To block someone in Gmail, open an email from them, select More, then choose Block [sender]. Their future emails will go to Spam, not be automatically deleted. The steps are similar in Gmail on a computer and in the mobile app.
Block an email address in Gmail
On a computer
- Open Gmail and open a message from the sender.
- At the top right of the message, next to Reply, click More.
- Select Block [sender].
In the Gmail app
- Open the Gmail app and open a message from the sender.
- At the top right, tap More.
- Tap Block [sender].
Google documents these app steps for Android and iPhone or iPad. Menu wording can vary slightly by device or interface version.

What happens after you block a sender?
Gmail sends future emails from that sender to Spam. Blocking changes how Gmail handles incoming messages; it does not, by itself, unsubscribe you from a mailing list.

Unblock someone in Gmail
From one of their messages
Open a message from the sender, select More, then choose Unblock [sender].

From Gmail settings on a computer
- Open Gmail and click Settings.
- Choose See all settings, then open Filters and Blocked Addresses.
- Select the sender and click Unblock selected addresses.
After you unblock a sender, their future emails go to your inbox. If a message still lands in Spam, use Gmail’s spam controls to mark it as valid. Unblocking does not guarantee that earlier messages in Spam will be restored to your inbox.
Should you block, unsubscribe, or report the message?
