them even when its original task was benign. Treat those inputs as data, not as authority to expand access. Tool descriptions and external content should never override the access policy set by trusted controls. OWASP covers these risks in its AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet.

Isolate execution and restrict outbound connections

Run agent tools in an isolated environment and limit outbound network access to destinations the task requires. A confirmation prompt is not a security boundary if manipulated instructions can steer the agent toward a dangerous action. Sandboxing and egress restrictions help contain mistakes or misuse, even when they cannot guarantee that a secret will never be exposed.

Put sensitive actions behind a separate gate

Separate read-only tools and identities from write-capable ones. For destructive, financial, privileged, or otherwise sensitive actions, use an independent approval or policy decision rather than trusting the agent to judge its own request. The downstream system should enforce the restriction too; a model-generated explanation or claim of approval is not authorization.

Make the design operational

  1. Map the task. Document the agent’s purpose, data, tools, dependencies, and operating environment. List each secret it needs and the exact operation it enables.
  2. Create the identity. Assign the agent a dedicated, accountable identity and keep its access separate from human credentials. Split read-only and write-capable access where practical.
  3. Write the allowlist. Permit only the named tools, resources, and actions required. Check that authorization is enforced by the orchestrator, each tool, and the downstream service.
  4. Deliver access just in time. Retrieve or issue scoped credentials through a trusted runtime boundary for approved calls. Keep long-lived credentials out of model context and any broadly visible process environment.
  5. Constrain the runtime. Isolate tool execution and restrict outbound network destinations to the minimum needed.
  6. Add approval and audit controls. Require independent approval where actions are sensitive. Record the agent identity, initiating user, session, tool and action, and resulting change in an audit path outside the agent’s control. Never put secret values in those logs.
  7. Test misuse cases. Test prompt-injection and unauthorized-action scenarios when prompts, tools, policies, memory, or integrations change. Verify that revocation takes effect at downstream systems and review the agent’s effective permissions periodically. OWASP recommends adversarial testing and regression coverage for agent policies; Microsoft’s guidance highlights revocation and downstream enforcement as design concerns.

Choose an implementation by its security boundaries

No single architecture is established as best for every agent deployment. Compare options by where credentials can appear, how authorization is enforced, and how access can be audited and revoked—not just by whether a secrets manager is present.

Design question What to verify
Credential exposure Can a credential enter model context or an ordinary tool-process environment? Prefer a trusted runtime or sidecar that supplies it only to the tool that needs it.
Scope and lifetime Is access limited to the task, resource, and action, and does it expire when no longer needed? The cited guidance recommends scoped, short-lived access but does not establish a universal lifetime.
Authorization enforcement Does each tool and downstream service validate the agent’s identity and permitted action, or is the design relying on the model to comply?
Isolation and egress Are tool processes isolated, and are outbound destinations constrained to those required for the task?
Audit and revocation Can operators trace who initiated a session, what tools acted, and what changed without recording secret values? Can access be revoked and verified at downstream systems?
Approval Do sensitive actions require an independent decision, rather than a confirmation generated by the agent itself?

What this approach can and cannot guarantee

These controls reduce exposure and limit the consequences of a compromised or misdirected agent; they do not prove that credential theft is impossible. A secrets manager alone cannot compensate for overly broad identity permissions, unsafe tools, weak downstream authorization, or an unisolated runtime. The security outcome depends on how the complete access path is configured and enforced.
