Let the browser decide when to request it. Use IntersectionObserver instead when you need a chosen preload distance, a nested scroll container, or custom control over when an image URL is assigned.
Use native lazy loading for the usual case
When a new feed item is appended, create its image, set loading to lazy, provide its dimensions, and append it. The browser determines how far outside the visible area it starts loading; there is no single pixel threshold that authors can rely on across browsers.

function appendFeedImage(feed, url, width, height, alt = "") {
const img = document.createElement("img");
img.src = url;
img.alt = alt;
img.loading = "lazy";
img.width = width;
img.height = height;
feed.append(img);
}
appendFeedImage(feed, "/images/story-42.webp", 800, 450, "A view of the coastline");
This approach is the lower-complexity default when the image URL is already available. Native lazy loading is intended for non-critical, off-screen images—not images needed immediately in the initial viewport. MDN’s lazy-loading guide describes the browser-managed approach and its intended use.
Reserve space before the image loads
Set the image’s intrinsic width and height, or reserve the same aspect ratio with CSS. This gives the browser layout space for an image that has not loaded yet and helps prevent content from jumping when it appears. An unloaded image without dimensions may have no useful layout area, which can interfere with visibility-based loading.

.feed-image {
display: block;
width: 100%;
height: auto;
}
The HTML dimensions provide the intrinsic ratio; responsive CSS can scale the rendered image to fit its column.
Use IntersectionObserver when you need timing control
Choose an observer when you need to begin loading a chosen distance before an image is visible, track images inside a particular scrolling element, or coordinate loading with custom feed behavior. A shared observer can watch multiple targets with the same settings. Set root to the scrolling element for a nested feed; use null for the document viewport. A positive rootMargin expands the observer area so an image can trigger before it enters the visible region. MDN’s Intersection Observer API reference explains how it asynchronously watches target intersections.

const feedScroller = document.querySelector(".feed-scroller");
const feed = document.querySelector(".feed");
const imageObserver = new IntersectionObserver((entries, observer) => {
for (const entry of entries) {
if (!entry.isIntersecting) continue;
const img = entry.target;
img.src = img.dataset.src;
observer.unobserve(img);
}
}, {
root: feedScroller, // Use null if the document itself scrolls.
rootMargin: "300px 0px", // Start before the image reaches the visible area.
});
function appendObservedImage(url, width, height, alt = "") {
const img = document.createElement("img");
img.dataset.src = url;
img.alt = alt;
img.width = width;
img.height = height;
feed.append(img);
imageObserver.observe(img);
}
appendObservedImage("/images/story-42.webp", 800, 450, "A view of the coastline");
The example uses a 300-pixel vertical lead distance as a configurable value, not a universal recommendation or a measured performance result. Adjust it to suit the feed’s layout and loading behavior. Once an image’s source has been assigned, unobserving it avoids repeated work for a one-time trigger.

Do not defer the same source twice without a reason
With native lazy loading, provide src and let the browser defer its request. With the observer pattern, keep the URL in data-src until the target intersects, then assign src. Combining native lazy loading with deferred source assignment adds complexity and is generally unnecessary unless the application has a specific reason for both.

Handle image state and browser behavior correctly
The window load event is not an all-images-ready signal
Lazy images can still be pending when the window’s load event fires. If code needs the state of a particular image, inspect that image’s complete property rather than treating the page-level event as proof that every feed image has finished loading. See MDN’s HTMLImageElement.complete reference.
Account for JavaScript and compatibility needs
MDN notes that browser deferral of lazy-loaded images is conditioned on JavaScript being enabled as an anti-tracking measure. If your supported browsers require a fallback, MDN lists an IntersectionObserver polyfill or scroll, resize, and orientation handlers as alternatives. Avoid expensive repeated intersection checks in event handlers. There is no complete browser-by-browser compatibility matrix established here, so check the support requirements for the browsers your application actually targets. Lazy loading is not image optimization
Lazy loading avoids requesting images a visitor may never reach. It does not reduce the size of images that are requested. For an image-heavy feed, also serve suitable image dimensions and formats and compress the files. These are separate image-performance measures, as described in MDN’s multimedia performance guidance.
Troubleshoot common feed problems
- An image never loads: Give it intrinsic dimensions or reserve its aspect ratio. For an observer, confirm that the target is observed, that the intended scroll container is set as
root, and that the source URL is present indata-src. - Images appear late while scrolling: With native loading, the browser controls the request distance. If you need a specific lead distance, use an observer and increase its positive
rootMargincarefully. - An image triggers against the wrong scroll area: Set the observer’s
rootto the element that actually scrolls. Usenullonly when the document viewport is the relevant root. - The page jumps as images appear: Provide correct dimensions or reserve the image’s aspect ratio in layout before the request completes.
- Code says the page loaded, but feed images are missing: The window
loadevent does not guarantee that lazy images have completed. Check the particular image’scompletestate when needed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I lazy-load images that are added after the page first renders?
Yes. Set loading="lazy" on each newly created image before appending it, or observe the new image with IntersectionObserver when you need custom control.
Should images visible when the page opens be lazy-loaded?
No. Keep images critical to the initial viewport out of lazy loading so they can load without that deferral.
